  • Why they want to get rid of the phone ?

    • +20

Aren't they in the business of selling stuff?

  • +1

This or G54 when it pops up again for $198?

    • This. Look at them side by side.

    • +2

      G84 does not support eSIM

      • +1

And this is what makes the G54 an ideal "won't cry if it gets stolen" travel phone.

    • +1

      Some may pay extra $? for better-features: POLED-screen & 'ultra-wide angle camera lens' ?

What features are 'must-have' to you…'each to their own' ?

      Below may be a starting-point: read-widely…read through 'paid-reviews' ?
      https://nanoreview.net/en/phone-compare/motorola-moto-g84-vs…

Imo, if you only have $200 & just want a basic-phone, there are few-phone that can match G54's features & hence a worthy consideration.

Note 'software-update' & 'battery-drain' comments below. Good luck.

  • Golly I would love to know also . Need backup but kept away from the 54 gold rush. Very cheap but yes why are they throwing these phones?

    • +2

      Motorola Market share
"Motorola wants it to be the world’s third-largest mobile brand by 2027"

Lots of cheap models to sell before the next one is released

Android support for these Moto devices is shorter than ever, so older models need to be cleared quicker.

      • +2

        they are lenovo

it wouldnt surprise me if a g55 and g85 around the corner and they want this older stock gone

        • +1

Yes, Chinese lenovo bought Motorola in 2014.
But the mobiles are marketed as Motorola.

          New models are released quickly.
Have had a few Motorola over the years. Used to be more expensive & new models released less frequently.

          • @INFIDEL: What makes these lenovo, and not Motorola Mobility?

All their other phones are still handled by MM.

I thought the ThinkPhone series was lenovos attempt at getting away from the USA oversight of MM, no?

            • @MasterScythe: There is no oversight, Motorola is owned by Lenovo.

              • @Wardaddy: Yes, but ownership doesnt dictate what laws a company follows; Motorola Mobility LLC is a wholely American based subsiduary, headquartered in Chicago.

Its even publically traded under MMI, not MSI.

In 2015 Lenovo and Motorola Solutions (who we used to know as Motorola, and who own the logo) signed their existing designs to Motorola Mobility LLC (and allowed them to use the 'Motorola' logo, for familiarity).

I thought the commenter knew something about this model that I didnt, but it was simply a wrong assumption on their part - I just looked the patent up; This isnt a Lenovo developed phone, this is still a design registered to USA's Motorola Mobility LLC.

Lenovo may reap the profits in the end, sure, but Im sure most of us don't call Bunnings, Wesfarmers; nor Myer, Newbridge Capital.

Subsiduaries have to abide by the laws of the country theyre registered in, not by who owns them. So for now, thats still USA oversight.

    • Software-update (Android-OS &/or security) is a feature that is often overlooked. May be some-users can sacrifice this feature for a lower-price &/or forgo wallet-feature?

Battery-drain: some users complained. Look @ 'Battery usage' to find the culprit. May be turn-off 'Mobile data' when you are @ home, especially if you have a PC.

The above (& more?) are often not mentioned in the many positive reviews…what are the features that's important to you & hence not get caught-out ?

    • the g54 is entry mid level phone just ips screen, tough market they had nokia g60 on special a while back optus are doing samsung 15 which is light on ram but great screen for $1.50 pm over 2 years on plans .the sub $400. market is tough

  • +1

Price now appears to be $329.

    • +2

Price in title is after 10% everyday extra discount.

      • +7

        I need more sleep :)

  • Is this better than OnePlus 5T I'm currently using

  • +2

I've had this phone replace my Poco F2 Pro and have been quite happy with it. I only really browse social media and ozbargain so it works fine for that. I find Google Maps can be glitchy zooming in/out, haven't figured that out.
Photos with Gcam looks great despite very terrible looking camera app preview.
The standard audio equaliser kinda sucks but with Poweramp software it fixes that up.
    Battery life is awesome.
Features like Extra Dim, Ready For and the karate chop flashlight are nice to haves.
I wish it had WiFi 6 and eSIM, but beside that the only things the Poco F2 Pro had better was the macro camera and IR blaster.

Phone can last a light user 2 years easily, which for $150 a year is pretty great.

    • +1

Interesting I want to replace my Poco x3 pro. I really only want phones with longer running time due to battery size now a days. Similar to my style of usage. Thanks for your comment, might hold off as I would like esim.

      • …want phones with longer running time due to battery size now a days. Similar to my style of usage

        Not-sure if a 6000mAh battery will fix your problem…your Poco-X3-Pro battery is 5160mAh.
Have you exhausted all-options to reduce battery-drain: an UNDER-stated problem, especially with your 'style of usage' ?

  • +1

From memory the G54 would be the better value buy… SOC performance is similar, you get an eSIM slot, both SOCs are gimped for video playback from memory its capped to 1080 on 695 and 2k on the 7020, the 7020 has HDR capability.

Is the OLED screen worth the extra $100?

