2 Nights in Melbourne Central - Where to Stay?

Hi all, looking to spend 2 nights in Melbourne with the mrs, only plan currently is to go to Tenacious D @ Rod Laver.

Can I please get accomm suggestions? Looking to keep under $250/night ideally, $300 only if it's really worth it!

Only ever been to Melbourne one other time, she's never been.

TIA

checked bookings.com, sorting from low to high?

Of course, but sometimes deals hide elsewhere, sometimes hotels appear better than they are, sometimes 3-4 star hotels are nicer than expected, sometimes the location is more suitable than expected… etc etc

      Local knowledge can be handy

    This seems pretty decent

  • OP if you have Accor membership (or free sign up -https://all.accor.com/loyalty-program/cards-status-benefits-details/index.en.shtml)

You could look into these hotels - close to Rod Laver Arena, decent and within your budget.

    • Mantra on Jolimont

Or for a bit more luxury - Pullman Melbourne On The Park

These are based on a 2 night stay from 20 July 2024 and check out at 22 July 2024.

  • AirBNB

  • I've stayed at Novotel on Collins when going to an event at the MCG before. It's not fancy, but it is a clean, comfortable and centrally located hotel (near Southern Cross Station which is good for the SkyBus) that would be an easy ~20 minute walk to Rod Laver Arena. There are also plenty of food/shopping options nearby if that's what you're in to while you're there. Having a quick look shows ~$460 for 2 nights if you sign up for their membership program in July.

Next Melbourne is on the higher end of the scale, but it's very schmick (like you can actually choose what colour room key you want and they have Dyson hairdryers), they don't have a room service fee (well they didn't when I stayed in August), and it's less than 15 minutes walk to Rod Laver.

voco Melbourne Central is good 'cause you can open windows, but I guess you won't need to do that in Winter.

Go to Crown Casino and put a few chairs together to make a bed

Might sound stupid, but depending, you could always stay regional and just catch PT. For only a max of $40 in total ($10 for the both of you times 2 days) it may be worth it depending how cheap you can get accommodation.

    • dont you need to buy mykis these days before u can even travel on PT

      • +2

You can create a digital myki pass in google wallet. No luck for ios though.

Normally stay @ Citadines on Bourke street (executive studio apartment - floors 17-25) when visiting Melbourne.

Use timezone credits and only pay $125, or $150 if it's really worth it!

  • I stay at the Alto. Easy access to trams and Spencer Street, good food options nearby. Beds are super comfy and staff are nice.

  • Crown Promenade is nice. Cost me roughly $300 per night a year or two ago.

True Ozbargainers stay in private rooms at Hostels. Bunch of them available for $100 a night. Often nice and friendly and with common areas and kitchens. https://www.hostelworld.com/pwa/wds/s?q=Melbourne,%20Austral…

  • Will you have a rental car? Parking costs vary widely and may influence your hotel choice. For short leisure stays I've always preferred the retail heart of Melbourne and it's good to see police are increasing their presence to improve safety.

    • Nah not bothering with a hire car due to the length of stay plus checking out the CBD and surrounds

My tip: QT Melbourne @$298 as a member of Priority Guest Rewards

Novotel on Collins St for a centrally located convenient hotel. It’s not cheap and not expensive. Not fancy and not dero. You won’t be blown away but you won’t be hating every second of staying there either.

Question, if I pushed the budget, is it worth it to go to the Langham for $333/night inc breakfast? (Found a promo code).

Hmm reviews seem to say it's pretty outdated for the money

    • its an old hotel. iconic though, but more known for its high teas.

      • Yeah thought so, I know the London one has a stupidly exxy high tea

    • It's a not bad location for the Arena

    • devilishly good price for two nights

    • I love staying at the Langham when I can score a good price. The breakfast is amazing and I love the old world charm. I think you'd definitely enjoy it.
I also love the QT as suggested earlier, it's in a great location and has a cool industrial vibe and an amazing rooftop bar.

  • So just temporarily booked for the Adina Apartments Southbank

$424 for 2 nights with late check-out and 2x coffees, and no pre-payment needed

Still very much open to other ideas though :)

It's architecturally interesting: Australia's first cross-laminated timber (CLT) high-rise hotel and the tallest timber adaptive-reuse project in the country

    • looks like typical airbnb apartment, have you checked airbnb prices?

  • OoooOOOo Melbourne in mid to late July. Literally when most Melburnians are leaving even the AFL goes on holibyes around that time. Stay somewhere warm and dry with easy uber access. The CBD can be a venturi from Southerlies and concrete is cold. Figure out where you wanna go for dinners and drinks etc. My suggestion is Southbank sucks for these for the better part, very Crown and very homogenised. Carlton and fitzroy had some good spots, the city too granted it's been a few years since I've lived there, so doing some research might help on where you want to visit I was very partial to Lui in the Rialto on occasions. If you come from somewhere civilised and warm be prepared for it being colder than expected is all I can suggest. g'luck

  • meriton suites are nice if you can find them on sale/discounted

I like the Ibis Melbourne Central. It's, well, an Ibis… but a new nicely designed one. Great location and the buffet breakfast is amazing. The rooms are comfortable but small (unless you go for one of the more expensive options). Really comfy king size bed with big TV. You can BYO Chromecast. The budget doubles go for around $130/night, but the bathroom area is compact, and the sink is in the room.

  • Crowne Plaza is nice. The Langham if you got the scratch.

  • Brady Jones Hotel.
Really nice rooms, but no car Parking.
Top end of city close to China Town. Pub is next corner bar and Italian restaurant next door.

  • The Essex if no car. It's cheap and in the city.

  • 4 or 5 star can't really go wrong, but the prices of hotels in Melbourne have skyrocketed since COVID. The jasper near victoria market sometimes has some good deals.
