Is this the sapphire glass version?

      • +7

Actually the Titanium versions, like the one OP posted, do have Sapphire glass. Your link is the Pro version which also has Sapphire glass and comes in 42mm, 47mm and 51mm versions as well as has a flashlight, more storage and some other things.

        • I see, my mistake, thanks for the correction, love Garmin marketing, they make so many models but don't always spruik sapphire in the name like they do with some of their models.

          • @sobriety22: It's crazy that there is like 20 models of the Epix Gen 2. No wonder they have such crazy RRP, the manufactoring costs of that many models must be crazy, LOL.

        • Can confirm, model I picked up has sapphire printed on the box.

That’s even a bigger bonus than first thought, so was originally looking a sapphire Fenix 7 which can’t be had for much less than $1000

@NotSureIfSerious: Yeah, this looks like a really feature packed watch with a great price. I would love to get one but I can't wear a watch at work and my Forerunner 235 does all I need for tracking runs so I keep holding out.

          • @NotSureIfSerious: So the box is coated with Sapphire?
Wow no wonder these rrp prices

Literally stopped wearing my IWC Christmas Day after my wife got me this watch, it is remarkable - for exercise, steps and sleep… Battery literally lasts 10-14 days (variable being how often you track GPS activities). It seems Garmin have struck a really neat balance of "excess tracking" and "utility effort". Highly recommend ⌚

    • A smart-watch will potentially save your life. I can't think of a more loving gift than this.

    • Saying you’ll drop the IWC for a garmin makes it sound they’re comparable. They’re not.

Both are very different type of watches. No one is wearing an IWC for functionality.

Makes more sense if you said you stopped using an apple watch after you got given a garmin.

  • Maybe it is all in my head, although bulky, but it wears nicely and is not too heavy. I think the silicone straps can be a bit annoying at times, especially when typing on a Mac. The metal clip keeps scratching the metal surface. I got a Velcro strap instead, which works great.

    • Do you have an iPhone? if so does this receive calls and is able to ping the phone when lost?

The only gripe I have with any of these wearables is that the smart watches don't read through tattoos but I've put up with it on my series 4..

      • If you want a proper smartwatch then a Garmin isnt for you as they make watches for you to use to track fitness and outdoor activities with the key being decent or good battery life (think of them more as fitness/activity trackers with a watch and it would then make sense) with any smartwatch feature being the secondary point of them.

On the same ilk, an Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch is a smartwatch first, fitness tracker second and the battery life makes that very clear.

        • Not to sound rude but I already know that. The only functions I use on my Apple watch is the ecg, calls and the ability to leave my phone at home when I'm at the gym or running (fitness tracking).

And I agree the battery life on my apple watch is pretty rough lately and I have never liked the square'ish shape.

The android watches just don't pair well with ios devices and is the only issue I haven't jumped ship.

          • +1

@Bap1337: Dont sweat about being rude as I wrongly assumed you didnt know!

In saying that, its always the same issue with smartwatches anyway in that you never use an Apple Watch if you're on Android and vice-versa. Garmin's app is good enough for the watch (there's arguments for its crappy UI and UX but im not going there) but you do need the app to basically operate the watch and view stats from it. The app is also needed if you need to ping your phone from the watch as the functionality is only on the app but at least on iOS, Garmin's app will talk to Apple Health and sync across your stats (in Android, it doesnt work unless you buy a separate app so you are limited to using Garmin's app if you want to view fitness stats from the watch or you go on the Connect website).

      • To answer your question.
Yes you can 'find my phone' using the watch but only if your phone is within Bluetooth range.
It will alert you to calls but you will need to listen and speak through your phone (at least for the other Garmin watches I've tried).
It does work better for android because you can choose which apps will show on the watch. With iPhone you can have all notification on the watch or none (again based on late last year not sure if they have sorted this out yet).
        Not sure about tattoos though.

  • Amazing battery life, I get 15+ days.

    • with AOD?

waiting for the sapphire titanium 51mm gen 2 pro to go on special …one day…

  • This is the best watch! Best bang for buck anyway.

