Paid $499 for this 16 months ago. Crazy.

Same thing people will be saying with their 7800X3D 16 months from now lol

      • Probably not since there'll be a 8800x3d (or 9900x3d since amd skips numbers) 16 months later. 5800x3d will forever remain the best cpu for am4, same can't be said for am5 yet.

Well kudo to AMD for keeping AM4 going as long as it does. Same thing cant be said about Intel though especially with their 13th gen and 13th gen Plus (aka 14th gen) lol

Been a few 5800X3D deals lately.. hopefully the price will start to drop

    • +5

Pretty sure it’s dropped quite a bit in the US and other countries since the release of the 5700X3D.

I’d expect it to come down quite soon

Anyone able to explain AMD's naming convention like I am five?

    • bigger numbers are better

      • +2

Bit oversimplification as the current Ryzen 7 7800X3D is the best gaming CPU which outperformed even "bigger number" CPU like the 7900, 7900X and even the 7900X3D. More like the higher the second numbers the more core counts while the first indicating the generation of chip.

    • +10

Bigger number (generally) means more cores. x600 = 6 cores (1 CCD with 2 failed cores), x800 = 8 cores (1 CCD), x900 = 12 cores (2 CCD with 2 failed cores each), x950 = 16 cores (2 CCD). x700 are usually lower binned version of x800 for a discount (5800X -> 5700X, 5800X3D -> 5700X3D). X3D = 3D V-Cache model stemming from server chip design with a huge L3 cache stacked on top of the CCDs. G = APU (laptop chips repackaged for desktop). X = better binned slightly higher performance model with higher stock clock (and in the case of the 7000 series, no stock cooler)

The crapshoot are the later releases. 5500 is a 5600G with a defective iGPU. 5700 is a 5700G with a defective iGPU. However, the 5700 name implies its faster than the 5600 and 5600X, which it is not, but it is also not wrong because the 5700(G) is a 8C CPU and thus has a higher model number than the 5600 with 6C. From the naming scheme it also implies its a cut down 5700X rather than a 5700G, but the issue lies with the 5700X which should have just been a 5800.

        Thanks, great to know.

"The world's fastest gaming desktop processor" - I mean no, but also no.

    • +7

it was at time of launch I believe,

pretty insane how this can compete quite well with the 7900x3d and 14900k, let alone power consumption/temps given
