Google Pixel Tablet $599 (Was $899) Delivered @ Google Store

690

Numerous retailers selling it for $899, so I guess $599 is a steal.

128GB is $599 was A$899, available both Porcelain and Hazel
256GB is $699 was $999, only available in Porcelain

I'm not sure how good it is; perhaps someone here can share their experience.

IMO, the original RRP of $899 was priced way to high for what you get..

    $509.10 with StudentBeans/UNiDAYS

    • How do you get the Unidays 10% code? I have a student email so can possibly get my own, unless I need to request only?

      • +1

Sign up to UNiDAYS and generate your own code here (10% Off your purchase on Google Store).

        • Thanks

        • +2

Don't forget student beans gives you a code hourly vs unidays that only creates codes every 24 hours

      • There's also a code giveaway somewhere on this site

    • +1

Agreed. Even $500 still expensive. maybe $350 i would think about it

  • +27

599 should be the RRP. will wait for the actual deal..

    • The question is will it go under 50%?

      • Let's all hope for a fire sale

  • +4

Doesn't really compare to some of the cheap Lenovo tablets that have been posted here on OzB. I'd save the coin and go the Lenovo (or spend the extra on a nice bluetooth speaker and stand).

    • +1

      You mean the Duet 5?

    • Which cheap Lenovo you recommend?

    • +1

Duets are freakin amazing. Detachable keyboard with the trackpad and Chrome OS makes for such a better experience imo. I tried the pixel tablet and it's really good performance and dock is nice for audio, but ended up selling it and continued back on my duet 3. Hopefully Lenovo brings out a new duet range in the future, as I think they're discontinued?

      • I dunno, I got a Duet 5 from the recent Good Guys deal and the manufacture date was late Dec last year! It was actually made after I ordered it lol

        • I had that too and had Lenovo support fix it up with my receipt for reference

        • fresh stock

    • +1

No experience with their tablets, but the one time I was supplied a Lenovo laptop it was filled with bloat wear/junk Lenovo software - to the point it was pretty much unusable. Swore ide never touch a Lenovo device again.

      • You can just uninstall anything you don't like.

      • +1

It's the same for any branded laptops unfortunately. Best to uninstall it all as the first thing you do.

      • +3

You are missing out on the best keyboard feel on a laptop with Thinkpads. For students and office use it makes a huge difference.

        • ThinkPads have the best keyboard feel hands down.

  • +18

I'm not trusting Google making home devices, all Google Home/Nest devices that I own lose so many functions and became so glitchy only in a couple years after launch, surprisingly just after the official warranty end.

    • +17

      “HEY GOOGLE!!!!!!” “STOP!!!!! “

    • +1

      100% agree with your sentiments.

I've setup my and my parents house with Google verse - doorbell, cameras etc and it was an investment getting it all setup. I mostly did it out of loyalty with Google, ease of use and always being a Pixel user. I did not care about Google collecting more data than they should be but still, they somehow have a knack of letting their users down!

    • +11

Yeah what on earth is going on? It's like my google nest hub is going senile… Can barely hear me or comprehend me. It has gotten worse!

      • +1

yeah all my google home devices are dumb as at the moment….I did have a dig around some forums. Seems google gutted their assistant team to fill out their Google Bard (AI) team. The liklihood is that google bard will assimilate the assistant functions but who knows if existing devices would be compatible

    • +1

Google has always been this way, they kill software and hardware products and stop supporting them

      https://killedby.tech/google/

    • I spent hours trying to figure out how to stop my google nest screen from showing my photos from my phone. In the end I just gave up and unplugged it and now it's sitting in the pile of shame.

  • +5

$599 with 20-25% off and we'll start talking

      • +1

        That's 10% off.

        • Technically 599 - 509 = 90 = 15% off. Not that close hey.

          • @bcYield: True, not sure how OP did that calculation.

            • @magic8ballgag: OP meant $450 and under and I agree too.

Still not bad at this price if I got spare money, it's a good clean smart home dashboard, of course not the daily tablet for most people who complain about.

    • Waiting til at least $399 to even consider it

  • +4

Thanks to the comments, I'm still holding my money

I was looking at this the other day. Google have stopped investing in tablets. So don't expect a future version to be released.

    • +5

Google have stopped investing in tablets

You have a source for that?

All article I've found was back in 2019 (prior to the release of the Pixel Tablet).

      • -5

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_Tablet

        Quoting:
"After Google announced it had abandoned plans on developing further tablets, Dieter Bohn of The Verge criticized Google's "institutional neglect of Android and ChromeOS on tablets", noting that Google's many tablet efforts had failed simply because they had not been a priority for the company and opining that it would be difficult for Google to "catch up" with Apple's iPad Pro.[11] Following the announcement of the Pixel tablet and Pixel Watch at the 2022 Google I/O, The Verge's Jon Porter opined that Google was taking a subtle approach at Apple's "walled garden" ecosystem strategy,[12] while his colleague Dan Seifert found the tablet's design unattractive and cheap-looking.[13] J. R. Raphael conceded that the tablet did not radiate a "premium" appearance, but speculated that the tablet was more akin to a smart display and concluded that Google may not be seeking to compete with the iPad.[14]"

        • +9

That quote is referencing an article from 2019 (as per Wikipedia citation) - prior to the release of the Pixel Tablet.