    • eSim pretty much useless with most carriers at the moment

      • +4

It's good for travel sims and also Boost you can transfer to eSIM. It's getting more popular

      • That was my thoughts as well 12 months ago, until Boost released esim.

      • +1

Works great when travelling… it’s a must have these days as it just adds so much flexibility.

Yes as more and more carriers introduce the eSIM it makes it worthwhile.

Yes Boost introduced it and now I only need to carry one phone instead of two.

      • Is it not up and running yet?

      • For those who may not know this, eSIM is available on Woolies mobile prepaid (I am using Woolies mobile on eSIM now).

    • both SOCs are gimped for video playback from memory its capped to 1080 on 695

I can playback 4k files fine on mine in VLC.

      • It’s most probably decoding via software and then outputting to a FHD+ screen.

You can check and see if HW decoding is enable or not. Both SOC cannot hardware decode beyond that limit in hardware.

    • +1

Is the OLED screen worth the extra $100?

You forgot to mention that this is 12Gb ram with 256Gb storage compared to 8gb ram & 128GB storage for G54. So in my humble opinion, $100 upgrade is worth it.

      • +3

If you fail to make use of the 12GB RAM before a different part of the phone reaches the end of its lifespan (i.e. you stop using the phone for a reason that isn't lack of RAM compared to the 8GB RAM Moto G54), then the $100 upgrade is not worth it.

Same goes for the OLED screen. If someone doesn't appreciate the deeper blacks, then it isn't worth it to them.

OLED screens also have a shorter useful lifespan compared to LCDs. Most LCD screens will last long after the rest of the device is obsolete.

So someone may opt for the G54 if:

        • They don't anticipate their compute needs to grow beyond requiring 8GB of RAM while still being happy with the modest CPU performance (2 x big A78 cores, 6 x small A55 cores).
        • They don't care about how deep the blacks on their screen are. If you frequently watch movies or view darker images on your phone in a dark environment, you'll care. If you don't do either or only do so in bright environments, you won't care about the dark greys of LCDs vs the deep blacks of OLEDs. You'll probably prefer not having to worry about burn-ins.
        • kudo…the devil is in the details.

Users are likely to have read paid-reviews & hence they're a guide-only. Through experience, we realise the subtlety of the stated strength…& the weaknesses they overlooked.

Users needs, preferences, standard, circumstances & flexibility are ALL-different…read widely.

      • Yes I failed to mention the RAM as in this price range, the target market isn't doing too much with the phone. With the SOC being as weak as it is, you won't run into anything that will drag on the RAM. Take Genshin Impact for example even running it on low settings the GPU and SOC can't process fast enough to keep the FPS up.

You need to match the components to the what the whole phone can physically do. No point paying extra for things that won't make any difference in real life.

Storage is taken care of by the Micro SD slot.

At this price range… I would take the savings and put towards a new phone in 1-2 years time. Phones in this price range aren't designed to be future proofed.

    • +1

for me the oled is worth it, i look at screen a lot but not the sim …

  • showing as $329 for me, however even at that price it's a pretty neat price!

Amazon also price matching the same $329 -> https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CJHZXFMX [Sold & Shipped by Amazon AU so not a third party seller]

Upgraded to this phone from a Pixel 4a 5g about 3 months ago. So far, very happy with it. No issues at all, and I've been surprised with the quality of the camera despite reading reviews saying that it was the weak point of this phone. I took it to Japan with me and got a bunch of great shots and videos.

edit - my one complaint, the range of cases sold for this phont kinda sucks and I don' tlike the case it comes with. Ended up getting one of these

  • Good phone, but it's hard to recommend because of Moto's absolutely pitiful software and customer support (Last AU security update was in September, customer support don't have any ETA when it's coming, even though it's rolled out everywhere else)

    • +1

My G82 security update was Feb 24.

  • Android 14 is now available for G84

    • +1

How? Not seeing any updates on my handset

      • My notification showed up about a week ago. I have yet to update though. Perhaps it's staggered?

  • +1

Anyone else having trouble redeeming their 10% off instore?

    • When I went to get the Motorola G14 from BigW, they didn't let me use the 10%, if that helps…

      • +1

Thanks for replying. What happens to me is when I scan my card purchasing an eligible item, I go straight to the tap your card and pay. Before I would get the message, would you like to use your 10% discount. Same thing happened with a non self serve checkout. I called up everyday rewards and they said do your shop and we will reimburse you with points equivalent to 10% off your shop. Just wondering if anyone else had the problem of the 10% off not activating when scanning in store at woolies or big W (it's happening at both for me, can't even redeem my free perk for the month)

    • +2

I'm having trouble using the 10% off online. I guess it won't apply in store either.

      • +1

What’s the problem? Did you link your Woolies card? You also need to apply the discount code which won’t work until you link your card to your BIG W account.

      • +3

        I used the code
        XMAR2024

        • Yep, that’s the one ☝️

        • Thanks, first time using woolroworths rewards, didnt know you need to enter a code for it. I thought it was just liking the card.

