Since UG802 is pretty popular amongst fellow ozbargainers, and decided to post this price drop.

For those of you who are not familiar with the concept, this is a mini Android computer that you can connect directly to your TV and use it with wireless keyboard/mouse.

Blurb from MP4Nation definition:
"The UG802 Android TV stick is a simple plug and play device that converts your TV into a full blown Android computer. The stick connects to your TV via HDMI and is powered by a external power charger, users can also use USB wired and wireless mouse and keyboards with the UG802.

The UG802 processor is very good for video playback making the MK802 ideal for media playing and streaming.

  • +1 for Mp4nation, btw not really familiar with this android player, is this one good to start with?

  • im waiting for the UG808 to go on sale

  • sorry, yes I meant the mk808

  • How does this compare to my WD TV Live (newest model) that I have at the moment? Would this be a better investment?

    • +9

Would this be a better investment?

No, shares and property would be better.

"No, shares and property would be better"

And here I was just about to invest in the 'JV's school of witty replies and sarcastic posts".
They flyer said it would make me more successful and more popular..

          Are you being sarcastic?

        • Wrong term, but anyway, thanks for the helpful answer guys.
If anyone would care to answer instead of voting up jv's comment it would be greatly appreciated.

MK808 is a better unit than this. This UG802 has got some several know problems.

Also, another Chinese factory is going to release a simillar one with a Quad Core processor in it in early November.

To answer your question, I personally think that these units are going to take over the Media Centre and HTPC market. WD has got very limited functionality whereas these units powered by Android got a great flexibility to install new apps from the GooglePlay.

    • This is not even comparable. I have both, the UG802 is something to tinker with and I might get it working to my satisfaction at some point. The WD Live is more of an appliance that just works, has a proper remote etc. I don't think I'd use the UG802 as my primary viewing device.

  • Has anyone tried to use on of these with ABC iView?

    • it should work via a browser, they don't seem to have an Android app…

  • Mk808 is better. These have wifi and heating issues.

    • UG007 has similar specs as Mk808 with the addition of Bluetooth so gives you more options for mouse/keyboard and other devices.

      • Interesting. Wonder if the power supply will be up to the job? BT is a welcome addition.

    • Haha just looked at some comments online about these devices. Apparently massive problems with wifi and audio/video sync. Definitely would not buy until there are some solid products available. Back to the drawing board (product testing) guys.

      • I'd guess it's the software as it isn't mature.

        • Its not the software, its the design of the case not having the correct vents, and the antenna is not adequate. Was probably tested without the case.

The other issues are the power supply is not enough at 1A.

    • I fixed the wifi by opening the case and dangling the antenna wire outside the case. All good now. I had to use the edge of a file to cut a slot in the case to put the wire thru so i could close the case. Mine doesnt have any heating issues, and my missus is forever playing games with it, if it did i would probably just leave the casing removed.

  • It's good and all, but will it works with my Cobolt 17" analog TV ?

    • It needs a TV with a HDMI input.

Maybe you should consider a different computer, like the Raspberry Pi.

The Raspberry Pi, as well as HDMI out, has composite video and analog audio outputs. Perfect for your analog TV.

Many operating systems have been ported to the Raspberry Pi, including Android 4 and XBMC.

It is also cheaper than this deal, but it doesn't have onboard WiFi, if that's a problem. It DOES have onboard 100Mbit ethernet, though, which is probably preferred if you want to use it as a media center.

The Raspberry Pi is more of a hacker's machine, though. You'll have to "get your hands dirty" - but only a little bit. There are plenty of walkthroughs on YouTube for doing most things.

      • If your using it for a media centre definitely go the raspberry pi. Buy a case and a mini usb cable and a cheap 4gb sd card and its easy to set up raspbmc (xbmc for raspberry) or openelec (xbmc again) with all the online tutorials. D

Don't bother with the UG802 with its audio/video sync issues and wifi issues (opening the case and making holes to run the antenna out should hardly be called a solution).

In my opinion, something should work out of the box, you shouldn't need to install different firmware or open up cases to get it to work. For info I bought three of these and they are not worth the hassle.

  • just to let people know, i bought one of these and a box turned up with no actual android device in it at all.

    • Who was the seller?

    • If that happened with MP4Nation, immediately contact them and they should send you a new one. Their customer service is great.
