Getting magazines delivered as kid was the best.
Disney Adventures, Hyper, and Official PlayStation Magazine.

    • Yearly Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. Had to subscribe to US directly for that.

      • I remember buying them from my local newsagent.
        Circa 2003-2007.

      • Upvoted to negate the bedwetters negging you.

        • Thanks, yeah no idea why.

Probably someone that preferred Dolly or Reader's digest.

      • Borders stores used to have a lot US only magazines, and overseas versions of magazines that also had localized Australian releases. As an example, the US, Australian, Italian and British versions of Vogue for a particular month were completely different, different articles, pictures and advertisements.

Digital magazines are good in that they don't use up physical space, but the images don't look as good as a real magazine (too much jpeg compression, too small a resolution). Textbooks, artbooks, visual encyclopedias likewise suffer from the same problem too. Text and vector images don't require much space, but raster images do. There is a little known format called DjVu that produces Ebooks that are about half the size of Pdf for the same image quality. For some reason most pirated, scanned chess books are in Djvu format.

    What is new in Chess?

You've got a former world champion accusing other grandmasters of cheating, and the current World No. 1 believing that Fischer random chess in classical time format while traditional chess layout in bullet and blitz time formats are the way of the chess future.

      • Remotely controlled anal beads were a new method of cheating. Does that count?

        • I'm out of the loop, this was a twitter accusation, but it wasn't confirmed, no?

          • @OkayFray: Not 100% sure tbh. Just seemed hilarious either way. Toilet cheating has also been a thing I think.

@WhyAmICommenting: Toilet cheating, where people would go put notebooks, and later mobiles in a toilet cubicle before the match and then go access it at critical points was a thing for a while. Haven't heard of any accusations lately.

There was also cheating at a lower level in tournaments where they let you use little devices to record your moves (rather than having to write them down and then upload them later). The brands were all approved but people hacked/modded them to run a chess engine, and conveniently you've already put in all the moves up to the current game state :D

@OkayFray: If you're talking about Niemann vs Carlson then yes, it was just a twitter accusation. Unconfirmed, probably unlikely to be true.

            The main issues were:
            1. Niemann had a weird game, and he had a history of cheating during online games. Really suss, don't think we'll ever know unless Niemann gives a deathbed confession in 60+years time. As with any peak performance activity, things get weird when you have high level competitors starting at 12.
            2. The beads would have worked, as would have a lot of other cheating methods. Magnus was unhappy about the match but really he was already burnt out having to be The World Champion for so many years.

Yan Chenglong also had an accusation and got stripped of a title/win because of it but in chinese chess (Xiangqi). Offically was stripped for "disrupting public order" and displaying "extremely bad character" and I never heard enough info as to if it was legit.

Thanks! Great one. I've got a number of these magazines, recently had cancelled as it was pricy good to see insights into the Tata Steel Chess tournament which was exciting until the last round

  • New (in chess) magazine just dropped!

  • where did Magnus post this?

    Sounds exciting reading

  • I surprised people still play chess. Now we have video games and a large variety of board games. 500 years ago there was just chess, checkers, dice and cards.
