Lenovo ThinkCentre M75Q G2: Ryzen 5 PRO 5650GE, 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM $599 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ MSY

420

I understand it is a neg for default 8GB RAM but it is upgradeable dual-channel (up to 64GB). Storage is "merely" 256GB SSD but the upside is BRAND NEW (Vs those refurb). Note that this is a tiny 1L micro form factor which is a huge plus for people want to hide it away.

The CPU (Ryzen 5 PRO 5650GE) was released in 2021/22 but it is actually comparable (or better?) to Intel i5 12-gen (i5-12400T):

Not to mention the AMD built-in graphic (AMD PRO 500 Chipset) is way better than Intel. Please see the link below for spec:

  • Shame this was not available few months ago, i would go for it!

Would love the ozbargain brain trust's opinion on this over something like the Beelink Ser5 for the same price (https://www.amazon.com.au/Beelink-Ryzen7-5800H-PC-Bluetooth/…), which has a more modern CPU and double the storage and ram but is from a less well known brand.

You would not go for a generic brand because heat dissipation (and thus fans noise) is critical in tiny / micro form factor. Also the quality of fans they use / motherboard they wield (has to be designed in house and custom-made) is hard to trust. Can you imagine poor quality fans and motherboard components being used and it certainly won't last long. It is also proved in many reviews that it is common for those generic China brands die in 1-2 years.

    • Would love the ozbargain brain trust's opinion on this over something like the Beelink Ser5

The only reason i would go a tiny over a sff is if i didn't care about the data, reliability or spare parts.
These sff have proven themselves many times to be reliable.

      • +1

Would you referring to the Lenovo ThinkCentre M75Q G2 as tiny or SFF?

        • Lenovo ThinkCentre M75Q G2 SFF

          • +1

@Loot N Plunder: OK.. Lenovo calls the M75Q 'tiny' so wasn't sure if you were saying that the M75Q is unreliable.

          • @Loot N Plunder: It is not SFF. Lenovo ThinkCentre M75Q G2 is indeed a tiny / micro form factor.

    • +1

Beelink SER5 is good and not seeing any issues in forums and reddit.
Now why we user trust Lenevo who doesn't carry AMD products, in tiny pc segments, to get preferential treatment from Intel.

Another consideration is, I will not go for top-end desktop CPU in tiny 1L form because it is not designed to deal with such a high heat level, no matter what design of heat dissipation they say. In your case, the Beelink Ryzen 7 is designed to fail in short period of time.

      • +1

Agree with the premise of needing to have consideration of thermals, but 5800H is a mobile CPU, standard TDP of 45W. I think you should look up more reviews/specs of the other device before making those claims

    • +1

I would pick Ser5 over this, plus it has 100$ discount coupon which is a bonus.

    • +1

Beelink Ser5 has more memory, faster CPU, takes up half the space, etc — no brainer just from the spec. However some of us buy those tiny PCs to run servers 24/7, which I am not sure I'll trust Beelink's unit for this kind of work load (yet).

  • Pics show a serial port, but specs don't mention one. Which one is correct?

    • Specs.

They used stock photos, the ports on the right are extras that could be bought and added when buying directly from Lenovo.

  • A curious alternative to mobile based mini PCs. It's bigger and more expensive (for similar performance) but you do get bios updates and presumably better build quality.

I have a 4350GE version. There is unfortunately no fan control other than setting it to optimised/normal/full speed in bios. Optimised is not bad, but also turns off CPU boost. Normal is a little louder and also ramps up and down more often due to CPU boost. Full speed is a jet engine.

    • That's why I believe i5 / Ryzen 5 (mobile versions) has a good balance of noise and performance, even at "optimised" level and will not go above that (such as i7 / Ryzen 7) because of the heat level and fan noise.

      • The GE versions are 35W.

It's more about the fan curve. Some are more aggressive than others, ideally you would be allowed full control.

        • Have you tried a software solution? I used to hand-tune with SpeedFan.

https://getfancontrol.com/ is a more uptodate tool.

Effectiveness depends on what Lenovo choose to expose to software control, I'd imagine.

by the time you put in extra ram, ssd etc, the price is not that attractive anymore.

    8GB RAM!!

Now that is enough for many to lose their marbles

Hot urine trickling down their soiled pants as they suffer rising anger as well as fear

How dare budget systems only have 8GB of RAM?!

It needs to be 32GB or MOAR

    • Upgradeable though to 64gb

    • lol…

Most people will never know the difference between a 8GB and 16GB system. Then again it's only $27 to add another stick of 8GB 3200MHz DDR4

PS I do get your sarcasm.

