…not sure how it stacks against the Acer Nitro 5

    Poorly

    Slower CPU i5-12500H vs i7-12650H
    Slower RAM DDR4 vs DDR5
    Slower GPU 4060 75W vs 4060 140W
    Smaller battery 54Wh vs 58Wh

This is a max $1K 4050 class laptop with a low spec 4060 shoved in

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/766276 but it was worth $2000 only 7 months ago?

What makes you think it was worth $2000 7 months ago? That deal only has 7 votes.

        • -1

I don't think it was, that's the point

    • Actually the 4060 max TDP is only 115W so the 140W claim is mostly buzzword anyway.

      • +1

140W is usually with dynamic boost of an extra 15W but only in low cpu load conditions

        • yeah and its really hard to hit 140W in real world application anyways

      • +3

… so the 140W claim is mostly buzzword anyway.

        No

The Acer has a 280W AC power adapter and higher spec cooling to run the max 140W TGP

This Gigabyte runs a 150W AC adapter and low spec cooling design consistent with a $1K gaming laptop

Thanks for the write up.. in market for a laptop but dont know much about it, good to see comparison like this.

4xxx 4060 GPU power TDP/Wattage IS NOT similar to 3xxx series 3060 TDP/Wattage in Laptops. Higher wattage 3xxx laptop GPUs had much improvement over lower wattage, wereas this is NOT the case for 4xxx laptop GPUs
Jarrodstech did a youtube explaining it.
Any improvement cuts off at around 80w in 4xxx laptops.
So you will see MINIMAL gains in a 140w 4060 Laptop GPU over an 80w one.
Cooling in this laptop and an adequate PSU will be much more important.
Also these laptops are notorious for crap quality.

Also these laptops are notorious for crap quality.

Notorious on OZb due to a vocal minority that shit on GB all the time. Sure, maybe they are not the best quality brand but they aren't bad enough to deserve a neg at all. The quality (in my experience) is much better than Acer for example. And anywhere else they get pretty decent reviews, especially the parts, motherboards etc. A bunch of people here neg them (and other Taiwanese brands) all the time and push Lenovo a bunch. So when my laptop died after 10 years (It was actually a custom Gigabyte) I went looking for a replacement on here and I got a brand new gaming Lenovo (It was branded as 'gaming' by Lenovo, but not a 'real' gaming laptop like the Legion or anything, but still, it should have been decent) because Lenovo is a 'good' brand and gets 'good' reveiws and because of people like you on here on the GB deals saying GB quality sucked and are crap on every GB post ever.

The Lenovo died after 2 months. Like major hardware 'device does not POST' failure, lights were on but nobody was home. I couldn't run memtest or even linuxboot it or anything to troubleshoot at all— couldn't get into the BIOS either but who knows because Lenovo actually hides BIOS commands on startup. Tech guy at Officeworks was at a complete loss too. I had used it half a dozen times at that point. It was absolutely brand new.

Other things I didn't like about Lenovo; it had no screen protector film or anything around the laptop. Was literally a laptop in a box with the two foam inserts and a piece of paper for the manual which made it feel cheap to me. Again, they hide BIOS commands on startup, had a bunch of invasive Lenovo brand bloatware, had no discernible screws in the back (I was considering upgrading the RAM down the line), still got very hot with games, but it 'felt' sturdy I guess and it had a decent screen. The best thing about it was that it was still under warranty, and their customer service gave me a return authorization within 5 minutes so I could get a refund. So their CS was good— not sure about how they are with out of warranty stuff though. They offered to fix it but I said no as I have never in my adult gaming life of over 20 years had a computer randomly cark it in 2 months. One day it turned on the next day it didn't. The only time something came close to this kind of hardware failure was an old HP tower with Windows Me on it which died (power) because Me would never shut down and had to be unplugged constantly. But even that took a good year before it up and died.

My point is, I would never go Lenovo again based on my personal experience even though it's 'better' than most brands. I think they are fine but I personally think it's always a crapshoot no matter what brand you buy (especially laptops) because of manufacturers trying to get the most out of cheap parts etc. Shit just fails sometimes and I think Lenovo is no exception and I don't think GB is really that much 'worse' than them. Paying more yielded me nothing— so far my GB feels and runs the same as my gaming Lenovo, with maybe it feeling a bit lighter in the chassis. Overheating is the same. Most of it is the same. (Box was much nicer though). I certainly wouldn't shoot my mouth of saying they are 'crap quality' without even using one, but I guess people here do.

So yeah, GB and MSI are as not as big as Lenovo so they can be slightly worse quality. But even the big names can have crap components and crap quality.

  • Now all these other shitty gaming laptops still asking for expensive price, and compare with Acer Nitro, it is now become ozbargainers best value gaming laptops!

If Acer will bring in more of their Neo & non-Neo models with a super competitive prices, sure will become the king of gaming laptops in the near future!

  • Are we comparing it with this one? Looks like this model wipes the floor with the deal on offer here:
