Recommended Cheap Monitors for a Mac - Budget $200- $400

Can anyone recommend any monitors that's decent or one that frequently goes on discounts?

I was thinking a 1440p monitor would be fine, but I heard that Mac's scaling is really bad unless the monitor is 4k. If possible, a 1440p/high refresh rate monitor would be good with a type c connection. Feel free to recommend some cheap 4k monitors as well, Budget is around $200-$400.

Colours don't have to be accurate, I just really need a monitor for programming at home.

  • 1440p looks fine, IMO. 4K is a noticeable improvement though.

I am using two 27" 1440p monitors with my MBP and PC.

I also have a Dell S2721QS which I would not recommend. There were issues with refresh rate with my configuration.

I also found out that rtings has a section on Mac compatibility. That would be worth checking for whichever monitor you are considering.

    • 1440p does funky things to text with a Mac due to no native hidpi at that res. Have you successfully gotten around that?

      • Running defaults - could be my distance from the monitor. I believe there are some utilities or command you can run to improve the display, but haven't bothered - I briefly looked into this when running a 24" monitor.

As I say 4k is a noticeable improvement(running scaled), though, not enough for me to bother changing.

      • BetterDisplay app: this is the way.

        • I had it working, but then it stopped working. I can't figure out how to get it to work again :(

          • @Morien: I remember vaguely having problems, uninstalled and reinstalled (install "appcleaner" it runs in background and prompts you to delete an apps settings when you uninstall, uninstalling = simply deleting app from 'Applications' folder) and it's been fine since

    • Yeah thanks for the rtings site, will take a look on what's good and is within my budget.

  • 4K is very useful for coding, no 2nd display needed. But $400 will be very limiting.

If you can scrape together $499, this looks great:

    Dell Ultrasharp U3219Q 32" IPS LED 4K UHD Monitor 3840 x 2160 HDMI DP USB C USB 3 Hub - New, Opened

or see their eBay site. Probably comes with Dell warranty, however much of 3 years is left.

P.S. How hard can it be to tweak MacOS for 1440p? Macbooks have similar resolution.

  • Depending on where you are LG 32UR500 31.5" 4K UHD VA HDR Monitor $249 could be an ok option. Otherwise, you could follow that tag and wait dor something to come up in your price range

  • I found this video helpful in understanding the scaling etc. Hope this is helpful for others.

  • I'd go for 4k - push your budget if you need to or wait for a deal. I've used 1440p on a mac and it's terrible.
