  • I remember reading that the 8000 series intel chips were better for running Plex for some reason, does anyone know anything about this ?

"The Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake, Whiskey Lake and Comet Lake microarchitectures implementation adds full fixed-function H.265/HEVC 10-bit 4:2:0 decoding and encoding acceleration, and full fixed-function VP9 8-bit and 10-bit decoding acceleration and 8-bit encoding acceleration

You can read about HW acceleration in Plex on https://support.plex.tv/articles/115002178853-using-hardware….

Earlier generations of hardware typically have lower-quality output than newer generations. (For instance, output from a “Sandy Bridge” Intel processor typically won’t look as good as from a “Kaby Lake” processor.)

Note that the CPU generation won't matter too much if you are using a discrete GPU.

        looks like chatGPT drivel

        • +2

          Even worse, jv drivel.

      • +2

        Ha, useless.

    • they have better intel quicksync than earlier generations, but as @scrimshaw says, if you're using a discrete GPU it's a non-starter

      • Non-issue I meant, usually 7500 and above good for quick sync Plex transcoding

What power supply do these come with?

    • IEC cable

    • +5

One that generates enough power for it to be able to power this powerful computer powerfully.

      • Which one?

Dell had a few different ones…

        • +8

One of them. Specifically, not the ones which it isn't.

    • I run one of these on my work desk right now. It has a builtin PSU not an external.
The 3080 I also run has an external brick as it's a SSFF

      • I have a GTX 1650 card and want to see if there is enough power to run it.

        • I would say no. there is a power connection inside for a SATA disk but doubt there is capacity to run a GPU long term.

          • @w0mbat: My current Dell 9020 SFF can run it.

            • +2

@jv: 200W PSU so yes should be able to support the 75W for the 1650! exactly the same as your doing it now! I have the same setup wondering if worth upgrading, was going to wait til they were close to $200, but this is good!

              • +1

@Unbreakable: The 9020 has a 250w PSU, the 7060 is only 200w… I looked into a it a while back to see if I could throw my 1050Ti into a 7060, it seemed very iffy, I couldn't find a conclusive answer, I wasn't game to take the gamble…

From memory the 7060 can only handle a 50W GPU, the 1050TI needs 75W… I'm fairly sure the 1650 is much the same as the 1050Ti…

                • @FLICKIT:

From memory the 7060 can only handle a 50W GPU

                  😔

I'm fairly sure the 1650 is much the same as the 1050Ti…

                  Yes, 75W

                • @FLICKIT: I wonder if i can swap over the power supply from my 9020 to the 7060 ?

        • It depends. If the GPU has a plug for a PSU to connect to it, then probably not.

If it gets all the power it needs from the PCIe slot (i.e. it doesn't have space for a PSU to connect), then the chances are good.

  • The towers of these use a normal ATX power supply, no OEM power supply. Might be lucky but there is no way an ATX will fit inside.

  • Any optical drive on this one?

    • +1

      No optical Drive. Thanks

    In 2024, a i7 8700 isn't worth a $110+ premium over a i5 8500 when both are 6 cores.

  • I just sold my elitedesk 800 with 8700 for $200 on marketplace… I guess that buyer got a deal
