    YES!!!!

  • Was $529

    why so expensive ? I got Z690 Tamahawk DDR5 for $289 back then :O

    • An extra M.2 slot, some supposedly improved cooling design for the VRM/MOSFETs, and some other minor inconsequential things.

$300 on a ddr4 mobo is not a good move right now.

Some games just run better on DDR4 and this is probs the last gen that supports DDR4 so still good. For this price you can only get a budget DDR5 mobo which might find a hard time to support high speed RAM

      • Some games just run better on DDR4

        What games?

Not sure where the negs come from without doing research. Hardware unboxed showed that in triple A titles DDR5 does have advantages but DDR4 is still stronger in some competitive shooting games. Most videos only compare them in DDR5 rewarding games to make DDR5 appealing.

The only videos I found that have performed detail comparisons across different speeds and games are from the Chinese platform:
        1. If you don’t care about OC, comparison among 6400, 6000, 5600, 5200, 4800, 4000, 3800, 3600 is here.
        2. If you know how to OC (DDR5 OC is just much more expensive atm), comparison among 8400, 8000, 7600, 7200, 4400, 4300 is here.

Good DDR4 kits are quite hard to get nowadays but we’re quite common before. I believe if you have a good pair before this is a better upgrade choice.

      • Z690 + 4 dimm slot board + ddr5 overclocking is a recipe for disaster.

The z690 unifyx and itx unify are the only GOOD ddr5 z690 msi boards, and they have pretty limited support for the new 24 and 48gb ram sticks, I think the bios support has been basically abandoned (they are probably still pushing out updates with microcode updates but not actually improving the boards).

If you want to run anything north of 7000 I would recommend sticking to z790 refresh boards from gigabyte or asrock (the boards that came out with 14th gen), if you’re balling out and going for 8000 there is really only the Apex (and encore)

      • I've encountered unprecedented difficulty achieving XMP speeds with DDR5 2-rank DIMMs on an MSI Tomahawk Z790 motherboard. Despite obtaining developmental BIOS versions from MSI (none of which were effective) and facing their attribution of the issue to the CPU, a BIOS update was eventually released that marginally permitted XMP speeds.

So yeah, HUGE PitA XMP w/ DDR5.

    • its ddr5, what do you mean

How did we get to this point? Back in my day you could get a mobo for $100!!

      PCIe gen 5 x16, Wifi 6E, 5 x PCIe gen 4 x4 NVMe m.2 SSD slots, quality VRMs. $299 doesn't feel like a bargain even with those features though….

      • Back in my day I remember paying $350 for an ABIT BX6 Slot 1 mobo, and don't get me started on the cost of CPUs, RAM and HDDs back then. PC components are comparatively cheap these days. Well, apart from GPUs.

Most of the increase comes from the VRM since CPUs tend to be way more power hungry than before. Secondly covid boom pushed everything up. Lastly the AUD being weak has also pushed everything up.

It is also worth noting that all the vendors are loaded with stock (to the neck) and is slow moving due to the 'stagnation' in the economy. It would be pragmatic to think that the shops are not being generous by giving a discount but for cost recovery. If one is not looking to build a computer or need something quick, it will be wise to just keep the cash.

Lastly I am not too familiar with the Intel lifecycle but isn't the Z790 at the end of lifecycle, meaning there is no way to upgrade to the next gen processor?

    • And the most expensive smartphone was still less than 1k

    • back in my day, a personal computer cost $6,000 for 8MHz of green monochrome gaming

you can still get $100 mobos, just you shouldn't

A warning that there are quirks involving the Intel 2.5Gbps Ethernet chipset in these boards*. I225-V etc.

I have had one friend get microstutters in game with a fresh install - despite the port being unplugged - until the adapter was disabled in Device Manager. All driver checks done etc.
There are fixes out there involving adjusting offload buffers etc, but they might be infuriating for normal users.
Some say it is related to whatever gear you have on the other end having strange negotiation issues - however the example above is without anything plugged in!

All anecdotal but thought I'd raise it here.

EDIT: * These boards as in, the Zxxx Chipsets. My experience above was with an MSI Z790 Tomahawk Wifi purchased a month ago, with a completely fresh build. Troubleshooting even went to using older RAM and GPU. Super frustrating situation.
