Hey, good price on the N40L… nice one REP, thanks!

    • …and bought one! Thanks again, great deal!

    • Diskless, as you'd expect.. but good price, just in time for a recent UBUNTU-based PC Home Theater system (cf DistroWatch.com).

(Boot the N40L, eg, with some PC home theater or FreeNAS, etc. from -internal- USB-stick…)

      • Good price, I'd get another one, if I could find a use for it.

Bear in mind that the N40L is far from ideal for a home theatre PC, as the BIOS does not support sleep mode, and it is not a fast booter…

        • How are so many people using it as a HTPC if it doesn't support sleep? Wouldn't its biggest function for that be to wake up record go back to sleep confused hmmmm wait a sec does that mean that people using it as a htpc just leave it on 24/7 wouldn't that the use a lot of power.

        • -2

Good point, i guess they save $ by pirate movies so waste some $ on the bill doesn't bother them.

        • +2

Two things to remember for a machine that already draws modest power:

          1. You are allowed to turn it off when it's not in use.
          2. S3 & S5 modes are available to reduce the already low power drain further.

Remember, we're not talking about running a gaming machine here…

        • +1

Correct, the thing already uses <40w at idle, so its reasonably efficient for what it is, you can get your idle loads down further using other components (ie 1155 socket gear) but the cost of that gear grows exponentially.

Once you work out the cost of the unit itself vs the power consumption, its pretty efficient for what you get.

        • +1

Makes a great HTPC and sleep mode is not showstopper. I just turn mine off and with a ssd a boot is less than 30 seconds. The power switch can be switched on with wake on LAN or the no-tech wake on big toe power button ;-)

        • Is it difficult to set up wake on LAN? I had a search online, and some people say you need extra hardware..

        • +3

No, very simple. You need to go into the BIOS and enable it and that's it. It has no relation to the software installed on the machine itself. Then there are apps on internet (and smartphone) that you use to send the 'magic packet' to turn on the PC.

The software usually takes the MAC address of the Network card. This address you can also get from the BIOS (looks something like this: AB-DC-90-BF-AA-EA).

If you can't get it from the BIOS you can type this on the command prompt of windows:
ipconfig /all and one of the devices (the one for Gigabit Ethernet) will show that in the info.

I reckon these N40Ls must be getting replaced soon, considering how the prices have dropped lately.

    • +1

Agreed but even if they are being replaced next month this price is outstanding. With a replacement model I'd be surprised to see such a low price or even one within +200.

  • +1

    $12.05 shipping to VIC

  • Just grabbed one to replace my aging HP Mediasmart Ex490

  • Any news on shoppingexpress offering a few mouth watering mobile deals for the ravenous ozbargain hordes?

  • nice price, just wondering does it have usb3 or usb2?

    • +2

All microservers have usb 2. You can usb 3 compatibility via a pciex1 addon card.

      • Thanks mate, coz I read some reviews and they said it has usb 3 but I can't find the details on the HP site.

  • +6

give us free shipping and you'll a deal :)

  • +1

Damn, bought in the last sale @ $219. $30 is a fair drop. Any chance of a voucher for some us to use to buy hard drives etc? :)

    • +1

I'll second that! I haven't even finished setting mine up yet.I only have the 60g ssd.A $30 voucher will go towards some big drives straight away.

      • +4

I hope you guys are kidding.. Margins on hardrives are very slim, no point in them throwing away $30 for a bunch of people just because you guys are greedy.

        • -1

$30 off a bare 2tb hard drive will still make it dearer than this.
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/83023

        • $30 off a bare 2tb hard drive will still make it dearer than this.
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/83023

        • apples and oranges.

        • -1

makes no difference for a HTPC,dont need any more speed to play or record movies/tv.
just need to strip drive from case, and then sell case on ebay!

        • Theres a lot of difference between a WD Red Drive and a seagate drive

        • -2

I don't think greedy is right. As a good will gesture if they feel so inclined a voucher following a $30 price drop in 10 days would keep us happy and likely to shop again. It would even have us spend more money, we aren't asking for our money back :)

        • I don't doubt it,and the WD is preferable, but you miss the point. For my purpose, solely storing and watching video it would make little or no difference to justify the extra $40-$50.

      • I went with the reds for two reasons
        1. 3yr warranty
        2. Specially designed for NAS use and WD doesn't want to repeat the idle time fiasco from the greens

  • Is the HP N40L compatible with 3TB drives? I thought the max was 2TB?

