how about quality
LG vs LiteOn vs Pioneer vs Samsung
some ideas?
I'd say pioneer, most stable brand imo.
LiteOn also have an excellent track record for optical drives…Sony wouldn't dare use them as an OEM manufacturer if they were sketchy IMHO! ;)
I like pioneer, but they always seem to have issues with nero Discspeed.
Optical drive brands are all pretty much on an even playing field nowadays. It's just the features that separate models apart.
I'd personally recommend LG. I have an LG Blu-ray/HD DVD-ROM from 2007 that's still going strong with moderate use.
For the mentioned prices in order I would recommend LG, Lite-On, Samsung, Pioneer.
Note: This is a Blu-Ray Reader, not a Blu-Ray writer.
This should be in the main post….
Please be aware this model has a large bright blue power button/status light on the front that some people might find annoying.
If you are not a fan of this or don't like it lighting up the whole room and constantly flashing when in use. As suggested earlier there are always cheaper alternatives to look at.
Oh dear god I hate blue leds. They are the work of the devil.
Not a fan either. But recalling my early days in the silent PC community and all the time, expense and frustration involved in dealing with noise issues, workarounds for the pet peeve of a distracting LED seem stupendously trivial to me.
I would personally find having a silent PC pretty redundant if I had a rancor living under my floor.
Sticker, texter, liquid paper, paint?
You have options…
Disconnect the led…
You think anyone capable of that is going to whinge about the LED?
I do, it's cause i'm lazy :P
Voided Warranty. As the power disk tray button doubles as the status light.

Lol, I have to give you that one!
Voided Warranty. As the power disk tray button doubles as the status light.
I said disconnect the led, as in the component, not remove the whole thing.
Every electronic device I own appears to have blue LEDs so at least it matches the décor.
Though sometimes I do feel under-dressed if I'm not wearing a Tron light suit in my bedroom.
Blu-ray Burner for ~$8-11 more (depending on store & location).

Most stagnant price! I paid $66 + $8 postage (from a different store) for this exact drive in February of last year :S
It is a good drive, though. It's given me no troubles for the last nearly two years :)
I bought one a while ago for the cyberlink bluray playback software. Works ok, and is a good drive for a htpc, as you don't need to burn blurays on a htpc once you have makemkv.
I have this drive too. Bought it about 12 months ago for a similar price.
I've had no problems with it. The blue light is annoying (my toddler wants to press it whenever he sees it flashing) but fixable.
Not a bad price for this particular model, but not really a deal.
Am i missing something here? http://www.mwave.com.au/sku-17090085-Lite_On_IHES312_12x_Int…
Retail pack as well, sure it's Mwave, but eh.
Not a neg, but not a positive either. I'd prefer LiteOn over Samsung as well, imo.
Ehh… Unless you really like Samsung, you can get cheaper.
eg. MSY;
LG $55
LiteOn $50
Pioneer $63
