BYD Atto 3 MY23 Models - $1000 Cash Back - On Top Of $2023 Cash Back @ BYD Automotive

1962

Just went into the Indooroopilly BYD dealership and they're offering an additional $1000 cashback on top of the existing $2023 cashback offer.

I was told this offer hasn't been published and only applies to those who sign a contract at the dealership, and they weren't sure if it was nationwide.

Apparently this deal will only last this weekend.

                • @ruprectaus: More than 75% of utes are made in Thailand and yes I know Hilux are made there but I don't know any Toyota's in Australia that's made in China

            • +1

@Aureus: Exactly! It's just a reality of more efficient affordable manufacturing of EVs. It's like solar panels, a majority are chinese made and a minority elsewhere

            • +1

@Aureus: The two biggest selling vehicles Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux are manufactured in Thailand!

I don't think the issue is where they are built it's by whom they are built by, the Japanese not only master this but set the standard even against the European stuff in many ways

              • +2

@DannyBoy: Exactly… And BYD has been building EVs for years in China

            • +1

@Aureus: They are not. Labour costs will go up as China moves up the value chain in manufacturing. most export models will likely come from Thailand or Indonesia Toyota/Honda has already built export factories there.

            • +4

@Aureus: It’s decades old perception of China that’s is way outdated. China has now replaced Japan as top automobile exporter in the world. Their dominance in EV is only getting larger. Not even protectionist policies in US will stop it. Especially as German makers are slow to adapt and Japan decided to go with the risky hydrogen power.

          • +6

@cheaptech20: Don't worry about the negs, you are way ahead of your times. In 2011, Musk was laughing when asked about BYD. in 2024, Musk warned BYD will demolish rivals without trade barriers.

        • +6

For those thinking “made in china” EV is trash need to have a read on how Volkswagen lost their market share in China/south east Asia. The Chinese EV manufacturing ecosystem was improved significantly when Tesla decided to start a factory there. Tesla lifted the standard and quality of the EV parts in china and the Chinese government basically sign free cheques for all china domestic EV manufacturer R&D (think battery)
If you are not a fan of EV or having the need of petrol to make you feel like a man, by all means keep buying those German made cars. But the Chinese EVs, much like Thanos, are inevitable. They will flood the low price point market like what the Korean car used to, and eventually take over the majority of the market (like what Kia/hyundai did)

        • i looked at byd and tesla, sure tesla is more refined but for some people it’s just to get from A to B, but then i drive a bmw ICE so what’s important to me might be different. EV aren’t complex hardware wise, and cockpit plastics and layout what i find needs some work in the byd atto but once moving it’s like other EVs at that price bracket. BMW don’t even make their own electric motors for EV, EV makes car manufacturing much simpler.

What a totally legit and convincing link. Some ai summary of a doofus YouTube channel with zero evidence.

      • +9

        Probably his youtube channel

    • +1

Typical "I know it all" with so much courage & confidence by a Trump style shouter.

    • +1

"The Electric Viking" is as bad as sky news. Not sure who's been lining his pockets. He used to be impartial and stays on topic about a year or more ago

  • +19

Apparently this deal will only last this weekend.

Reminds me of rug stores 'closing down'

    • +19

And yet, after 10 years , they still have a closing down sale on the weekend

    • +5

Apparently this deal will only last this weekend.

That is because on Monday it'll be $2,000 off

    • And the stingy warranty period for items like the infotainment, shock absorbers, etc. suggests a clear lack of confidence in the quality of their own product.

      • -1

the infotainment warranty is telling you 3 years of software updates for the car - if you're lucky

can you imagine spending 50k on this?

just get a model 3 - the efficiency alone is going to more than make up for the 9k and it'll last decades longer imho

    • lol, imagine being sucked into this crap deal

    • Or house.

  • +2

In Victoria do we still have to pay government more to drive ev?

      • +5

I spent $38K on solar + battery to power my Tesla for free.
Break even is about 17 years.

        • +7

By that time you will have to buy 2 more tesla and break even going up to 100 years.🤣🤣🤣🤣

          • @Ekoz: TSLA down more than 50% from all time highs, my man.

        • Whats your solar and battery capacity?

        • +2

It's not free until year 18 lol

Could have spent that money on Tesla stocks and made more than the electricity would cost you

        • I did something different, took the money and invested it in PME.AX and NVO.NYSE and a ebike a couple years ago. So far NVO is up 120% and PME up 112% (I have an international Charles Schwab account) and the ebike takes cents to charge.

