  • I'm still on Windows Vista. Would I have problem with this windoes 7 upgrade offer?

    • Yes

      • He asked "Would I have problem with this windoes 7 upgrade offer?"

Yes mean he will have problem?

        • Should be alright. Found this from FAQ

If I purchased a qualifying PC with Windows 7 Professional on it during the promotion period, but downgraded to Windows XP SP3, does the PC still qualify for the Windows Upgrade Offer?
Yes. The Windows version on the Certificate of Authenticity and related product key are what is relevant for eligibility, not the version of Windows being used. Note that the upgrade experience may vary based on which version of Windows is installed on the PC.

        • I also found this from FAQ:
Do I have to install the Windows 8 upgrade on the eligible PC, or can I install it on another PC?
The upgrade offer is tied to a Windows 7 PC purchased between 2 June 2012 and 31 January 2013, but you can choose to redeem the offer and install the upgrade on any compatible Windows-based PC with a qualifying base operating system.

Can I use a Windows 8 upgrade SKU to upgrade to Windows 8 from my existing Windows OS?
Yes. Windows 8 upgrade SKUs are designed for use on a computer that is already licensed for an earlier version of Windows (Windows XP SP3 or higher). Depending on the Windows version you are upgrading from, a "clean install" of Windows 8 may be required.

Does the upgrade need to be done on a PC with Windows already installed?
The license terms for the upgrade require upgrading from a valid "genuine" version of Windows. Visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ if you are not certain whether or not your PC has genuine Windows.

        • Well that's awesome! I guess I'll finally get some use out of my very old WinXP SP3 VLKs!! :D

        • Confirmed. Updated from Vista to Windows 8. Sweet.

    • I like to know as well. According to the details of this offer, it states "
      Upgrade Software
Each upgrade license will apply to only one PC and may only be installed on PCs with a valid base license to a qualifying operating system (i.e., Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista or Windows 7).

While the offer will be limited to eligible customers who purchase a qualified PC, the upgrade may be installed on any compatible Windows-based PC with a qualifying operating system (see Windows 8 System Requirements)."

  • so has anyone been able to do a fresh windows 8 install then activate using the $14.99 key?

    • +2

Yes. Downloaded and paid with Win 7 Upgrade Assistant, copied to USB, rebooted, clean formatted, 15min later voila! Win 8 FTW, activated fine. Very impressed Microsoft. I'll be updating all 3 of my systems to Win 8.

    • +1

Apparently you can use the upgrade CD / USB to install fresh (without any trace of Win7 being previously installed). When you try to activate you will get an error message - just go to this site and follow Method #2 which works on Win8 as well:

      http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows-7/clean-install-…

Voila, you will be able to activate as if it wasn't an upgrade version.

  • -3

Just wait until Microsoft starts asking for proof of purchase before letting you buy then people won't be able to enter any purchase date or faked PC details. So probably better to get the orders in ASAP.

    • I don't know what you're talking about…. I found a promotional code on the internet, and it worked with the upgrade advisor.

No. I don't know why all of the details associated with the promo code are fake…. That's most unfortunate!

    • Do some people on Ozbargain think about how much effort it would take for them to verify almost 5 months of GLOBAL sales for Windows 7 PCs!?

      • -1

almost 5 months of GLOBAL sales for Windows 7 PCs!?

Not 5 months. Not even 5 years.
        Just over 3 years.

From 02/06/12 to 27/10/12, it's 1 more week till 5 months that this $15 offer's eligibility criteria can be legally met.

  • I used my real eMachines laptop with Win7 OEM to get the $15 deal and i bought it before June 2nd 2012. I think it was unfair of Microsoft to expect only store bought PCs bought between a certain date time frame to be only eligible to get the deal. Should have been for all store bought PCs that came with Windows 7.

I guess if Microsoft cared they would have made it a requirement for proof of purchase before buying. But who knows if that might change in the coming future.

  • Does anyone know if an upgrade bought for one machine can be used for another? I received an upgrade for my laptop but want to install Win 8 on a less used home desktop.

    • According to the Q & A's on the microsoft website - yes it can be installed on any machine.

"Do I have to install the Windows 8 upgrade on the eligible PC, or can I install it on another PC?

Before asking a question do us all a favour and read previous posts … please!! This was asked and answered just a few posts up this very page.

    • I can't see why not if you haven't activated the product key yet.

    • I've asked that too on whirlpool and no one has replied about that.
If you read the Q&A it says you can install to another system, but it will be tied to the system bought in those dates.

Im not sure if the download version is similiar to an OEM version though. As the preinstalled windows 7 machines are all oem versions…meaning you can not install that windows 7 on another system.

So im thinking this 14.99 upgrade could then also be "oem" as it is intended for machines preinstalled with windows 7. Meaning once you upgrade/change the computer it may not work on the new system and will only work on the system it was originally activated with.

