        • +2

Telling others to grow up while using the word 'yous'…

No you can't go back to Constantinople

      • Why did Constantinople get the works?

        • +1

  • +6

This looks like a good plug.

    • +4

im just a hair short on my savings.

  • Damn that's a good price, would have jumped on it if it was later in the year

    • +1

I am fairly certain it will be. The competition is ramping up again, so they'll have no choice.

    • +1

Hoping for September with same price, this is mad cheap. You are closer to Europe than emirates Qatar. Can hop to Greece or Italy with ease.

      • +2

its also the best way to get to Macedonia.

good for melbourne folk, waiting for sydney to follow.

        • +2

Best way for many places. Would be the best way to the caucuses. One of the best ways to Iran or Central Asia,.

  • Cheap
    How much from Syd?

    • +3

No Sydney flights yet. They are planning for a non-stop Melbourne - Istanbul flight though.

      • -5

non-stop Melbourne - Istanbul flight though.

Will they have enough fuel ?

        • +4

No…they just run out and crash.

        • +1

no, you gotta flap your hands like wingson a bird to get the final 100km.

        • +5

It will be on a350 1000 whenever they get delivered. Can fly 22 hours non stop.

          • -1

            @unhuman:

Can fly 22 hours non stop.

Is that still true if the plane if full of cargo and passengers?

          • @unhuman: Wrong. At the very most you are looking at the upper quartile of 17 hours for the regular A350-1000s.
They could fly up to 24 hours with no passengers, no freight and just crew and this is common for delivery flights. Just like when Qantas in 1989 flew London - Sydney direct. on the 747-400 for its maiden delivery flight.

Melbourne - Istanbul is about the same distance as Perth - London which is 17 hours of flying so I'd suspect with the winds the flight over would be around 17 hours and on the way back with the tailwinds 15 hours.

Qantas' A350-1000 ULRs are special as they have an increased MTOW, extra centre fuel tanks and a more premium cabin

            • @AircraftFreight: Hmm… I don’t completely agree with you here. Time will tell but Qantas will launch direct flights Sydney and Melbourne to London next year if 350 gets delivered. If 1000 can fly for 17 hours, I’m sure Turkish will invest in 1000 ulr to do the direct connection. With how Middle East is positioned on global map, airlines there don’t need to heavily invest in ULR except to flights in Oceania. Every other route that turkey wants can be completed using regular 350 or even 350 900.

              • @unhuman: Turkish Airlines will be receiving the normal A350-1000 that does have the range. Just not 22 hours of flight time.
The worlds longest flight from Auckland to Doha is operated by the same A350-1000.

        • You are supplied parachutes. The plane glide as far as it can when out of fuel. Then you jump out. Hoping your parachute opens ok. If not. Then too bad so sad.

          • @xoom: Will that be covered by Travel Insurance?

            • @jv: a replacement parachute, if it fails.

Was there decades ago and it was great, but wouldn't go there now.

    • Serious question. Why not?

      • In one word: Erdogan.

        • Any difference in Turkish economy/Tourism Pre and post Erdogan?

      • -5

  • +11

Amazing price, Istanbul is truly an amazing city - possibly the coolest city ever!

    • It's always interesting to me to hear other peoples opinions on this - I went last year in June/July and it was one of my least favourite of the 10 or so I went to in Europe

    • What did you like about it? Never been before

    • It would be interesting to know which cities you are comparing it to? where else have you been?

    • Istanbul is overrated go to Ankara it’s better;

      Istanbul is for Sydney people
Ankara is for Melbourne people, seriously.

    • -3

      Why did they change it?

      What does Istanbul even mean?

      • The name İstanbul (Turkish pronunciation: [isˈtanbuɫ], colloquial Turkish pronunciation: [ɯsˈtambuɫ]) is commonly held to derive from the Medieval Greek phrase "εἰς τὴν Πόλιν" (pronounced Greek pronunciation: [is tim ˈbolin]), which means "to the city" and is how Constantinople was referred to by the local Greeks.

Its funny how Turkish people insist on the name Istanbul, like it's their own origin, while it's Greek as well…

          • +1

@jv: Greeks were referring to Constantinople (actually Constantinopole) as the "Poli / Pole" (city), to shorten the name.
When someone was asking another, where was he going, he replied "is tin Poli" = "to the city"
Being the middle ages and how people talked, and said it so many times, and passed as saying from the Greek people to Turkish (that was just hearing it without knowing) is-tin-Poli if you say it faster and in a lousy bogan way back then… it became "istinbul" to the Turkish, Istanbul maybe after the cleared it up…
Istinbul/Istanbul, seem more easier to pronounce for the Turkish people, rather the whole Constantinople name, that even the Greeks informally had it shortened.
So, they didn't know it was actually an adaptation, it didn't happen now with the all the modern minds and strategic decisions, it happened in or after 1422…

            • -4

              @ElectroFoX:

Istanbul, seem more easier to pronounce for the Turkish people

So they found Greek easier to pronounce than Turkish?

even the Greeks informally had it shortened.

              Not really…

Constantinople means the city of Constantine.
Poli is just the word for city…

Didn't you learn all this when studying Classic Literature?

