This one is very artificial, better to buy the Lee Kum Kee Premium Soy Sauce. I know this is cheap, but Premium is not much more from Asian groceries or from Costco everyday.

    Lee Kum Kee Premium ingredients
Water, Soybeans (17.5%), Salt, Sugar, Wheat Flour. Contains Soy, Wheat, Gluten.

    Lee Kum Kee Gold ingredients
Water, Salt, Soybeans (9%), Flavour Enhancer (621, 631, 627), Wheat, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Colour (150a), Preservative (202), Sweetener (955). Contains Soybeans, Wheat.

If you do a side by side smell. You can smell that Premium has a nice fermented umami scent, whilst Gold smells like it was made in a plastic factory.

    • Any bargain on premium sauce?

      • +6

I think Costco sells Premium for about $7.50 every day price. Probably around $8 to $9 in Asian groceries. Gold isn’t really half price, it is really what it is worth.

@HolyCr4p: give him a break bro

@WatchNerd: I agree normally, but it isnt a deal, hes just giving advice in the comments

          • +6

@HolyCr4p: Costco isn’t jacking up the RRP, then giving a discount to create a false sense of a bargain. The everyday price at Costco is already a bargain.

        • Ate you sure 7.50 is everyday price not special sale from lee kum kee? I heard lee kum kee is clearing stock only this moment, never see this low as I using premium for 20+ years.

    • +2

This is a good price. I use both and my silly wife can't tell the difference between gold kum and premium kum. Though I agree the latter definitely is better on the nose.

    • Thanks, just the information I was looking for. Mrs buys the from aldi and I'm certain it's the nasty stuff.

    • +1

Even Lee Kum Kee Premium is sub-standard if you want soy sauce from a large supermarket.
By far, the best at Woolworths, for both taste and price is the Pearl River Bridge Premium Mushroom Soy
      https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/98446/pear…
Water 34%, Soybeans 24%, Sugar, Salt, Wheat Flour, Extract of Mushroom

THIS IS THE SQUID INK FROM A GIANT SQUID FROM ANCIENT TIMES.

I highly rate this as auMouth states.

        There is no going back.

Use sparingly, it is some crazy inkpot black type soy.

        Be careful.

I might have to stock up on it now a word got out.

A few bottles should last many years

        Crazy Soy sauce. Be warned

        • Allergen Sulphur Dioxide but not mentioned in the ingredients on the woolies website

      • This stuff is great but it's dark soy sauce, totally different category. Many recipes will call for both, or specifically just light or just dark. Recommend having both in the pantry.

    • Weird, the premium is $8.30 on the woolworths website as a "regular" price. The gold is marked down from $12 to this price.

All that extra crap apparently costs more.

  • Can't find in store.

    • usually back isle on the promotion section

    • It's in the Asian section.

Nasty stuff… No need for MSG in the real stuff

    • have you got a recommendation?

    Knorr Viandox.

    If you know, you know.

Coles Asia soy sauce is $6.50 for 1.9L, if you want something that's cheap and not packed with tons of artificial crap.

    Ingredients
Water, Defatted Soy Beans (22%), Wheat, Salt.

But then you'd have to give money to Coles…..

    • +2

Never heard the word "defatted" before. What's that mean?

      • +3

        Fat removed?

        E: found this

Mass produced soy sauce is made from defatted soy residue (soy from which the oil has been extracted), which makes the soy sauce ferment a lot faster than using the whole bean. Purists argue that this also leads to a loss of flavor and body.

        • +10

I wonder if that changes deflavour.

  • coles brand soy sauce is great one, no matter dark or plain one(light) one.

    • +3

Dark is for color only. The favour of dark is more light. The light one is light for color but more salty. But as from Asia, local soy bean brand such as Lee kum kee, or pearl river bridge, Haday is better choice :-)

      • I just had to repeat what I said above about the Pearl River Bridge Mushroom type.

Only 1/2 way through my second bottle.

A few bottles should last many thousands of years shelf life.

        Crazy Soy sauce. Be warned

Asian cusine applied different soy sauce for various purpose.

Lee kum kee, or pearl river bridge was original from south of China(Catonese cusine). While north china cusine is bit different. Only applied soy sauce(not sub-catologue ligth or dark) traditionally.

  • Are non-Chinese soy sauces vastly different to Chinese ones in taste and quality? Which brands and lines are best to look for, apart from Pearl River Bridge and LKK?

    • +1
      1. Join Dim Sims 4 Lyfe facebook group
      2. Post how you think LKK is the best soy sauce available
      3. Receive 50 angrily worded recommendations on better soy sauces in around 3 minutes

    • The taste can be much different, like some Japanese soy sauce is tasted much lighter, good for instant consuming but not for cooking.

    • it depends which cusine are you going to cook, local brewed soy sauce would be benefit local cusine somehow.

However, it can be replacable if one person not familiar with loca cusine.

    • Japanese soy sauce is lighter. If you want to know the taste before you buy, you can mix Chinese soy sauce with a little water and sugar.

Try Hayday soy sauce. I think this brand tastes better.

  • Please, Kikkoman is where it's at yeah?