    • 3TB will work, however not as the boot drive. Not from experience, only from forums etc.

    • I've got 3TB drives in mine, but not as boot drive. There is a spare sata port inside (intended for optical drive), and an esata port (which can be "rerouted" back inside to case). A lot of people use one of both of these sata ports to add 1 or more HDD or SSD as boot drive in the optical bay, then max out the drive bays with 3TB drives.

      • +3

I've built the predecessor N36l with 5x seagate ST3000DM001 (3tb) drives and a 1tb 2.5" Toshiba drive for a client; I elected to mount a basic SATA card inside on the PCI-E 1x socket to support the additional drive, I overcame the 3tb boot limitation issue this way (16tb in that size of a package is rather handy as the machine is used as a low powered archiving solution). The N40l is very similar, slightly faster (I've only built two of those to date).

These are exceptional machines for what they do, I'd wager that anyone who saw one of these after buying one of the commercially available NAS solutions would be rather upset with their purchase unless they had basically little or no technical skills. I've read of people putting 4tb drives into them but those things remain insanely overpriced so I don't see that as a viable option for a while yet; 20+ tb in a little space is an interesting concept though.

    • As reported not for the boot (OS) drive, but all the other drives can be > 2 TB (4 TB also work).

If you are going to use the ODD port then you might want to get a custom BIOS that will enable AHCI mode and let that port work at full speed (SATA II speed).

Do a search on Google for N40L BIOS to find related links for that custom BIOS.

  • I have a bit of a noob question, but if I wanted to upgrade an Acer TimelineX 11" laptop, what sort of SSD would I want to get?

    • You want to get either a 2.5" or 1.8" SSD. The 3.5" would not fit on a small laptop.

  • Hey OP, i've added 2x WD Red drives to my order but the discount is only $5. Is the deal $5 off per drive or $5 the order?

    • $5 per order (not per drive). I had the same when I added 5x Reds.

  • Any chance of a similar deal to last time? $89 + free shipping. $85 + $14 Shipping to Perth makes it on par with local stores.

  • So how is the performance and quality of these SSDs. Looking to buy a 120GB.

    • From what I've read, fast and reliable.

      • +1

New firmware for SanDisk Extreme SSD released last week. Read SanDisk forum for more info on the problems with the old firmware. New firmware works very well for me.

  • Very nice price for the N40L. Considering these were basically $50 more last week on special then the asking price this week.

  • +2

You fiend! Stop making it difficult to not buy that bloody HP! :(

    • Phew. Managed to make it through the w/e with $200 still in my pocket.

      Came close, though. Real close.

  • Finally HP server at decent price from local store. Good work ShoppingExpress. Can I buy 2x N40L without placing a separate order?

  • +1

Does the sandisk ssd come with brackets?

    • Seen one guy on youtube just use double sided tape. Velcro type would be ok so you could remove it later if needed?

Still like to know if bracket is supplied with this one though?

      • Ummmm….yes, I think I would.

        • I got a 240gb sandisk ssd a few months ago and received no bracket. I got my ssd bracket with my case (not really a bracket but 4 screws and some rubber grommets to bolt to the bottom of the case). Not sure what you know about ssd's but they don't have to secured in place due to having no moving parts, double sided tape or velcro on the bottom or side of the case is fine.

    • You don't need brackets. I used velcro (2 dollar shop) and stuck it right below the ODD bay (there is a space big enough right in front of the HP logo, there are already some MOLEX power connectors in that space.

SSDs are very light and also no moving parts so just secured that way should be fine to keep the cables and drive from moving around unnecessarily.

  • They also offer a 2 TB cloud platform:

    "Buffalo CloudStation Pro Duo 2TB CS-WV2.0R1…" $245 + S+H

IF they're as cheap to ship as N40L's, this is OK, but not as sweet as a Buffalo 2 TB external HD, for $99 (in an OzB deal, from long-ago)

  • +1 ordered hpNL + 2tb red

going to replace my netgear 2 bay stora that has served me well for a few years.

  • Thanks! just bought another one from you.

Some pages of your website are really grinding slowly.

Could not get your checkout page to load, so used PayPal checkout instead, but after completing Paypal checkout I was redirected back to your site, but it still would not load the final payment confirmation page…

I did not seem to get charged by PayPal for the first attempt, so tried your checkout a bit later and this time it worked.

It was all the same cart, so hopefully it does not go through twice.

