AC (wifi5) is pretty old now.
Personally I would go the TP-Link AX1800 Wireless Dual Band Ceiling Mount Access Point (EAP610) for the extra $50 at a minimum.

    • If WiFi 6 is important to you and your devices support it, sure.

Yeah this is one of those products where you need to research your use case. No point spending the extra $50 if you aren't going to use it. typical speeds for 5 is 200mbps which will cover a lot of the populations use case.

        • -2

With NBN looking to move the 100mbs to 500mbs for the same price in September it may makes wifi5 less appealing.
But yes, use case and budget are important.

  • The recent desire to make access points a design statement has me quite bemused I must say.

  • I am researching and pretty new to this, looking for ozbargainers experience / thoughts. which one is better for access points - TP link or ubiquiti/unifi ?

    • TP Link offers great value for money and you will not notice any difference in end usage between the two comparable devices.

      • apart from maybe data security :)

      • TP Link offers great value for money

        Bonus back doors too!

        • good for those into that sort of thing

      Ubiquiti 💯

      • why would you choose ubiquiti?

        • -2

They are not riddled with security issues.

I’d happily use another brand so long as the specs were good and you can flash OpenWRT.

          • @PainToad: They've had their own share of security breaches, that they actively avoided informing the community of. Not to mention their history of terrible software and support, and monitoring data without end-user consent.

TP-Link are far from perfect of course, but let's not pretend Ubiquiti are any better.

For the price, TP-Link gear - particularly the APs - perform far better.

            • +1

@wintermadness: at least ubiquiti aren't state owned and sponsored for data breeches.

    • TP Link - Great for Budget and General Use. You can easily mix and match, do not always need Omada.
Ubiquiti - Great if you have the entire equipment and stick to the one Eco System.

At home, I run Ubiquiti and love it. Multiple buildings with different APs. The control is awesome!

If I am doing an installation for a home and/or business, depending on requirements and budget would depend if I do a Ubiquiti quote. For basic requirements and maybe single building, TP Link. Larger install, Ubiquiti.

If you have the budget, go and spend on Ubiquiti. Otherwise, go TP Link. I would love to do Ubiquiti every day, but sometimes the budget isn't there to support it.

  • Can I use these APs paired with the Optus Ultra Wifi Gen 2?

    • +1

Yes. Set the same SSID as your Optus Router and away you go. These are not a Mesh Point, so you would need to run/use ethernet cabling.

Just plug into the Yellow Ports and then configure the APs.

      • There you go, thank you!

  • If wifi 7 is too expensive, i will at least get a wifi 6 (released in 2019) or 6e router, if they aren't much more expensive. Wifi 5 is pretty outdated.