          • @RichardL: Yes Wikipedia is often a poor source for info at the best of times.

However I don’t know what the original comment meant by future releases. Are they referring to a new pixel tablet or new Android version? I’d expect this tablet to see the 5 years of software updates like their phones. Whether Google releases new hardware continuing down this tablet/home dock path, I’d be surprised if they do given the lack of demand. Working on developing android to work better on bigger displays, well that won’t stop as the folding screen devices will continue to gain more market.

      • +2

The best tablet Google released was the Nexus 7 2013

    • +4

I'm not sure that's true - they're putting more effort into foldables, which are essentially a blend of phone and tablet.

And this Pixel tablet is relatively new, albeit after a long break since the Nexus line.

    • Not making sense since Google just invested a ton on the phone.

  • +5

I can see these going all the way down to bargain basement prices.

  • +8

I don’t think $599 a steal. Probably needs to be down $299 to be considered a steal. At this $599 price it still seems too expensive for what it offers.

  • +1

Tensor g2 and 60hz screen for $599 is still overpriced. Better devices from Samsung and Apple

  • +7

It's just a trash android tablet with a magnet and speaker at the back. It's nothing special. The tablet is probably worth $199 and the speaker $99 + the magnet and tech making it as 1 +$99. So I agree with someone else around the 299 mark is a steal. $399 is a fair price for what you are getting.

  • +1

I really wanted this device to be great, particularly as an Android user who prefers the Android features and UI over iOS.

However, this product is just not compelling. It feels slow, which is strange as it's the same SoC as the Pixel 7, but it realistically should have been the Tensor G3 from the Pixel 8. It's also a bit disappointing with 8GB of RAM and would have been better with 12GB.

The Tab S8 Ultra is obviously an awesome Android tablet, but what's missing is just like the general base model iPad competitor. Like the "good enough" loungeroom tablet to browse the web, check emails, and watch some videos.

The speaker dock is cool, but I don't think it's a feature that makes up for its shortcomings. It's a great model for how a charging dock could be though.

  • Can this be used as a security cam?

    • +1

No. The Hub Max works with Nest Aware so it's strange the Pixel Tablet doesn't when it is meant to be the new replacement.

    • Should do at least after a tweak since it runs android?

  • I would like something like this to replace the home phone. We like video calls on a tablet over the old land line. But I want to make sure its back in its "dock" so to speak.

  • +7

The Nexus 7 was still the gold standard in terms of Android value tablets.

    I miss my Nexus devices…

    • I missed that too.

It got a built in GPS, so even in a plane you can track your exact location. Great if you are lost in a forest with no reception.

    • Whilst they were great devices (affordable, simple, etc.), the hardware was crap.

Google have come a long way since their Nexus range, and with that comes an increase in cost.

  • +4

    I'm not sure how good it is;
4.9/5.0 according to fake paid reviews for this trash
    https://www.telstra.com.au/accessories/tablets/google/pixel-…

    • +1

      Jaysus. You weren't joking.

  • Just don't be in a situation where you need to replace anything like the screen. All the original parts are through iFixit which does not ship to Aus.

  • +3

    I bought this. It's a poor product.

  • +1

60hz screen should be a crime at this point.

  • As someone that prefers Google phones over Apple and Samsung, it's quite upsetting that we're yet to see a Pixel tablet on the level of iPads and recent Galaxy Tabs.

  • +2

My 2 cents - Owned and returned mine, I purchased it when it was 509 with the free original case from Google.

    Pros
    * Charging dock and magnetic setup is fantastic, battery life is literally a non-issue anymore.

    Cons
    * Speakers are horribly tinny. When docked, it doesn't improve at all (only gets louder).
    * 60hz refresh rate was the ultimate dealbreaker for me. Navigating the UI, scrolling or any animations are choppy as hell. Not sure why this is as even our original iPad Air from yesteryear is still smoother.
    * When docked, the assistant requires unlocking the tablet to perform simple task's. Makes it useless vs a much cheaper nest hub
    * Cameras are trash
    * IMO the case that google offers is absolutely necessary to enjoy the tablet, makes docking and standing up the tablet seamless. Not sure if there are 3rd party cases that replicate the functionality.

    • 60hz is the reason for choppiness??

  • Can I ask a silly question. Is there any way to get a StudentBeans/UniDays account if you are not a student?

  • I'm tempted with this to use as a home assistant dashboard, but can't bring myself to spend that much on it. The appeal is the fact that it has what seems like a nice dock.

Anyone know of any good options for a Lenovo tablet (or equivalent) with a similar dock (no need for speakers). The dock seems like it would be a bit nicer/sturdier than just a tablet case with a stand.

  • These google hubs are terrible had a home max hub and the device bricked itself by bad firmware update
