The $200 credit can only be used on the amex travel website, is this correct?

    • +1

Correct and the deal through Amex travel is not that great, you can get better deal elsewhere for flight, accommodation, car rental etc.
It used to be free return domestic flight which is great now not so.

      • Does that amex travel do any price-matching etc?

Say we find a flight cheap on another site, can we get them to match/beat it?

      • I have used the $200 credit quite easily through their website. It basically matches local airline fares although the carry-on only option is usually not available. So, if you fly interstate a few times a year and take checked luggage you should be fine to use with Virgin, Qantas, Jetstar, etc.

        • from what I understand, you cant use their points through the portal for the best value though right? Because I was going to sign up for a card with a $400 travel credit, before realising that I wouldn't be able to use the points for anything other than direct cash back meaning that I couldn't use points and travel credit at the same time.

say I wanted to fly emirates business, and converted my amex points to emirates miles - I wouldn't be able to do this through amex travel portal using the travel credit too I dont think.

@[Deactivated]: Correct - they are two separate systems for bookings.

            • @Ozitravel: that sucks but for anyone else wondering: I was googling about this and found that since you can use the travel credit for hotels too, just book hotel through amex travel to use the discount / voucher, and flights externally with points directly with an airline to take advantage of both systems

      • you can get better deal elsewhere for flight, accommodation, car rental etc.

Not always. I’ve routinely found Virgin flights cheaper through Amex Travel compared to direct, and Amex doesn’t charge card surcharges.

Apply via cashrewards to get extra $130 cashback https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/830214

    • yooo didnht thinkt his was possible. thanks for sharing!

  • Theres one more amex offering 100k qantas or velocity points. That’s actually a good deal

    • +1

Velocity ended yesterday. The qantas one doesn't seem as easy to use as velocity.

  • +1

apply for that one first and then get this one

  • This seems liken good deal! Free $130 from CashRewards + $200 Travel Credit + 30k points to transfer to Velocity or Qantas. Very attempted

Also I am about to to meet the minimum 18 months of Amex Qantas deals gruhhhh

    • How do you get the 30k points?

      • Use the referral systems above

        • Can you stack CR with a referral code tho?

        • could you give more information on this? it says 40k points for business explorer?

          • +1

@Thranrond: You have to expand the referral list then find the right card. Wrong card will give you 0 point.

Correct Name: American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card

        • +2

30k points is for the referrer? Not referee

          • @cain09: how do you click through and SB and put in a referral code?

            • @Thranrond: Don't know why you need a referral code, to me you get the same deal with or without the code. The 30k points is to the person referring you if you want to put a code in. That's how i read it anywyay.

        • I have a Platinum Edge card, and the referral bonus showing in my Amex account is 15,000 points which goes to the person that is referring you i.e. not to the person applying for the new card.

    • What's the exchange rate for points transfer to Qantas?

      • -1

        2 Amex to 1 QF

      • +1

you cannot transfer to Qantas from this card, the cards can do are Platinum or above

  • This card does not transfer to qantas. Virgin, Singapore, Cathay, Qatar,I Believe

    • +1

According to Amex Site directly, "Including Virgin Australia Velocity Frequent Flyer, Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Air New Zealand AirpointsTM , THAI Royal Orchid Plus, Malaysia Airlines Enrich, Cathay Pacific Asia MilesTM, Hawaiian Miles and Qatar Avios Privilege Club" as transfer partners.

    • I think it's actually better to use one of the other frequent flyer programs than Qantas as some of the points required are much less and a lot of other programs like Cathay and Singapore offer better availability in the premium cabins (Where the value is)

    • Points transfer rates are:
Velocity Frequent Flyer 2 Membership Rewards points = 1 Velocity Point
Emirates Skywards 3 Membership Rewards points = 1 Skywards mile
Etihad Guest 2 Membership Reward points = 1 Etihad Guest mile
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club 2 Membership Rewards points = 1 Virgin point
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer 3 Membership Rewards points = 1 KrisFlyer mile
Air New Zealand Airpoints 200 Membership Rewards points = 1 Airpoints Dollar
THAI Royal Orchid Plus 2 Membership Rewards points = 1 Royal Orchid Plus mile
Malaysia Airlines Enrich 2 Membership Rewards points = 1 Enrich mile
Hawaiian Miles 2 Membership Rewards points = 1 HawaiianMiles
Qatar Avios Privilege Club 2 Membership Rewards points = 1 Avios
Cathay Pacific Asia Miles 2 Membership Rewards points = 1 Asia Mile

Those airlines cover almost any flight you will want to take. You can get up to 1.5 ff points per dollar spent if you go to the supermarket when they sell the discounted visa gift cards and buy up for all your spend. This will give you effectively the highest earn rate on the market for a free card.
Even if you want to fly Qantas, you can use Cathay Asia miles to book the ticket.

  • I am thinking to a credit card witch is the best for travelling and found Amex cards all charging for foreign transactions. Anyone has any suggestion/guide on this?
The only good one could find is Bankwest Platinum with $0 annual fee and no foreign transaction fee but not sure if I am missing on any other features offered by competitors such as Amex
    https://www.bankwest.com.au/personal/credit-cards/no-annual-…

  • What supermarkets included? Some of the niche supermarkets like Tong Li don’t count towards as supermarket

  • +1

The following merchants have been classified as major supermarkets: Bi-Lo, Coles, Fishers, Food For Less, Fresh Provisions, Harris Farm Markets, IGA, Macro Wholefoods, Safeway, Supabarn, Thomas Dux, Woolworths.
The following merchants have been classified as major petrol stations: Ampol, BP, Caltex Woolworths, Gull, Metro, Peak, Safeway Petrol, Shell, United, Woolworths Petrol, 7 Eleven.
Exceptions may apply if an individual merchant trading as one of the above named retailers does not accept American Express as a form of payment.

  • I havent had an AMEX credit card before. If I apply for this one, will i still be eligble to recieve bonus points on offers on their bigger cards like the Explorer?

    • No. Get the bigger card first.

  • No, you can only get bonus points once every 18 mos. If you want the bonus, you are better off getting one of the more high end cards.

  • can a kind soul point me to the site to check flight prices where this travel credit is accepted? i'd like to check how much those $200 travel credit is really worth before i jump into this.

  • It can be used for anything that can be booked on Amex travel. www.americanexpress.com/en-au/travel

    • thanks bruv

Is 3x points better than buying gift cards? I'm so used to buying Ampol / Woolworth / Coles gift cards now, and the instant discount feels a bit better than 3x points..

    • May I ask how much discount did you get? And where did you buy those GC?

      • +1

Check the wiki, plenty of options there

  • Erm, don't spend that much, so won't have enough points for travel. Anything are these points good for anything else compared to the citi one I have now? 0.5% eff
