Hey Ozbargainer,

!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS TYRE!!!!!!

I apologise for my ignorance with the safety concerns with this kind of tyres, I leave this post here for educational purposes to remind everyone not to buy this kind of "no name" branded tyres.

Please read the following comments when considering buying new tyres.

Hi Ozbargainers, I was looking for new tyres for My FG Falcon G6E and I found this deal on eBay, it's the cheapest I can find as elsewhere charge for at least $110 for similar size tyre. $70 (after applying coupon code) + $20 for fitting on pick up. They have other size tyres as well on their eBay store so you can try to look for the ones you need. Pick up at Prestons NSW (south west of Sydney)

    Targeted eBay Code.

Promoting no-name tyre brand (100% will be a hard compound & poor tread design) that will do shockingly bad in the wet and will be a safety risk to both the buyer and all road users around them just to save a buck. Would you wear thongs play a game of footy? Take my downvote.

Wish tyres we're better regulated in this country, they're the only maintaining contact between your car and the road, and most consumers have no idea about them (so regulators should intervene). If only you could get defects/failed safety checks for dodgy brands (as well as low tread depth) then so many of these 3rd party importers would venture elsewhere

    • +7

      But, but, but… it’s a genuine Goalstar?!?

    • +1

Yeh, the Goodyear quote is dumb, but 100% correct - if it only saves you once a year… Tyres are the one thing you'll wish you didn't skimp on as you slide off the road.

      • I agree, spend way less on your brake pads and more on tyres hahaha

    • Thank JDMcarfan for pointing that out and sorry for my ignorance in quality of tyres, would you please let me know which brand would be better on a budget? Thanks

      • +3

Try a wrecker for a complete set of used quality tyres. that might give you a year to save up for something a little safer for you, your family and other road users. i'm not having a go btw I've been stony broke and couldn't afford tyres in the past too. Getting rides to work sucks.

        • +1

Thanks @feisty, that's a good idea Thanks very much

          • +1

@ambert: Came to second the wreckers - I had new tyres on my car for maybe 3 months before it was written off after an accident

Do your due diligence, but it’s not a terrible place to look

            • +1

@linkindan: Thanks @linkindan, I think I will just leave the wreckers for now, as I am lack of the knowledge with tyres, I will get a tyre from MyCar as suggested by @JDMcarfan

              • @ambert: Also a fair option

They have a great after fitting service, as well as their “own brand” tyres manufactured by Goodyear with decent warranties

        • +1

Not be a pessimist (and I was a frugal student who did this too) but I would only recommend this if you.
          1. Can see it’s from a written off car (I.e not a used example that’s just being flogged off)
          2. Is near new (look for a tyre date stamp from 2021 onwards)
          3. Is considerably cheaper than new

There’s a lot of wrecker looking to offload shitty tyres to unsuspecting people to make a buck (I’ve made this mistake and learnt from it) or come to nearly the same price as buying a new set anyways.

Buying a near new set from FB marketplace is also a good shout but tends to favour 4x4s/utes where people offload new tyres as they’ve upgraded so don’t think you’ll have too much luck there.

          Best of luck

if your current tyres are still legal, then wait for a buy 3 and get one free (or similar) sale from the major retailers and go with the brands offered.
Any decent tyre brand won't be in the "Budget" tier, but they can still be relatively affordable (<$100 and what you're getting isn't a tyre, 150-200 is acceptable).
Brand recommendations (rough order from cheapest to expensive):
Kumho, Falken, Hankook, Goodyear, Dunlop, Bridgestone, Pirelli, Continental, Yokohama, BFGoodrich (SUV), Michelin
There may be some brands that are good outside this list, but I think I've captured 99% of acceptable brands (don't buy anything outside this)

Unfortunately your size isn't too common, so you won't get the best deals (nor variety) but for a tyre deal that's relevant to you and current:
        https://www.mycar.com.au/tyres/size/235-50R17

I've had luck getting big box companies to match Tempe Tyres so give that a go with your local (YMMV) if going for a different tyre

        • Wow, thank you very much @JDMcarfan, for your informative comment and also found me a deal to suit my car, much appreciated, you are a Champ, mate :) I will go for the kumho deal, since I only need one tyre as my left rear tyre bursted as I enter onto the driveway to a shopping centre.

          • +1

@ambert: Not a problem glad it helped

          • +1

@ambert: You shouldn't have different tyres between left and right side on the same axle.

            • +1

@eraser215: That's good point, thanks for the reminder, I will get two for the rear instead.