By the way, the Vikings called it Miklagard (Great City)

              • @jv: No mate, I'm Greek so I know a bit better than what you "studied"

Constantinople means the "City of Constantine."

You COPY what I say and then insult me that I don't know my own languange, and you know better than me…

                      • +1

                        @jv: Typical ignorant response.

It's Poli with capital P, that's specifically for the Constanipole, as THE City.
Same way we write God with capital G.

That's the difference with all the other polis (cities).

                        And reference from Wikipedia:
                        Names of Constantinople
…As the largest and wealthiest city in Europe during the 4th–13th centuries and a center of culture and education of the Mediterranean basin, Constantinople came to be known by prestigious titles such as Basileuousa (Queen of Cities) and Megalopolis (the Great City) and was, in colloquial speech, commonly referred to as just Polis (ἡ Πόλις) 'the City' by Constantinopolitans and provincial Byzantines alike.

I'm not gonna ever reply to you, as you proven you're both ignorant, and copypaste offensive.
                        You've made yourself a joke.

          • @jv: If you want to be technical on terminology, it's a city in Türkiye…
last time I was there my fantastic tour guide, to make this point, said "that bird has nothing to do with us, and we have nothing to do with that bird"

            • @MrFrugalSpend:

              it's a city in Türkiye

No. Turkey just wanted it changed in 2021.

My whole life it was Turkey, so I'm not required to change what I call it.

              • +1

@jv: "Turkey has been spelled and pronounced Türkiye (Tur-kee-yeah) in Turkish since the country became a republic in 1923"
My trip was 2012 when they made it clear it was not Turkey.
What happened in 2021 was Erdoğan said, and I'm heavily paraphrasing, 'FFS you Anglicising ignoramuses, it's not Turkey, please call us Türkiye!'

So it is kind of like when your colleague "Davo" that you've been calling "Davo" since he starting working with you 6 years ago, finally loses it and says 'FFS its "David" or maybe "Dave", but not "Davo"!' … and you're now the one that is still calling him Davo, even in formal client meetings.

So when previously we all had ignorance in the western world to the fact this pissed them off, what those who now insist on retaining "Turkey" are doing (given we are now aware of the correct terminology), is converting that ignorance into stubborn arrogance.

                • @MrFrugalSpend:

"Turkey has been spelled and pronounced Türkiye (Tur-kee-yeah) in Turkish since the country became a republic in 1923"

Maybe by some people, but most people called it Turkey and still do.

Just because a few people want to change the name in 2021 does not mean that we are required to change.

                  • @jv: Sure thing Davo

                    • @MrFrugalSpend: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey

But sure, you just keep obeying what Erdoğan tells you to do…

                      • @jv: You can carry on calling them Turkey all you like. As you were on here schooling people on language and names, what comment I offered was "if you want to be technical on terminology" - you have chosen to not be, that's fine… be unofficial, simple, I just didn't think that suited your usual style.

Regardless, it was a very nice Türk tour guide who asked me to do it, so I do. I prefer to respect other people's cultures and what their preferred name is, especially if asked nicely in person. His name was Ergin (so not Erdoğan), and as I said this was long before Erdoğan's request to the international community, which you brought up by referencing "2021".

PS - thanks for proving my point… the first point made in the body of text on the link you said is "Turkey, officially the Republic of Türkiye"

                        • @MrFrugalSpend:

You can carry on calling them Turkey all you like.

I will as Erdoğan has no authority over me.

                        • @MrFrugalSpend:

and the article then continues to refer to it as Turkey

Went to Istanbul in September last year. Highly recommend it if you havent been. Such a vibrant city, with amazing food.

  • +1

    Everywhere cheap airfare, except Qantas

  • +1

Be careful with your luggage. Because Turkish Airlines will not. If they cannot find it after some extend time to transfer to the next flight or to give it to you get ready for the bad news about the condition of your suitecase.

  • Any recommendations for FUE Hair Clinics?

Literally caught two flights with them in August, worst experiences ever with Turkish Airlines.
But pretty good for a hair transplant trip?

In one flight, they didn't load ANYONES luggage on lmaoooooooo

    • Where were you flying from/to?

      • +1

Nevshir to Istanbul (hot air balloon place)

        • Hopefully they are a bit more organised for international flights.

          • @findingbargains: Nope, took international from Naples to Istanbul - arrived late and refused to communicate / organise our next flight. Got us to run around in the worlds biggest airport instead, only to find out its been delayed. Literally the worst airline.

            • +3

@RickyPoontang: You can not discredit an airline by just that
Turkish Airlines are one of the most popular airlines out there
Even better than many European ones
              This is a fact
Things like this happen with every airliner
              Can happen
And if they do they are not a thing that happens frequently

            • +5

@RickyPoontang: I have the best experiences with Turkish Airlines. Comfortable, great food, excellent service. New aircraft too.

    • +1

Never had an issue with them with international flights re:luggage personally. Flights were pretty on time too.

Time to go to Türkiye and give back… we've all benefited a lot from the cheap Türkiye subscriptions.

Dont forget to bring back some turkish delights and a suitcase full of netflix gift cards.

    • +1

Nice to see you make the effort to write 'Türkiye' as that country wishes to be known now as it pulls back from it's relatively knew language begun in the early 20th century under Ataturk's reign as President.