    • +1

Exaggeration, 8GB is the minimum amount of RAM I would accept for a Windows machine.

Would I be happy with it? No. Is it usable? Yes.

      • +1

anyone complaing about 8gb needs to get their OCD checked by a GP, ppl don't need 120 tabs open at once

    • Guys it’s ok, this comment is satirising PC hyperfans.

  • +1

Been keeping an eye out for this or another device with the 5650GE for hosting a few dedicated game servers. (35w TDP, 12 threads and solid clock speed).

    Great price, thanks! :)

  • +3

This is exceptionally good hardware for the money, how they got these at this price is insane?
They're nearly $1500 RRP, 6 high performance cores at low power and it's the Pro series to boot.

These would make excellent mini desktops, mini servers, etc. Way better than intel offerings even $300 more expensive.

Reviews show them really performing and quiet.

This model is relatively "old" which is no longer available on Lenovo website. Considering the background of MSY (Asian-owned?), it is no wonder MSY (and the group) acts as a clearance channel for Lenovo surplus stock…?! Any insider around can confirm this? MSY does have other Lenovo stuff for sale but this is the best deal.

      • +2

        MSY is now Umart.

      • This is not relatively old in the slightest? It's literally the latest current model with 35W processor and 6 cores?

No replacement has even been announced, not in the Pro range.

        • It's current gen but also more than 2 years old.

          8xx0GE should be available soon(ish?).

          • @Hiphopopotamus: The 8xx0GE will be ANNOUNCED soonish, by the time it's actually available in a new Lenovo Tiny Q Gen 3, it'll be December or more.

For $599 this performance / speed is insane, it's a hell of a good deal.

I've never bought a new Lenovo/Dell SFF/Tiny PC before (always refurbished) but thinking about buying this as a general office type PC.

I'm surprised the Manufacturer Warranty is only 1 Year.

  • Worth mentioning in the post, these are available on Umart for the same price as MSY (i purchased it through there instead).
I've heard Umart might have had some form of aquisition of MSY recently?

    • I think Umart acquired MSY since 2022 Dec.

  • +1

Thanks for this and I've just placed an order, picked up a HP G6 recently for a stupidly great price and will resell it to bridge the gap.

These USFF are absolutely fantastic and they're my main machine for 99% of the tasks these days.

Would've been nice if they replaced the lesser use ports to USB C though…

Thinking about purchasing one for WFH setup. Any opinion on whether this or Intel NUC 12-13 i5. Thanks!

    • +2

This one is better. It is faster (if not, at least on par) and much cheaper.

      • Thanks a lot @brich1980. Did a bit extra searches and decided to bite the bullet :D.
Last question: Any recommendation for RAM and SSD upgrades?

        • It depends on your usage. With minor usage like web-browsing / document editing, I think 8GB RAM is enough. I will say just set it up and use it for 1-2 weeks. If you feel like the performance is a bit sluggish, then get more RAM. Frankly more RAM is always better. If you don't mind spending extra $1xx, I will recommend buying this pair of 32GB RAM from Amazon:

          https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08GSTF5NJ/

I am not too worried about SSD. I don't play video games, so 256GB is way more than enough (even 128GB is enough for me actually).

  • I think this was a better buy.
    KAMRUI Intel i7-12650H Mini PC, 32GB DDR4, 512GB NVMe SSD, 4K Triple Display, Wi-Fi 6, BT 5.2, $529.99 delivered
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/833304

Intel has 10 cores, AMD 6 cores

    Everything's better except the gpu?

    • +3

As mentioned before, it is about reliability and durability. I can trust Lenovo ThinkCentre for both by paying a bit of premium, but I am not sure about generic Chinese brands.

      • I just wish there is anyone selling the optional GTX1660Ti, guess borderline no one specs them with that option and I've been looking for a while but alas nothing without buying an entire machine with it already specced. Mine's a HP, assume the likes of Lenovo/Dell have similar options.

    • Not even close, that will be hotter, noisier, different power envelope and half the cores are 'fake' intel cores.

The AMD is 6 REAL cores and 12 threads.

      • i7-12650H also has 6 performance cores, 4 efficient cores and 16 threads in total (according to Intel), which is faster than Ryzen 5 5650GE in both single core and multi core performance.

Well, that's just simply looking at the CPU spec. Running a 45W CPU (that may boost up to 115W) inside KAMRUI's tiny chase — either it would be throttling hard, or the fans will be in full blast most of the time.

  • Does anyone have experience with this CPU and Plex?

Looking to replace my aging desktop, and would like something low power/form factor.