    • +2

Their eBay ad says "Goalstar or Equivalent"….so God only knows what crap they could send you.

    • But Reg Reagan wears thongs to play footy and he's hard as nails!

50 sidewall is the wrong size for a FG with 17s - it should be a 235/45/17

    • Works out to $78 a tyre if sent to a participating fitter. (Fitting extra - 235/45/17)

    • On my Falcon owner manual says 235/50 R17 96V G6,G6E or 245/45 R17 95W for XR6

    • BA, BF yes (or 225/50r17 depending on the trim) - FG no. FG is 245/45R17 or 235/40R17 depending on trim

    • +1

My FG MK2 is meant to use 235/50/17 as stock (as per the tyre placard). I run 245/45/17 though

Tyres are the most important safety feature of your car - Buying the bottom of the barrel tyres is a bad idea.

    • -1

      not the brakes?

      • Did formula SAE back in uni. Learned early on the top 5 most important components on the car were.
        Tyres
        Tyres
        Tyres
        Tyres
        Brakes

And yes how you make those tyres work optimally is included in there.

        • Its all relative, you need a combination of all of the above.

No point in having a grade tyres, if you put SCA brake pads in and cook them. No point in putting Bendix in when you get cheap tyres and lock them up every two metres.

        • 5 most important components on the car

          Alternative list-

          Fuel/ power)
          Engine/ motor
          Wheels
          Brakes
          Tyres

      • Compared to tyres, crap brake pads aren't so bad thanks to ABS as they're not likely to give out suddenly and make you spin into a tree or oncoming traffic. Good brakes are useless if the tyres don't stick.

Obviously no-one is suggesting neglecting brakes when they go, but the difference between cheap and expensive brakes (with proper installation!) is minor compared to good vs bad tyres.

These work better in the bin

  • Probably OK for necklacing but that would be all.

  • +3

Op is probably someone who doesn't understand much about car and that's ok. Not everyone knows everything well. I'd say something as bad as this in tech's related deal.

Hi OP, if your tyres are still ok, try to wait for Kmart auto. Annual sales. If not, opt for buy 3 get 1 free promo. The extra is well worth it imo👍

    • +2

Thank you @donny donny for your suggestions, absolutely agree with you :) @JDMcarfan just found me a deal from MyCar and I will go with that.

  • might be ok for the skid pan

  • +4

hey good on you Ambert for listening to the good suggestions given. a lot of people would have just got angry and negative.

    • +5

Hi @feisty, thank you for your kind words :), I think the comments from OZB community are very valuable and informative, i like to learn more and keep a positive mindset with any comments/suggestions, especially this is related to fundamental safety concerns, it is good to learn about it and keep safe.

    Never, EVER skimp on tyres.

It's not just a case of "but I don't drive fast, I don't need high performance tyres". Good quality tyres are like night and day for wet weather handling and wet braking compared to cheap and nasty tyres.

I've had to do some emergency braking in the past (including where a child ran out from behind a car) and I have no doubt that the good tyres I always had on my cars saved not only me but others as well (including that child at the time).

A set of tyres will typically last about 3 years give or take the kilometers you do. The difference between a set of good tyres and crap tyres is as little as $200 - $300 in many cases. I've seen people spend that on a night out.

Seriously, don't cheap out on tyres. Stick to good quality brands, Continental, Goodyear, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Michelin etc. Wait for the various 4 for the price of 3 deals that happen regularly.

Have a look at the site below for good customer reviews of various car tyre brands:

had hoped for someone to have researched who makes them, etc rather than cheap is bad. BUT when i buy tyres i read the Choice magazine tyre review, they test braking cornering wet and dry , etc against many brands. You local library should have Choice magazine , some libraries have online versions, and libraries are FREE so every ozbargainer has a library card right ?

An FG G6E is a nice car. Why would you fit cheap tyres?

If you want a budget tyre, Grenlander are very good but don't expect big mileage. Personally, fit Michelin and have safe trouble free motoring for 50k km+++

  • If you need cheap but above average, look into Laufenn (better known here as Hancook) their S Fit EQ series is surprisingly predictable. They've been $75 a corner before for 235/45/17.

    • Thanks for letting me know, I wish I could fit 235/45/17, but I did some research said the FG needs the 235/50 96V or 245/45 99Y coz of the weight of the car is heavier than BF.

  • For all those complaining about these tyres, They make a great tree swing, New and not dirty used ones and if you're creative enough, you can carve them into garden swans….
