Been looking for a deal for a while. Seems to be the best price I can find currently although it is worth mentioning that you can get it slightly cheaper from eb games on ebay with 15% off. Stock appears to be limited for that deal.
I will acknowledge this isn't for everyone, but I think for me at least it will be a welcome addition to my PS5.

Thats why I phrased it as 'could prove to be' not 'is'. Time will tell, but given how it's a fairly off the shelf internal sysem its only a matter of time before its publically available.

Built in PS5 controller is a unique selling point for this device. Some really love the ergonomics of it.
But sure, there are plenty alternatives on the market - this is not the definitive 'best', just another option that I'm sure someone will appreciate.
As much as I love the PS5 controller and how the Portal will enhance my current setup (PS remote play on mobile phone), my main concern would be the longevity of the joysticks. I barely use my controller and within a year it had already developed issues with the joystick.
It will be awesome if this can compete with Odin 2 or RP4 in the future

You can get perfect emulation of much better systems than the PS1 they claim is working in much cheaper and more ergonomic handhelds.
Except the storage is very limited and can't be increased (because it's meant to be a streaming device).
Would have thought sony would put the absolute bare minimum specs on that thing given it's primary use is for streaming. While they were able to get a PSP game working, I have doubts anything can be played at a reasonable fps.
Or not. Reportedly only has about 6gb of on board storage. That's not going to get much on it once you work your way into the CD based era. No Bluetooth. Yes it's got nice controls, but that's about it.
I'm waiting until homebrew has progressed a lot more before considering getting one of these, i barely touch my ps5 as is
I heard there was an exploit to the ps5 but that was patched not long after by sony.
Im sure the smart cookies will find another way in.
If you want one for future homebrew use it would make sense to buy as early as possible to be on the lowest firmware possible.

Looks like EB have pulled the listing again, that happened before the 15% off sale as well. When I saw it get listed again I had already purchased one from jb. Didnt feel like messing around with refunds for the sake of $10.

my WiFi is actually decent but I keep reading that it's best if your ps5 is connected via ethernet cable (mine isn't)
Ehh.. I’ve got my ps5 via Ethernet and unless I’m in the same room, remote play on iPad 10 (has Wi-Fi 6 chip) is average at best. And according to many prominent YouTube reviewers (Digital Foundry, LTT), Portal is the same performance as any device with the Remote Play App or even the better Mirror Play/PS Play App.
Mine works fine with both the portal and the PS5 on 5Ghz. I have a newish Asus RT-AX86U Pro and not too many other devices on 5Ghz (I have a bunch of IoT on 2.4Ghz).
The video streaming is perfect but there is noticeable audio lag, but as far as I have been able to find out this is a limitation of the portal at the moment, not related to wifi quality.
Having typed all this out… still make sure you can return it.
@367: As ridiculous as it may be, if it was possible to connect it to your ps5 via a 20 meter cable to cut out any latency, choppiness and lag… sold. Wife would probably be less impressed by the concept of a cable running from lounge room to toilet.

@tonyjzx: Apparently microwave ovens get in the way of a good signal. For the record never had this issue even when my android tablet was on top of the microwave oven. 4k video streaming on tablet while microwave cooked some popcorn.
@EitherWayUp: lol, I legit have 30 feet cable from the router to bedroom to a switcher and i connected pc pc,ps5, tv,xbox series x(before selling it). for latency purpose i wanted everything wired. I work nights so i have tripped over the cable dozens times while leaving in dark, but its worth it.
@V003: I stuck my cables along the topside of the wall using those plastic cable runners plus a couple of tubes of liquid nails. And voila. No tripping over network cables.

You could test this out by running a game with the official Playstation Remote Play app on your mobile device via Wifi; I don't think there should be any differences in streaming speeds if they will be on the same network.
I have 100/20 internet, ps5 wired to ethernet and NetGear AX6600 (gaming router).
But gaming is not that smooth when I tried playing in my Pixel 7a with ps5 controller.
Not sure how to improve that.

My PS5 is wired, Ubiquiti Alien router and it works great! I only ever use it at home, but works great from all rooms. Even the boyfriend likes using it

I remember reading on reddit someone who bought it from eb games and had same issue … end result was no refund. I’d say JB will be the same.

Other than a slightly larger screen, is this significantly better than PS5 Remote Play/Mirror Play/PS Play App on a 7" 4K HDR OLED screen phone on a mount on the PS5 dualsense controller? A ~$10 solution if you already have the phone as a spare?
probably not that much, I have a Pixel Pro and frankly playing anything on that was no really workable. I will say it feels very premium and seems to work very well on my wifi connection.
Nah but the phone mounts can feel top heavy and therefore less ergonomic. Better off slapping on a backbone and then you have your portal at home.

If you want portable, backbones good. GameSir grips are very close to an Xbox controller so a good alternative if you wanted something closer to a PS Portal.
Hard to beat the ergonomics of the portal, plus having access to the full suite of dual sense capability is awesome. I have only played with it for a few minutes so far but the screen is miles above using my phone. There was no way I had any interest playing something on my phone over remote play. Just to small to really see what was going on.
screen size phone vs something like this is huge difference due to the aspect ratios too, a 6.1" pixel 6a really is like a 5.2" display when its 16:9 which is atrocious for a game with anything in the distance. performance wise though a phone is amazing with wifi6 if the ps5 is plugged in with ethernet, especially when most have HDR screens
i have had an odin pro and now a steam deck after mucking around with phones and tablets. if this portal was $250 i'd get one but otherwise im very happy with the steamdeck

From what I read, you have to have the PS5 powered on for this device to work.
Of course, it's streaming the PS5 to this device.
I just got one, returned. I have a very good wifi mesh, both ps5 and this conected to same set, but still had issues with competitive gaming
Games via streaming will never be competitive against those not playing via streaming.

Does it work anywhere, I just remember there being so much lag on the psp share play equivalent it wasn’t really a good experience, is it now a non issue?