  • Final price for the 120gb SSD + shipping to Vic = $94.85

MSY selling for $99, could go pick it up tomorrow.

    • +7

Hmm, save five bucks & wait a few days for it to come to your door; or spend five more & get it tomorrow…what a dilemma?

I'd say this qualifies as a First World Problem! :p

  • A noob question. Does the HP N40L come with sata2 or sata3?

    • Sata2 unless you put in a sata3 PCIe expansion card.

      • There isn't any benefit for sata3 in a NAS though right?

I'm planning on buying the WD Red 2TB drive (rated as sata3).

        • Also, what RAM should I buy? I read that FreeNAS needs 4GB ram.

I also have no idea what OS to go with, even after googling.. ><

          Someone please help!

        • I'm using the cheaper Kingston KVR1333D3N9 stuff in my N40L, had no issues whatsoever (but I'm only using it as a HTPC/media server)…plus they're really low profile sticks so they tuck in nicely out of the way.

With the sata3 question, I was kind of hoping somebody with the figures already to hand on sata bus bandwidth vs the gigabit ethernet saturation for advantage in a NAS would be able to give you the accurate answer…bump anyone? ;)

        • +3

There would be no point having sata 3 as current 5400/7200rpm hard drives don't even max out the bandwidth of sata 2. It's all backwards compatible too so you will have no problems running sata 3 drives in a N40L.

As far as RAM goes, go for a 2x4GB kit. Will only cost you about $10-$15 more than 2x2GB but will give you better performance and won't need to be replaced for a while. Get any name brand kit but make sure they don't have heatsinks otherwise they will touch the drive bays and won't fit. G.skill and kingston make some good <$40 8GB kits without heatsinks.

OS is up to you, these things will work great with any. A lot of people use Freenas, windows home server 2011, windows server 2008 R2, or their choice of flavor of linux. Go with what provides the best value and works best for what you want it to do. Hope that helps!

Further into the question for StewBalls, Gigabit is only 1 gigabit per second (128MB/s) while SATA 2 runs at 3 gigabits per second (384MB/s) but with a max uncoded rate of 300MB/s. So even if you had a drive which could attain 300MB/s, the limiting factor would be the network speed. As far as I know the current crop of sata 3 HARD drives (not SSD's) won't be bottlenecked by a sata 2 port anyway as they still don't reach the sata 2 speed of 300MB/s. So even if you had unlimited network speed the limiting factor would be the mechanical drive itself, not the sata 2 port.

        • +2

Great post, thanks Zenskas! I'm far too hung over to do the research or crunch numbers so you've probably saved me from a headache or a chunder! I'm going to get myself a 2 for 1 Whopper with Cheese deal now, mmm cheap greasy hangover food! ;)

If I remember the innards right, it multiplexes the HDs over a single SATA 2 port. This gives it… around 90MB/s max per HD if going full throttle, if you fill it up to the hilt.

HDs can do faster, sequentially at least, than 90MB/s. SATA3 would theoretically help here but not necessarily realistically.

        • +2

Multiplexed over a single Mini SAS port, not SATA2…4x lanes, each @ 3Gb/s IIRC: http://dv411.com/minisas.html

        • +1

Not quite…it actually has a mini SAS connector on the mobo which takes a mini SAS to SATA breakout cable connected to the SATA backplane. This mini SAS cable goes out to four separate cables, or lanes (one for each SATA port) running at 300MB/s each :)

          StewBalls beat me to it!

        • +1

Multiplexed over a single Mini SAS port, not SATA2…4x lanes, each @ 3Gb/s IIRC: http://dv411.com/minisas.html

          Ah!

Well then, I take it all back. :)

        • 1 hard drive alone may not saturate the network, however multiple hard drives would when used in a RAID configuration.

  • Rep, include a RAM bundle deal too please.

  • Been looking to get a N40L for the last week or two. Thanks.

  • Anyone know what the onboard graphics chipset is? Everyone assumes that you'll insert a decent video card, but I'd like to find out how bad the onboard one really is first before investing my hard earned dollars in a new one.

    • Depends on if you even need one. Onboard is just a fairly weak AMD integrated chip. If you will be using this as a HTPC then you will want to get a modern card with HDMI simply because the N40L doesn't have any onboard sound. Even if you used a separate sound card, I'm not sure if the integrated graphics will handle HTPC duties like 1080p playback, and you only have a VGA connector onboard.

