I bought this on the weekend for $129.86. To use for my Starlink Roaming Kit with Caravan + Camping. Extending coverage beyond the Starlink box.

I have two existing outdoor WavLinks APs and am very happy with them. I will transition them to the Ubiquiti ecosystem at some point, but bought them on the cheap at the start.

They are a basic unit, but very happy with them.

  • Does repeater mode creates another Wifi network? Like Router would have ABC_WIFI - does this create ABC_WIFI2 or ABC_WIFI gets extended

    • -1

I believe it is ABC_WIFI2. It would make no sense that ABC_WIFI gets extended, but it could just be boosting of itself and causing all sorts of issues. It wouldn't know what is ABC_WIFI; itself or the parent.

I have these setup in AP mode with Ethernet connected. Configured with the same SSID and password as my house APs so everything switches and roams accordingly.

  • Reviews are not so good

    • I think a lot of mixed reviews and also the experience of users varies. If you know what you are doing, they are a great unit. But I wouldn't pay RRP.

  • What's Mesh operation mode? Does it provide it's own mesh or piggy back on other mesh providers?

  • outdoor ??, but POE LAN connection isn't water/weatherproof => whole this thing is not outdoor/weatherproof. ?

    • You would have the POE connection inside.

I have one of mine in the roof, and the other inside the shed.

How do you think TP Link and Ubiquiti do their Outdoor APs?

      • where does the POE LAN cable plug into unit ? is that waterproof ?

        • -1

          See this image

No, POE adaptor is not waterproof.

Just run a longer CAT5/6 cable to where there is a dry location for your POE adaptor.

        • +1

There is a rubber seal that goes around the cable & screws onto the bottom of the unit. That part is weatherproof.

  • If you currently have unifi gear better to look at the Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC Outdoor Mesh 1167Mbps Dual-Omni Antennas https://amzn.asia/d/1mVyWsq

    • Yes, 100%.

I bought this one for my caravan/starlink kit.

I will be moving my existing Wavlinks outdoor to Ubiquiti when I have the money.

    • I have 2 Ubiquiti APs and want to add an outdoor one and wire it in using POE. Any one in particular you would recommend for that (if you have any knowledge on them)?

      • what model AP's do you currently have, and what radius do you need to cover? (7 years of installing/adminning 10 multi story residential properties - the most important man in the organisation during COVID…didnt get a national award for keeping people in Netflix)

        • A couple of Nano HDs. They get some coverage outside, but not great speed and not in the corners of the block where they have to cut through the most wall.

          • +1

@greennick: Nothing too much wrong with Nano's though you can need more of them for coverage

1st id ask what your config is like, have you left everything as default, on Auto for channels etc, or have you configured it fixed channels, after scanning your surrounding area for best channels for each access point (staggered) and adjusted signal strengths per band? (i.e. usually medium for 2.4ghz, high for 5ghz). There other settings to fiddle with but theyre best done after a period of time and per site basis

We're still using that generation of Unifi, but the LR version, but we've stopped buying spares (in 5 packs - note: no POE injectors) a while ago as it makes no sense going forwards in our case because Unifi had Wifi 6 out and Wifi 7 AP's emerging, and we have had those systems running 24/7 for years, so the next purchase will be an upgrade to new switches (expensive as Unifi have reduced POE budget in some switches, to force you to buy more expensive ones) and new AP's (some of which have higher POE wattage requirements - coincydink?). Having said that we are doing it at scale, but for a home setup if youre not looking to consume massive amounts of data such things may suit

Can find them cheap sometimes, like this (the 2 x AP-AC-LR are the later models (blue box corner) we use) : https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/hurstville/modems-routers/3x…

            • @amosmilburn: Yeah, I used a wifi analyser to set the channels. It's not bad reception, just gets a bit worse in certain spots where the bricks on the line of sight are the most.

      • The one in the link it's fully waterproof

  • Granny flat?

Or backyard shed that doesn't get normal coverage

      • -1

This is what I have done. One on the side of my garage, one of the back shed. 1200sqm block with complete WiFi.

  • is it just me or the spider shape indoor wifi routers finally meet their outdoor stick insect siblings?