  • +1

This has to beat Pixel Tensor for me to buy

  • -1

Doubled the RAM and storage of the base iPhone 15 costing over $1.2K for less than $300. No wonder Apple is making record profits.

    • Lol, a phone is more than storage/ram.

    • -1

what are you yapping on about

      • Imagine comparing Motorola with Apple and complaining about the price difference.

      • +3

Hes commenting that motorola are able to provide more ram, and storage even at a budget tier.

Moving up in storage tiers on iPhones shows a much higher percentage price change.

So i think the point he was making was either Apple have pitiful NAND wholesale pricing (which seems unlikely), otherwise he was assuming that large markups on components they have cheaper access to, is one of the reasons their profits are so high.

I sort of agree, there's a lot more to a phone than just storage, so the base price isnt a comparison point, but for an otherwise identical iPhone, moving up in storage adds significantly more than I'd imagine apple are paying for NAND, even with a 20 point or so profit.

        • I understand what they're saying, I just think it's an absurd way to look at a phone considering purely numbers are not everything (as you've mentioned as well). You explained it well though 😆

I'm no fan of Apple, I do also agree their pricing schemes are despicable (looking at their MacBook upgrades specifically)

    • -2

May be there is more to a PREMIUM-phone?

One of the criteria that is often overlooked is technical-obsolescent. A 2016 iphone-SE A1723 can CALL @ 4G (VoLTE), when Telstra/Optus turn off their 3G-network: later this year. This's because it can operates the band (frequencies) that AU-carriers deliver, & longer software support: 5 years ish. Many OTHER-2016 device can't call @ 4G.
      https://support.apple.com/kb/SP738?locale=en_AU

Imo, 3 to 5 years life is good-enough…but some-users are willing to pay for this feature.

  • +1

I've got the G54 and its an amazing quality budget phone, great if you want something to tinker or develop on.

These 84's looked good also, a little bit thinner and slightly higher build quality / better camera.

  • +2

Thanks OP. ordered one about 30 mins ago and already received pickup notice. Now have to looking for a good phone case deal

  • +1

Thanks OP, it was a no brainer at price. Coming from a Pixel 6a. Not overly concerned about software updates as I'll just update the phone when the g85 goes on sale.

    • The Pixel 6a is still a relatively new phone. May I ask what made you change?

      • +1

More RAM, longer battery life, higher peak brightness, faster charging, larger screen, higher refresh rate. Motorola are really hard to beat for value: https://nanoreview.net/en/phone-compare/motorola-moto-g84-vs…

        • +1

Surprises me that I don't see many people using Motorola phones.

          • @shxhshzhz: They weren't good value 12 months ago. It's a recent move back to the best value area for Motorola's

I had my partner and mum and I all on Motorola's from 2016-2020. Then migrated us all onto Xiaomis around 2020, 2021. Now I've migrated us all back to Motorola's over the last 6 months. I've always been keen for the best value for under $200 for mum and around $300 for myself and my partner.

            • +1

@sickllama: My $250 edge 20 fusion was a great deal 12 months ago

          • @shxhshzhz: That actually is strange. Through pure coincidence 5 or so friends at the last big gathering we had, all had g82's.

And we're all from very different walks of life, lol.

We noticed each other when someone did a 'chop chop' and suddenly spoke up, haha.

Few of my dads mates have g52's also.

I cant get away from Motos even if I try, haha.

  • +4

No gorilla Glass is a shame

    • +2

i use flip case for $10 and came with glass screen protector …

    • +2

Gorilla Glass is just as prone to smashing than regular glass in my experience.

    • +7

It's unethical to make glass from gorillas anyway

    • Will no one think of the gorillas?

    • Yeah, you couldn’t use it without a screen protector.

  • +3

Tempting, let's wait until they are $250.

    • +1

Every day you wait is a day less of software updates you get for it 😝

  • Although there are Big W's all around me, the nearest one with stock is 178kms away. They're fast running out.

  • Trying to check out and get "Unable to continue to checkout, please review the items in your cart." =(

  • Got price matched at JBHIFI

    • For $296?

      • +1

        Yep bought it yesterday

        • Awesome, did you price match online? I would have thought they would only match the 329.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: I told him everyday extra membership is free for 1 month. He showed me on the system it was showing 297 so he said 296 is good.

  • +1

Purchased. Everyday extra is actually a good deal for me as I do all my shopping at Woolworths. Always converted to Qantas. Now I get the 10% off and double points. Yeaah!

Phone is pretty average but it is good value for a burner/backup.

    • Back to say the same thing except I'm extremely happy with this phone. Zero regrets going from a Pixel. Everyday Extra is also a bonus having shopped at Woolies anyway.

  • Picked this up as a stop gap after I dropped and cracked the screen of my S22 Ultra. So far I'm impressed for such a cheap phone.

  • Is this offer this available? How do I get 25% off? I've already activated Rewards extra but could only find 10% discount code. Please help.

    • Think the offer has expired, the price was $329 (currently $399) and with the 10% discount code, it brought it down to $296.10