For anything else though you won't really need to worry. Your graphics card won't help you get better network transfers, so if it will be used as a NAS then I suggest spending your money on this: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…
That will give you slightly better network transfer speeds and iirc give you the option of wake on LAN.

      • A more interesting (and likely cheaper) option would be to use a Raspberry Pi computer (less than $50) as a diskless HTPC, booting from SD card, and put the server elsewhere.

The Raspberry Pi has 100Mbit ethernet, HDMI out, will do 1080P, and even has analog audio output if you need it. The Raspberry Pi is tiny and low power and fanless - you could stick it to the back of your TV and power it from the TV's USB port.

XBMC has been ported to the Raspberry Pi, and there are several other distros available as well.

You could turn EVERY TV in your house into a media centre, for under $50 each (but you'll have to supply the keyboard and mouse, so it may be a little more expensive).

    • Onboard Graphic is using ATI Radeon 4200.

It can do 1080p video, but you don't have onboard sound. So you'll need some something for that. Most people just get a better Video card (i.e. Radeon 6450) with HDMI output so you can have video and sound through the card and the CPU can be available for other tasks. These cards aren't that expensive (HIS Radeon 6450) < $60. You can also get an Nvidia GT210 card (more recommended for Linux installs).

  • Hi guys,

I have never set this up before. How difficult to do this as back up at home? How much IT background you need? Any step by step guide on this?

    Thanks

  • ShoppingExpress is awesome. That is all.

  • RIPPER deal! Got the server and the 120g SSD. $12 delivery to country VIC was impressive. Tops.

The person write this article need to look at the way ozbargainers spend their bucks
    http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/more-than-two-milli…

    I don't think 2mil Aussie live in poverty :P or their countryman couldn't give a care …

  • Can someone advise me if the Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 6450 Video Card 1GB DDR3 GV-R645-1GI http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/gigabyte-ati-radeon-hd… on the Shopping Express website is compatible with the N40L ??

The N40L Wiki advises GIGABYTE GV-R645D3-512I not GV-R645-1GI, although it does specify Low Profile?

    • Should work fine, as long as it's low profile and only a single slot wide then it will fit. The PCI-e x16 connector is up against the side of the case hence why it needs to be one slot wide even though it has two expansion slots total.

EDIT: Just checked the wiki and the card you specify is physically almost exactly the same as the 512MB version which is known to work. The 1GB just has more memory chips and is a tiny bit longer ;)
You might want to double check with shopping express to see if it includes the low profile bracket, couldn't see anything about it on the site.

    • Should be OK. I went with a HIS AMD Radeon HD6450 card from Ebay and it went in just fine as well.

  • +1

Bought one, wife-approved as its smaller than my mega atx case lying around the lounge :D

    • This thing has great WAF (Wife Approval Factor). I cleaned up all the cabling around the box and it's very much appreciated. And it's quiet and that also means excellent WAF.

  • +2

Any chance of $5 off each additional red drive purchased with N40L? Not much point only including one drive with a server that supports at least 4 bays.

  • damn, got one at around $229 a couple weeks back from you guys, will get time to play with it in a couple weeks, wish I'd waited now …oh well

  • Ummed and Ahhed all weekend but bit the bullet on my second one. I haven't decided it's purpose just yet but I'm thinking either a NAS box or a server to tinker around with other OS's. Also bought a 120GB SSD for this N40L, and 5x WD 3TB Reds for the first box so I can complete it as a Media center and start filling the disks with the collection. I think next is FlexRAID for some redundancy. The second N40L as a future NAS gives me options to take the disk array to 30TB+ if needed (in case the first 15TB array fills up with media).

I'll use the 2GB and HDD from the first N40L (bought last month for 265) in the second one. That should bring up the RAM upto 4 GB + 120 GB SSD + 250 GB HDD.

  • What's the estimated delivery time on a N40L

    • +1

Last time I ordered it came within a week.

      • Same, even after SE had to give AP a kick in the pants to get it motoring…once they were on the case it was under 2 days Sydney to Newy IIRC! :)

  • "Ummed and Ahhed all weekend" as well until the last minute and found out a) -$5 bundle was for the order, not -$5 for each drive, b) i had to create a new shoppingexpress account cos i either didn't have one or lost it… which meant.. c) my order got submitted at 11:59 at which time it said the coupon expired
doh! at least they processed the refund.

  • Hi All,

Thanks for the support for our weekend deal. Just a heads up for you guys, the HP N40L have received overwhelming orders and we might need a couple more days than our usual time frame to dispatch all orders.
