$58 Each Window 8 Upgrade (Retail Disc) NATIONWIDE - Harvey Norman

451

Was reading the West Australian this morning and found a cheaper window 8 upgrade than the recommended retail price. $18 more expensive than the $40 digital download (I assume that the server will be hammered tomorrow with alot of people leeching).

Also another image link taken with my Iphone 5 :)

Because it's not the same product. Some people have horrible data limits (HELLO WE'RE IN AUSTRALIA) and prefer this option…?

      • +2

$18 more for a hard copy with box art and nicely printed out serial number! its worth it… but will this work at HN in NSW.. can i just walk into a HN and buy it for $58 bux come tomorrow morning?

      • +3

Because it's not the same product

It's exactly the same product, just a different delivery channel…

        • +10

Pizza costs more when you get it delivered. Software costs more when it's physical. The list goes on jv.

          Definitely a bargain!

        • you have to factor in an additional $5.95 from Harvey Norman for delivery too…

        • True fact. I reckon other retailers will beat this price though taking into account deliver costs too

        • Is buying a movie off iTunes exactly the same as buying the DVD?

        • +1

Is buying a movie off iTunes exactly the same as buying the DVD?

The experience is different, but the product may be the same, depending on the quality in iTunes.

The product is the same though assuming the same quality… You watch it on the same TV…

        • +4

So downloading is not the same as buying a DVD then. Did you expect the cost of producing, shipping, stocking, and retailing a physical product to be zero? Some people prefer digital downloads (like me), some people prefer a physical product. For the latter, this is a good deal.

Surely you've heard of renters who live off a 3G connection as it's not worth hooking up ADSL? There's more to the world than just you. :)

        • Not necessarily. It might have a different audio track(s), or be in different resolution, or not come with special features. The Windows 8 image is exactly the same whether you download it or buy a disc.

        • OK, so itunes download vs audio CD. It's the same scenario - one costs less to supply than the other, so one is cheaper.

Lets not forget that the typical consumer cannot tell the difference between a 256k AAC and uncompressed audio.

        • I meant more in the sense of stereo vs 5.1 vs 7.1 sound but yeah, that's a better comparison.

        • It's exactly the same product, just a different delivery channel…

One goes through more distribution channels than the other, exchanging hands several times. More middle men wanting a cut. Therefore you can expect that one to be priced higher.

This is a bargain if you're after a disc copy, no matter how you look at it. You can argue the merits of digital being better than disc, but if you're after a disc there's no argument than an extra $18 is better than paying an extra $50.

        • Like it or not, Win9 will highly likely be full digital (ISO) or flash media (USB) distribution, so this might be the last retail disc ver. Can't really argue then.

        • carn mate, we all love to neg jv, hell all my 5 have gone to him today but i think your taking it a little far.

        • "OK, so itunes download vs audio CD. It's the same scenario - one costs less to supply than the other, so one is cheaper."

You have to be careful with these sorts of statements. Very often the physical copy isn't more expensive. The music example for instance, I've purchased stacks of physical CDs that were cheaper than what was on iTunes. Video games too often are no cheaper depending on the publisher. In many cases there is far less competition when it comes to digital purchases if you need a particular item.

Cheaper delivery method does not necessarily mean a cheaper purchase for consumers.

Because time is money, why wake up at 5 am in the morning waiting for your download when you can pop in store @8am and get it done quicker.

Also my internet speed is crapola.

      • Also… people are forgetting that windows 8 will be released at 0.01 EPS ( American time..

So windows.com will start selling windows 8 pro upgrade for $39.99 on Saturday!! 27th here in Australia

        • i see so better off getting it 1 day ahead thx :)

      • +5

wake up at 5 am in the morning waiting for your download

to each their own… i don't usually sit around watching my PC when downloading, i just let it happen in the background…

        • +1

Wake up at 5am? … try 11pm midday on a Saturday for Eastern pacific time ( America )

We get it when America hits 0.01am on the 26th …
Saturday the 27th!! you can start downloading it from MS.com

        • +8

5am is understood t be in the morning, so no need to mention that, but since when is 11pm midday?

        • -2

          midayish lol

        • +2

          midayish lol

11pm is pretty far from midday. ;)

        • thats a matter of interpretation.. but anyways sorry that was meant to be AM not PM

      • and i'll be snug as a rug fast asleep, content with the knowledge that my trusty ubuntu installation is keeping me safe from all the bad people out there

        • You must be one of those bugs (from a rug) thats been livin' in Windows since the 80's…

    • so how is $18 more, a bargain?

Because it's normally $40-50 more if you want a hard copy. You have to compare prices between physical copies, not digital to physical.

What I read in the paper is that you can purchase a digital upgrade copy for $40, or a disk version for $90.