Only way to tell is for someone to try and upgrade a 2nd computer and see what it says on activation….

Hopepully someone will have the answer!

Otherwise Im going to buy the retail update from OW

      • My bet is that it will activate fine the first time as the product key hasn't already been activated yet.

Does anyone know how to make a Boot DVD ? I selected the option "Install from Desktop later" and now I am thinking I should have rather made a Boot DVD instead.

    • +1

There's a new shortcut on your Desktop - "Install Windows".

Run that and it gives you a couple of options. Select "Install by creating media", then "ISO File". Then just save the ISO somewhere and burn with whatever program you want.

  • Am tempted but I don't like the touch-screen oriented interface on a pc. Is there a way to make it look like old-school xp?

  • +1

Does this allow you to downgrade back by any chance..

    • Pretty sure you can't. If you're on Vista/W7, just do a windows backup before you do the upgrade. The built-in backup program can do a full system image.

  • +1

got the promo code too…it just asked for purchase date, i made one up in septemeber 2012

  • +1

I accidentally proceeded with the upgrade. Now the upgrade is completed and I want to backup the downloaded ISO file but cant find it anywhere. Can I download the file again from somewhere?

    • Hey dude i spent ages looking for it as well, there's a tiny link in your confirmation email from microsoft with a link to the installer and you can redownload the files to make the iso.

      Direct link below:

  • just wanted to say, I went from a non-legit version of Windows 7 running Daz Loader and upgraded (inside windows 7) using the upgrade tool. It never asked me for a windows 7 key at all.

now i'm completely activated and running Win8 Pro for 14 bucks. I dunno what all the hoopla is about, it's running great so far. Installed Pokki start menu straight away, I won't be going back to win7 ever again.

    • same case
first installation went failed as it was checking the win7 key.

On second try, I deleted the partition of the primary SSD and reinstalled successfully from scratch.

(most likely the first time failed due to formatting the drive only, it should be both delete partition and format)

ps: I got the 64bit win8 pro version, maybe because the win7 was also 64bit

      • I keep getting asked for key, using same set up as you guys. Drat.

        • Start a convo with me in OzBargain - I'll try help you.
          It's still working for me

        • I sent you a message mate.

    • I dunno what all the hoopla is about

I don't think there's any difference between a Windows 8 Upgrade key and a retail key.

      • I meant more about people whinging about windows 8 (no start button, metro)

im loving both actually, well, im running Pokki so i have a start menu! but metro is amazing

  • How do I select 32-bit or 64-bit? It doesn't give me any options to choose from…

    • I was thinking the upgrade assistant probably knows if you're running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows and gives you the right upgrade ISO for that version of windows which you're upgrading from. So if you're running Windows 7 64-bit it will probably automatically issue the Windows 8 Pro 64-bit ISO.

Just upgraded my laptop i bought a few years back running non-legit windows. Cheers!

  • +2

I bought my windows 7 during this period but i'm not even sure whether to upgrade. I've used the beta version of the windows 8 and it looked confusing as heck!

    • +1

Give it a few days and you'll find yourself working just as efficiently as you would in W7 again.

If you want to ease the transition, I highly recommend two apps — Start8 or Launchy

      • Does anyone know if this yet compatible with the latest AMD video cards?

  • +1

Worked! Thank you. Nice, clear instructions :) I am entitled to the free student version but I couldn't get it to work so this is better than nothing. Thanks heaps, 0hun!

  • Brilliant. Worked over a smelly W7 on a very old lappy with spurious data entered into the offer application fields.

    Result!!

Get in early before they start closing the loopholes.

    • It'll be stupid if they will want to close this loophole… unlike the myspace microsoft hup thing, they're getting revenue (reduced) and additional customers to be hooked onto Win8 (Which has an app store btw) which will further generate normal revenue that they would be not likely to get if they close this loophole.

  • Big warning when using PAYPAL! You have to wait a few days for confirmation!

    • I did one transaction last night and one 4 hours ago via paypal and both worked immediately

    • Is your Paypal address verified? Does it have a Debit / Visa card linked to it? That might be the reason why it requires confirmation.

    • i did 2 machines with PP yesterday and had my code straight away.

Edit: did you log in to paypal or did you just enter credit card info to PP? Could make a difference if you were not logged into a verified pp account.

      • Was verified

        • Paypal is saying it is an issue of Microsoft in processing. From Arvato Distribution GmbH

  • Not a happy customer of Win 8 so far

    • +2

      Thanks for the insightful feedback!

    • Win X & Win C = Happiness.

  • Not sure why you are having problems with paypal.

I just purchased with my paypal account and got the key immediately.

Got confirmation and am downloading now.