Not having to worry about charging constantly or scratching/smashing the screen makes it a no brainer over an apple watch.

  • Anyone know do you still get the staff (SRG) discount on top of the already discounted price ?

    • You don't

  • Been getting back into running and gym is this worth getting over something like the Garmin forerunner 265? Or not worth if I'm not using the other features?

    • +3

If you're "getting back' into fitness, a 265 (or 255 which is regularly on special for $449ish) would be perfect for you.

      • +2

        265 = AMOLED … 255 = MIP

    • +1

I prefer 265 for (1) lighter feel and (2) without the sharp metal edges on the case and (3) $250 cheaper at $650 (just google and go to Rebel to price match).

Epix has 100m WR also vs 265 with 50m WR.

    • +1

Check out the amazfit balance…that is also a hidden gem of a watch.

    • the 265 is fine. there would be basically no benefit

  • If you use an iPhone, according the YT, the quantified scientist, apple watches are consistently most accurate with HR.
If using an android then I would get a Garmin

    • The most accurate way to get HR is to wear a chest strap, which a Garmin (and Apple watch) can pair with. This is if you are doing serious training and events. If you just want your HR while doing day to day activities and run the Apple ecosystem, the Apple watch will be best for you.

      • Agree with this ^.

I love my Epix 2, but at the gym my Polar H10 does the HR.

  • +1

I have the cheaper version of this watch, non-titanium one. Pretty good watch, I’d pick it over Apple Watch anyday.

  • +1

it was $765 at JB HiFi with the random 10% off for perks members.

  • Got $849 gift cards for Rebel for $764 (10% off) through Reward Gateway + getting ~$42 Rebel reward credit to my account = ~$722.
    Not bad.

  • much difference to the PRO besides the price?

    • Pro has the newer sensors and a flashlight built in. They were the main differences I believer.
As for how much the new sensors are I’m not sure.

      • Main differences are flashlight, new heart rate sensor (v5 vs v4) and the pro comes in a choice of 3 sizes (42mm, 49mm 51mm) whereas the standard Epix gen 2 only comes in 47mm

Each size of the Epix pro has different battery capacities as well so expect the big 51mm version to have double the battery life of the 47/49mm Epix and pro

      • Apparently the pro version has sensor hardware to support ECG when the software upgrades come out in the future. So I hear.

  • Does anyone have recent experience with ultimate gift cards and rebel via 20x FB points at coles? It looks as though rebel is being phased off these

  • Will write something for people considering moving from Apple to Garmin.

I had apple watches from the 2, 3, 8 and although they did everything I needed they always lacked when tracking multiple sports.

If you also care about answering calls, messages and doing stuff without a phone then apple watch is for you. I didn't really care for that stuff and while it had all these cool apps and things it could do, i would only use it to track workouts.

Me, I needed a watch to do multiple sports (golf, running, cycling, HIIT, weightlifting, hiking etc) and the Garmin excels at that. Its also made with stronger materials and looks more like a normal watch and not a calculator watch.

Do your own research because at 800-1000 its a lot of money to spend but its a hell of a tool if your trying to better yourself.

    • +1

I’m the same. I swapped from AW7 to this and so far I love it. I didnt use all the fancy things of the AW, but I wanted better tracking for sports, running and something that looks more like a watch!

Other thing is the extra accessories, I’m going to get a Garmin HR monitor to monitor my runs.
Also, the 2 week battery life vs 12 hour battery life of the AW was a big win.

  • Just a note the Rebel site only allows a maximum of 3 gift cards applied to an order. I could only buy gift cards from NRMA in $200 max groups so now I have $250 that I need to find a use for.

    • Even in store?

      • Not sure about in store because stock looks scarce around me in VIC. I only tried online / delivery.

  • Can't decide between this or wait for the sale on FR965. I have AW7 and currently training for my second marathon. I cross train on the bike once a week too. Although the use of the workoutdoors app has been great, the battery on the AW7 is lacking now.

I also wear it for sleep so kinda leaning towards the FR965 as i feel the Epix or even the fenix would be too bulky/cumbersome when going to sleep.

  • Just got the White one for 699 on sale at rebel sport.
