New car now comes with DLC too

    • What is "DLC"?

      • Downloadable Content, mostly use in games

  • +33

yeah no, screw paying for maps. who even uses clunky mazda ui over carplay or google maps on their phones?

    • +17

That map updates aren't included free in any dealer service, at least during warranty, should be a crime.

      • +3

I recently had a map update on a Hyundai 2016 free. Wasn't part of the service just went in and asked

        • +1

I update my i30 maps via an application completely free.
Disgusting that these dealers charge such high prices for map updates.

          • @Gazza-75: I would if I had the model a few months newer with carplay/androidauto

            • @brocky2006: Good to hear the dealership updated your maps for free at least. Mine's a 2017 so I must have just got the functionality with the new model.

            • @brocky2006: The usb unit can be retrofitted, about $120 for the unit, took me about 2hours to install with YouTube instructions

              • @Nomoneynotalk: If I just get the head unit with carplay etc and swap it out?

I wasn't sure that would work, there is a wreckers nearby that has a Santa fe head with that function

                • @brocky2006: Just the usb part, something like this https://amzn.asia/d/4DQiRll . I got the wireless version but it’s a pain as it can’t do wired without pulling the entire unit out to change the dip switch. It also interferes with the DAB reception. I recommend the wired only version for stability

                • @brocky2006: I kept the original head unit for easy of install and steering wheel control compatible. Mazda sells the oem kits too, I think it’s around the $280 mark. I got the cheap copy.

                  • @Nomoneynotalk: Mine doesnt have any functionality of it so far. The ones with it have a special button for it. Unless that unit of yours can still work with it

                    • @brocky2006: Sorry, I’ve misread and assumed you have a Mazda with an older head unit. The usb device is to upgrade the older MZD.

Even at 99% off it’s hard to justify when Google/Apple Maps and Waze are free

    • +7

not only are they free, they offer real time updates, which is almost the only time I ever use Maps (during heavy traffic to find the best way home). I'd only use it if they had a feature similar to that which will never happen.

  • +7

Yeaaaaaahhh nahhhhh android auto or apple car play and google maps all the way

  • +4

all new mazda should have Android auto or carplay available now. This will be only for really old cars without it. No one in their right mind would pay for expensive maps when they can access google or apple ecosystem.

  • +5

    Cheaper getting the CarPlay attachment

  • +2

They oftenly gave 20% max discount. Still not enough for me to jump in. If the final cost less than $100, I might

  • +7

i'd rather strap vision pro to my face while driving than use this map

  • +1

Get a good magsafe mount for 1/4 the price. Waze all the way with live updates.

    • and police positions

  • +1

    You have 4 better choice.

If you have current Mazda with AA and cp, just use that thing.

If you have older mzd connect just upgrade it so it can use AA and cp.

If you have super old Mazda, just buy Android base head unit.

Or if you true Oz bargainer just buy phone cradles.

    • -1

      You forgot one choice.

Get a vintage UBD Street Map. Don't need to rely on a data connection, or any electronics!

      • OzPrehistoricBargain

    • Older Mazdas can also use the Mazda Tweak mods to install AA without a head unit upgrade

    • Thanks Anubizz, I’ll let the chauffeur know.

  • +3

No one seemed to have post the price, here goes:

    3 YEAR MAP UPDATE SUBSCRIPTION:

    216.50 USD

    SINGLE TIME UPDATE:

    124.29 USD

    And 20% off

    • +9

Wow, expensive. I'd like to tell them where to go (and they won't need a map!)

      • Wow, cheap. Last time I checked for my old Toyota a single update (DVD) was around $400.

  • +4

If you have a VW you go to their website, download it and install it yourself. Not sure why Mazda and Toyota want your kidney, your first born and your inheritance when you pass away for something that is baseline these days.

And let's be honest, Waze on AA or CarPlay is a far better option - given how much they bend you on servicing, surely something as part of your product buy should be free!

    • "If you have a VW you go to their website, download it and install it yourself."

have a question. if so, do they update it for you for free during service then? I mean they must plug something in anyway right to check the engine or something so I thought they would just have a auto update process.

"Not sure why Mazda and Toyota want your kidney, your first born and your inheritance when you pass away for something that is baseline these days."

I swear it's getting worse and worse. ever since so many people have so many subscriptions and no problem "forgetting to cancel" a few. subscriptions are just going crazy. first it was Netflix upping sub prices multiple times, then everyone else followed. now multiple streaming services are injecting ads into base tier (paid) subs and all of them are going to be doing it soon. so now they have BMW heated seats you have to pay a subscription for, and now this? update maps in your car for a subscription fee? I swear I have some more random examples I can't think of right now but when is it going to stop.

what's next? base tier car maps sub is going to have ads showing up you have to engage with while you are parked.

  • I think the code should for to Pay only 20% of a ridiculous/arbitrary price, and that's really only applicable to older cars that have no other means (Android/Apple).

  • +1

Can't speak for Mazda. Used Kia navigation once when we bought a new car in 2022, have not used it since. Absolute rubbish.

    • +1

Don't worry mazda is just as bad. I have 2022 mazda 3 and used it once when I bought it and never again.

    • Yeah I don't know what they expect in Korea but I found that whole user interface a nightmare. And not being able to enter a suburb without an actual street address - WTF is with that?

  • Got the carplay/AA upgrade for my older Mazda with MZD, much better option than paying for the map update.

    • It was around $350 to upgrade wasn't it ?

      • I paid $495 including installation back in Nov 2018.

    • Can I ask how much did it cost and did you do at authorized dealer or somewhere else?
Edit - Official RRP is $514.46 as per https://www.mazda.com.au/owners/help-and-support/apple-carpl…

      • $495 inc installation at Max Kirwan Mazda back in 2018. I guess it's gone up due to inflation and what not.

Very happy with it, integration with the centre console dial is great and you can easily toggle between MZD and Carplay/AA just by holding the home button.
If you are running Google Maps or music through Carplay and want to look at something on MZD, pressing the music or maps button on the centre console dial will know to toggle back to Carplay view.

  • Map updates are usually released biannually, and as a Mazda owner, you’re entitled to three years complimentary support from MapCare.
The current MZD Connect Map update is Q4 2020 (released July 2021).

  • +1

    Waze is free

  • No worse than charging a subscription to use your already installed seat heaters.

  • With the number of new roads and our ever changing landscape, easier purchase an AA/Carplay unit and be done with it

  • 3 years of map update for Porsche is free.

  • I have Mazda cx3 yes I can use google map on iPhone and cable to the car (carplay) but the map only shown on the main display of navigation screen, not on the small transparent screen Infront of steering wheel. Is this normal?

    • Yes

      • okay i was scratching my head how to bring that map to the small screen haha ah remember the name is active driving display