        • Look at Amber electricity: you should be able to reduce your break even time somewhat. I've been with them for 4 months and am about $550 ahead;;;;;that is I have not paid for electricity, I have been paid for my battery use. (here we go)

        • Your panels or battery won’t last years?

      • +8

Where do you get this idea from lol

EVs are typically charged at night time when no one is using the electricity because they are sleeping…

Some suppliers are offering $0.08c per Kwh between 12am to 6am which is enough for most.

And if someone chooses to charge during the day we have too much solar power to spare.

        • +3

Exactly, sometimes the retailers are paying to supply us with electricity in those low demand, high PV output times

      • Why does this comment have so many negs? Once that unknown EV (& home conversion) quota’s is met, everything is going up. Who do you think pays road tax? Every person at the pump. People are already getting surveys from energy providers asking if they prefer to have regular planned black-outs or pay extra for consistency.

    • +9

No. That was overturned at the high court.

    • Vic gov hates us!

      • +2

No, … well maybe yes, the idiots put us well over $130 billion in debt… and counting

    • No, the EV tax (road user charge) was ruled to be unconstitutional and no longer applies

    • No, though we don't have anything to reduce upfront purchase cost unless you can lease and avoid quality for the FBT exemption.

  • +4

They take away the subsidy and lo and behold they discount their cars by that value

Gov subsidies dont and never will work, just gives them more of a profit margin.

    • +2

Don’t you like idiots generalising things from things they don’t understand to things they don’t even know exist

  • +6

I just find the BYD cars so ugly. Personal preference I guess.

    • +11

The interior of BYD Atto 3 is very polarising. It’s definitely one of those “you either like it or hate it” designs.

The BYD Seal on the other hand is so much better. It’s definitely much more premium looking on the inside.

      • +1

I dislike the twisting door handle

      • +1

I can't get over the whale penis dash and tacked on speaker pods.

        Really feels cobbled together.

        Seal is 100% better.

        • If you’re curious they’re actually muscle strands. And the vents are supposed to represent weights on a rack.

It’s better interior design than “cost cutting chic”

      • Does anyone actually 'love' it?

    • +4

BYD Seal looks nice the rest are definitely head turners for the wrong reasons

    • I rather surprised by their design really. It turns out BYD hired German chief designer Wolfgang Egger. oh…

    • +1

So am i when looking into mirror, but my mind says my heart is beautiful 😊

    • +4

Yeah definitely personal preference- I like the exterior of the Atto a lot

      • Even the 'Build Your Dreams' logo on the back, and VW ID3-style patterned C pillar?

        • +1

The C pillar is good. The build your dreams is being removed.

  • +6

Always found the interiors look too tacky in BYDs.

  • +6

    A car called Atto

    • Probably the brainchild of Jono, Matt-o and Xiping-o

  • +3

Eventually these ev cars will become like smart phones where you can get them cheaper after a year they are released. Amazon is now selling EVs online. So can't wait for Samsung to start selling so I can use tradein and other discounts to make it under $100 😜

    • Can't wait for Officeworks to price match

    • Renault = Samsung

Plug-In Hybrids Are Booming in the World’s Biggest EV Market
As EV growth slows, cheaper vehicles that can also run on gasoline are gaining ground—a challenge for all-electric makers such as Tesla.
    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-02-21/hybrid-pl…?

    • +1

It's definitely interesting to watch it all unfold. Depending on which talking head you listen to apparently EVs are losing popularity because of battery range issues caused by freezing temperatures and uncertainty around how much used/second hand EVs are worth because the battery might be fubared and can cost a considerable amount to replace. I won't lie, if I had the disposable income or cash to burn I'd get one just because but looking at it from a purely bang for buck they don't make any sense, well most new cars don't if you can get a good used car at a reasonable price, which is a lot harder to do now than it used to be.

      • Why dont they make sense bang for buck? This is 48k a comparable suv would be fully loaded 1.6l turbo kona at 46k plus ORC.

If you can salary sacrifice then you essentially get an interest free loan with an ev, plus running costs discounted by your personal tax rate.

The you get $2k a year on saving fuel.

Cost saving on fuel alone would make up the depreciation on the car/battery. Wouldn't make sense to buy a comparable ice vehicle, granted ev suits your driving patterns.