This is only $18 more, instead of $50 more.

      Troll somewhere else.

    • +1

lol, its just not ozbargain unless jv's first post gets severely downvoted

  • +1

Hard copy is better if you need to boot from disc if your PC craps itself ;)

    • +1

After buying the hard copy from a store i will be putting it onto a 8GB super fast usb3.0 memory Stick for faster install on my SATA6 SSD then a slow arse oldschool DVD

      • +1

You still have to wait for the slow arse DVD to rip and then move it across to your stick. Probably quicker to install by DVD.

        • +1

it will be quicker with DVD if you will never need to reinstall it ever again :) or on another machine

      • +19

Awesome, I will be spanning it across 9,717 5.25" floppy disks to install on 342 10MB Hard Drives on my super fast IBM XT.

        • Dude! Nice rig :)

        • Thanks man - the sucky thing is paying for 3-phase to run it…

      • it took me less than 5min to install Win8 with USB3.0 and SATA 3 SSD ;)

    • +1

once you download, you have a copy to re-install from…

    • +8

You can easily make a hard copy from the ISO, personally I would prefer a USB 3 Flash drive, it installs to a SSD in a, well, flash!

      • -2

I see what you did there…

    • That's actually not that relevant anymore (in most circumstances). Win 8 now has a Refresh/Reset option http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/01/04/refresh-and-reset-your-pc.aspx.

Basically, Refresh keeps your personal data (My Documets folder etc) and Metro apps and then re-installs windows. Reset removes your personal data and re-installs windows. All of that is performed from a separate partition on your HDD which means that you do not require a disc to format your PC anymore.

Windows 8 also supports creating a bootable USB drive as well.

  • would it have been too much for the upgrade version to be called "windows 8 upgrade" and the standalone one to be called "windows 8". whats this pro and pro pack gibberish..
would also appear HN website is making a hot mess of this.

  • Kinda bugs me the best pricing I've seen for a Windows release is for the one that interests me the least. Makes the $400 launch price for XP Pro or Windows 7 Pro upgrades so much more retrospectively painful.

    • +1

If they tried to charge $400 for W8, I think W8 will die a quick death. There's already a lot of sceptics of W8 who are afraid of change. Charging them $400 is going to make their decision to skip W8 even clearer.

  • Do people really want Windows 8, heard nothing but bad things.

    • I think anybody thats into PC's will get it
But the average user will steer clear for a while
Myself Ill dual boot, and fall back onto Win 7 if I have any issues
      with current programs etc
I am sure Ill like win 8 once I figure out the layout

    • +10

I'm really enjoying Windows 8, and it's not even the final version. I was dual booting Windows 8 and Windows 7 while I waited for some driver issues to be sorted, but now that they're fixed, I have no use for Windows 7. It seems slow and messy now.

The W8 interface took a little getting used to, but now that clicking/hovering in corners and right clicking to access menus is second nature, I find it quite pleasant to use :)

      • Same here!

      • Same here

    • +1

I personally think it's brilliant. But then again, I'm patient and don't mind change as long as it is progressive, which Windows 8 is.

  • What i want to know is will the xp or vista retail key i use as upgrade proof be able to still be used?

I know i will get a new windows 8 key with the pack.

Mr MS will my old key still work on other home pcs?

  • +5

Just make sure you get the Win 8 Pro upgrade and not the Win 8 Pro Pack because the Pro Pack will only install from a previous version of Windows 8.

    • +1

lol i think we will see some unhappy buyers who didnt read the fine print on this one

      • How many people don't have windows already? :)

        • Not many people have windows 8 "already" .. the fine print is … Win 8 Pro Pack will updated a previous version of.. wait for it .. WINDOWS 8 !!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

        • Oh the OP didn't update the main link.. in his description is the link to the actual upgrade:

          http://www.harveynorman.com.au/homepage/microsoft-windows-8-…

  • Might be stupid question but is this different to the upgrade offer ($14.99 win8 pro) for notebooks that were purchased recently?

Im eligible to buy 2 copies and they say I can buy physical copies for more.

    • +1

The 14.99 offer is only for people who bought their computers in the last few months.

This upgrade is for anyone who bought windows since 2001 (XP onwards).

      • So its basically the same thing then.

        Thanks eug

        • syl… you register with MS upgrade offer to get the $14.99 upgrade on your laptop of desktop pc purchased in the last 2 months …

you need to register and they will then "ALLOW you to buy the win8 pro upgrade for $14.99 from the Microsoft website on the 27th Saturday ( 26th in America )

        • They say it's a upgrade version but from ms site, they say I can do a clean install.

Thought a clean install means no previous windows installed in pc.

