  • How does this compare with a Kitchen Aid, in the market for a stand mixer and have trouble deciding.

      • +2

TL;DR: …so when it comes down to our hands-on assessments, the KitchenAid is a clear winner.

    • They both seem to be very overpriced.

      • I got KA for less than half price and I feel I'd be fine with a Kenwood.

        • +1

I bought a Kenwood because Choice rated that model slightly higher than the equivalent KitchenAid, and it was a bit cheaper too. I use it about every four or five days for bread dough which is a workout, plus the occasional cake. It is now six years old and so far no problems.

      • Tell me you don't bake without telling me you don't bake.

        • I assume you bake a lot, esp. low hydration breads etc. that are tough to knead - as opposed to a sweet spongy cakes which are not demanding to any appliance - and know what you're saying, but seriously Kenwood seems better value - renowned, established brand with long warranty and parts readily available, even though it's not KitchenAid.

          • @pizzaguy: Yeah I do bake a lot. and yes easy sweet spongy cakes too, why have another appliance if I already have this. heavily used for 10 years and still going strong. I spent a lot time doing research before I actually bough one.

I also use it to whisk, grind, mince, slice, make sausages and pasta.

@pitufon: That's some proper bang for the buck and surely money well spent. Good on you.

Kitchenaid wins easily over the Smeg.

Ignore the higher price point, the difference will be amortised over the decades you have the thing.

Technicians all know how to repair them. They’re robust. Plenty of accessories (plus I’ve been told the knockoff accessories on Aliexpress are decent)

That being said I’ve heard that Breville make a good stand mixer, but if it’s purely Kitchenaid vs Smeg that you’re looking at, the Kitchenaid curbstomps the Smeg.

I’ve recently moved into a new place that’s been kitted out with Smeg appliances. They look nice but performance has been very unsatisfactory. Oven is materially inaccurate, dishwasher spray arms don’t get up into tall glasses, induction stove top cycles power instead of regulating the output. I wish they’d put Series 6 Bosch in instead as the appliances were the same price.

"They look nice but performance has been very unsatisfactory"

That's quite common with a lot of Smeg products, sadly.

        • I can’t believe that people actually pay money for Smeg appliances. They were forced on us as part of our build, but when I look up the RRP it’s the same price as quality Bosch.

I’m assuming that Smeg has done a deal with volume builders and the appliances they put in new homes is a built-to-price, low quality rebadged line. The stuff feels as flimsy and budget as the Technika Bellismo junk I had in my first place.

      • Yes, for things like ovens the Germans have it over the Italians. Miele then Bosch on reliability.

Not sure where AEG or Asko fit in, but they are very expensive.

  • Black shows 799

  • Hrm, I have SMEG stuff in my kitchen.

    Gas stove is great
Dishwasher is a pile of p00.
    Rangehood died before installation.

    I don't think i'll take the risk,

    • +1

Thanks for the assessment, it gave me a laugh.

    • I also had a dud smeg ranehood.

    • Yeah my Smeg dishwasher was absolute trash. I replaced it with a Bosch and its been night-and-day

  • OOS

  • I had a look at the Smeg Kettles on the weekend. I was suprised at how budget it felt. Ie. Hearing little creaks and rattles when you hold the handle.

    Doesn't feel like a $260 kettle.

    • That's because it's not. There's no difference between that kettle and a kmart one except the price.

  • KA any day of the week

SMEG is a trash brand that posh twats think is good because its expensive (ye know, like all the other expensive shit posh twats buy)

  • You can easily get a high quality second hand Kenwood on marketplace for like $50-$100. Kenwood are much better than KitchenAid. Stronger motor, more durable etc. They just look ugly.

SMEG is for for either housewives in Mosman to show off to their friends how their entire kitchen is on brand OR for poor people who think it's what rich people have, like LV etc.

It's expensive crap. I've had several of their appliances in rented properties and they are laughable in quality and functionality compared to other brands, which also have the added benefit of not having a disgusting name like smeg.

    • +1

I have had nothing but poor experiences with Smeg, it's staggering how so many people still seem to think of them as some sort of status symbol when their build quality and performance is so horrendous

Came for the Red Dwarf comments … sad.

"smoke me a kipper i'll be back for breakfast"

    • Im sure Kryton would have a mixer attachment.

  • Do you think these will fit on it? link1 link 2 or do you think it will look weird?

Arrived today. Doesn't seem as bad as some of the comments have said.
Maybe warranty will be worth its weight in gold.