        • Used cars in good condition are better. Why spend $45k when a $10k used car does the same job? I know they are different cars etc but from a dollar point of view used cars make more sense. This is ozbargain :-) If talking new car then yes I agree totally different story.

          • @tessel: That's not a comparison if you are looking at used ICE vs brand new EV

Used EVs are coming down in price you can find used Teslas for mid 30ks

            • @May4th: You can compare them in terms of best bang for buck. Used ICE cars win. Also, you mentioned exactly what I said above. Used prices for EVs are unknown and that's why they are falling. Battery degradation is an unknown what the market is willing to pay for a used EV when the battery is out of warranty is being tested as prices fall. $30k for a used Tesla versus $10k for a used ICE. The ICE is still the best bang for buck. If people want to buy an EV because they want to, that's fine and I totally get that not all purchases are based on getting the best bang for your buck.

              • +1

@tessel: Well yeah obviously it's gonna be bang for buck. It's a beat down ice car that's a decade old with outdated features/safety standards vs a modern car with all the fruits.

I'd bet my left nut you would be financially ahead on a used Tesla after 10 years vs a 10k beater. Maintenance and eventual repairs on the beater while an ev saves you about 2k a year not having to buy petrol.

Why not just get an ebike or a push bike to save even more money? Does the same job - getting you from A to B.

  • +8

Still way overpriced, the same model in china only costs 30k

    • +12

      Everything is Australia is overpriced.

    • They don't quality control the China ones like they do here where the ACCC will come after them.

      • -1

Nonsense everything has quality control but just might not be a good job

Also CCP will go after them don't worry lol

    • +2

Tesla Y in China is about $20k cheaper Sydney (no gov incentives) too. China is the most competitive EV market.

    • -1

i think it's still overpriced at 30k lol

  • +1

Waiting for the Amazon fire sale .

  • +1

    Quick run.

  • +4

Looks like they are having issues moving MY23 stock - as per many other like Mazda (an their new CX-60/90 range)

    Waiting till it's a $5k discount then I'll consider the Atto :P

  • +4

Sick of paying $2/L petrol, if the price drops around $40k, will buy it 100%

  • Did anybody pull the trigger?

Was already considering this and it's quite a sweetener! Unfortunately not a lot of time to mull this one (posted 2pm Saturday and BYD closed on Sunday)

  • +15

Went to buy an atto. Came out with a seal instead.

    • +2

Waiting for mine too, very impressed and excited

  • -7

My friend BYD couldn't fully charge it overnight, what is the point of it.

    • +7

Your friend needs to buy a wall charger if they want to fully charge their car overnight.

      • Any recommendations?

        • +1

I don't have an EV yet, so I can't give recommendations.

    • +4

Your friend is probably charging it via a wall outlet.

    • My friends tesla/genesis/Mercedes could charge overnight too, what's the point in all of it.

Tell me you don't know sh*t about EV's without telling me.

  • -3

    These have Lifepo batteries :(

Slow to charge, slow to discharge.

Also can't really say I'm a fan of Chinese engineering even if they are great cloners.

    • +2

They have LFP batteries, which is normal for Chinese cars and is a better battery chemistry in a lot of ways.

      • -6

Safer after an accident is the only one in aware of.

        • +9

Cheaper, safer and more charge cycles. There only major weakness is being lower energy density then NMC.

          • +1

@Aureus: Joys of the EV world. It's a shame the batteries are the biggest let down, the brushless motor is great

    • +6

I prefer the LFP batteries in BYD as you can charge them to 100% whenever you want.
NMC batteries in some other EVs are recommended to be charged to only 80% most of the time.

    • +1

A true ozbargainer swap them with ladda once.

    • Standard range model 3 and Y use LFP batteries. So be sure to take those off your shopping list.

Energy density and discharge are the only disadvantages. This ain't a sports car chief.

FYI - the Tesla batteries manufactured by BYD were able to sustain higher charge rates vs the ones manufactured by CATL for their model Y.

  • do you still need to haggle to get a good price?

    • Byd is like buying smeg off hn. They are set prices. They then receive a rebate. Byd have set policies on their interior/exterior add-ons, however the dealership can do the same service, using a different brand, purchased separately.

      • Sorry I don't think I follow lol. If you compare it to HN then you do need to haggle?