Want to know if I can install it on my desktop instead :-)

        • You can do a clean install. I did that with my Win 8 Pro Upgrade. Interestingly it didn't ask for evidence of a previous version of Windows. Hmm.. maybe the VLK version is different.

Guys - register now - I highly doubt they will ask for receipts or photos to prove you have a "recently bought" Windows 7 laptop.

UNSW Kids enrolled in Comp courses: check dreamspark, you can get 2 win8 "debugged" keys (whatever debug/checked edition means) + 2 win8pro keys, add both 32bit + 64bit to cart, they'll scan out as different products but I'm pretty sure the keys aren't bit-specific.

        • It asks for my Windows 7 product key:

        • +2

Mine didn't ask me.. just went straight to Confirmation.
Not sure, may have something to do with the purchase date.
          EDIT:
Here try copy what I put in here, the model, place of purchase, date of purchase:

          http://imageshack.us/a/img547/4152/part2l.png

        • The one I did a few days ago didn't either. Hmm.

  • For a Clean Install, Say newly built Pc, what would be the best version to buy of windows 8?

    • Best version would be the upgrade for $58 … win 8 pro …. Try and find a Legit winXP/Vista/7 Serial number from somewhere either from the trash PC's that people place out on the street or a friend with lots of Legit copies…. you can install a fresh copy of win8 from the win8 pro copy that is on special here~!

Will you forgive me if I buy the lumia 920 ? ;)

        • u need to fix the link to the Windows 8 Pro.. and take it OFF the upgrade pack! ASAP before some people mistaken that for an upgrade from XP/vista/7 that it Clearly is NOT!

  • +2

Yeah the OP has linked to the Win 8 Pro Pack which is not the upgrade from Windows XP, Vista or Win 7. It's the Windows 8 standard to Windows 8 Pro update pack. So don't be going buying that if you don't already own Windows 8 standard. I can see there's going to be a lot of disappointed people who have accidentally pre ordered the Pro Pack when they don't even have Windows 8 standard.

Here is the correct link to the Win 8 Pro upgrade

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/microsoft-windows-8-pro.html

    • The OP has that in the description. Dunno why the main link hasn't been changed.

  • Watch out people, the version in the link "This version upgrades existing machines with Microsoft Windows 8 to Microsoft Windows 8 Pro." You need this one if you have windows 7 installed http://www.harveynorman.com.au/microsoft-windows-8-pro.html according to the HN website

    • Yeah a lot of people are going to be heading home from HN only to be finding their Win 8 Pro Pack is not upgrading from Windows 7. A lot of disappointments happening. They don't read the fine print.

The Win 8 Pro upgrade is in a dark greyish box. Win 8 Pro Pack is a blueish box. Don't get them mistaken.

  • Has anyone found a good price on the OEM copy yet? Ive seen it on few computer shop sites for about the $140-150 mark for pro OEM.

Dont usually like getting the upgrade but its pretty steep jump for OEM

  • Unless the release a service pack that removes the Metro, and restores the interface back to exactly how it looks in W7 with small tweaks, W7 might be the last OS I use. I'm not sure what I will do when W7 stops being supported and games require W8+ to run.

    • +2

"W7 might be the last OS I use. I'm not sure what I will do"

Live as an amish in an amish paradise…
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOfZLb33uCg

      • Wait until windows 9 comes out?… or move to the Evil Apple.. or friendly Linux.. people out there are still using windows XP and happy to continue to use it for another 10 years

        • XP served me well as my primary OS from 2001-2009, so it's easy to imagine Windows 7 as my main OS through around 2017.

        • +1

Wait until windows 9 comes out?

Windows 9 is not guaranteed to be any different from W8. They might take the Metro and build on it further.

Let's be realistic. Windows 8 will sell no matter how awful it ends up being. Vista was much maligned but it outsold even XP. W8 will likely outsell W7. There are more PCs out there now than there were 4 years ago. The people who boycott W8 will be the ones who don't normally pay for the OSes anyway, so they don't matter much to MS's decision making.

MS will think, hey W8 sold well. Everyone must have really embraced the new interface. We'll keep it for W9 then.

or move to the Evil Apple

I'm skipping W8 because I don't want to get used to the new interface. So why would I want to get used to an even more different interface in OSX or Linux?

people out there are still using windows XP and happy to continue to use it for another 10 years

It's not supported anymore. A lot of games require Vista and above. Also, no DX10 or 11 support. The same will happen to W7. MS will make DX12 require W8 to force an upgrade.

  • OP .. you need to fix the link ASAP… if people buy the pro upgrade pack they will be very unhappy when they cant upgrade at ALL!! as its only for upgrading from Windows 8 .. to windows 8 pro .. not winxp/vista/7 to win8pro