  • Omg no auto dial on VPN PPTP connections. Is there any program to fix this? as I need it always on. What were they thinking removing such a simple but necessary option. Its going to force me back to windows 7 just for that until its fixed.

  • Downloaded for $14.99.
I did an upgrade and it did a fresh install instead.
I must have missed a step somewhere.
Lucky it was my son's computer. Lol.
It's a completely different and pain to use.
Why do you need a live account?
My son wants its Windows 7 back.

  • +2

Everything worked as described - paypal worked instantly.

Just going to install it on that PC I recently bought at full price from Hardly Normal. (cough, cough).

    • Thieving barsteward!

Maybe next he will sell fresh air in bottles lol

      • Also guys - all the Pro "Upgrade" keys are just retail keys - no difference, you can just clean-install and activate with the "upgrade" key - it's showing up as a normal Win8Pro Retail in Microsoft VAMT 3.0.

        • +1

That's awesome. You'd think Microsoft would've learned of their mistake when Paul Thurott posted the famous Win 7 Upgrade exploit on his website.

        • I'm actually thinking that MS might have finally realised that if they make the upgrade/install process too difficult that people just resort to piracy.

Besides, you've always been able to call the Activation line to activate damn near any product key.. You just have to remember to select the options that say "Yes, I am reinstalling on the same PC" or "Yes, I uninstalled the old version" - if Office. :)

        • Maybe MS should be TWITS too?

        • I'm yet to see an "Upgrade" type of key in Microsoft VAMT 3.0, if anyone would care to satisfy my curiousity, please PM me an old Upgrade key (Not Win8, anything, XP, vista, win 7).
Also a small known trick that is related through this method… you can easily upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate OEM if you had Windows 7 Home Premium OEM pre-installed on your computer, for free. Sure it might not be legal, but i mean.. how often do you really look at a man's shoes?

        • Ooh, what is this trick? OEM only?

        • Yes, OEM pre-installed by the factory, not OEM-from-MSY installed-by-self :P
PM me if you're going to continue on Win7 + want the free upgrade :)

      • I don't blame him, I've been trying 4 different emails since yesterday and all of them failed to get through. One was a brand new Win7 ultrabook, bought in May 2012 (yeah, yeah, tell me about it unghh) which I registered end of May, and the other is an ancient WinXP laptop. For my last 2 tries, I couldn't even make it through to the 2nd screen as M$ immediately told me I was not eligible for this offer.

Errrm, if any ozbargainers would be kind enough to help me out, I could PM them my email address etc. Otherwise, it's a frustrating 39.99 just to "test" out Win 8…

  • If my sister gets the "upgrade" key using her PC which is running a 32bit OS, is that key for a 32bit version only, or could she use her key with the DVD I made of the 64bit iso?

    • +1

Keys are "bit-agnostic", so yup it'll work.

      • Thanks eug, I thought it would be ok but is always good to check :).

  • If i do this, how do i make a copy of the ISO?

    • If you selected to option to create an iso, you can use imgburn to burn the iso to DVD

  • OK, I think MS clued on with all these bogus purchases…went through the process and they are now asking for a Win7 cd key during the registration process.

  • Just tried it and yes, they ask for win 7 cd key. Tried an upgrade key but doesn't work.

    • Yes. Regretting now for hesitating to buy it few days ago

      • +1

The loophole has been closed 2 days ago.
Questions is can you use same Window 7 key to validate multiple upgrade offers. Hmmmmm
        http://asia.cnet.com/microsoft-closes-windows-8-upgrade-offe…

        • Yeah, I saw Windows 8 at HN and only just seriously thought about upgrading…

          HN = $58, online = $39.99, Promo = $14.99

Darn…$14.99 is so much easier to justify. Any user feedback on Win 8?

  • This is a long shot, but if anyone bought a key they don't intend on using, I'll buy it from you. I can accept a 'reasonable' markup on the original price too.

    Contact me via PM, friends.

    • Why is this being downvoted? The loophole has been closed people, see above. I don't own Win 7. Geez we have some idiots in this community.

      • -1

I upvoted to cancel out the idiot who downvoted you, I also am in the same position as you! :D

        • You could try taking a photo of a S/N on a retail display W7 machine :)

  • I'm having trouble getting the $15 upgrade. I purchased my ultrabook in between the required date but it isn't going through. Any reason why? It's asking for the product key which I give but still says it failed. Btw my ultrabook is a OEM Pro version Windows 7 but I don't see it not being compatible.

Any OzBargainers having same issue? Need help!

  • No problem going through the steps and recieved my key.

Can anyone direct me to a download of the Retail iso, can't seem to find one

    • It's a part of the process. It should've given you the option to save to USB or ISO.

  • It's random but it still works. I was able to upgrade 2 PCs, one of them was running XP!
