Been looking for a security camera that doesn't need a subscription and found this.

Eufy also has a similar camera on sale at JB for $183 but this seems better value with a microsd card slot.

  • Can't really recommend the Reolink cameras, the outdoor one I'm using currently starts recording way too late when someone/thing is moving in front of it.

Are yours battery powered or plugged/PoE? I have no issues with their products that are plugged in but battery-powered ones are not as good.

      • +1

It's battery powered with their solar panels. Also had issues with their versions with flood lights, two died within a month and they sent me replacement ones both times.

Decided to change to the non flood light version and haven't had issues since, except for the movement recording not working properly. Which makes it a bit useless.

        • Are you going to switch to another security camera brand/company? Missing out on the first several seconds of each recording sounds awful

          • @OzBoganYeah: Is swann a decent brand?

            • @ATTS: No. I have Swann cameras as well. They're terrible

              • @0 0 0: I see thanks

What are a decent brand ?

                • @ATTS: I don't think I can recommend any battery cameras for critical security needs. As a visual deterrent and a backup camera they're ok.
Get something that is mains powered and supports 24x7 recording.

Chinese companies are the best at surveillance because they've perfected recording the entire Chinese population for the govt. But obviously if you value your privacy you'll need to set up firewalls and VLANs to mitigate data leakage and only have local recordings.

Maybe Swann is ok for some but I haven't heard anything good about Swann.

                  • @0 0 0: Oh you mean record DVR to local hdd and is poe ok aswell

Oh is there firewalls on security camera aswell

Oh local you mean to hdd rather than cloud

                    • @ATTS: Yep best to record to local storage whether that is MicroSD or DVR HDD. Firewall rules set up to block inbound or outbound data to and from the cameras or DVR. But only if you're paranoid or have your cameras inside the house. Mine are all outside or in the garage so I don't mind

        • Have you tried changing the sensitivity settings and movement monitoring mask in the webgui/app?

No issues with my POE floodlight and doorbell

          • @NotaDeal: POE devices are mains powered and won't have as much lag if any at all

            • +1

@0 0 0: The Reolink PoE will even record/save 15 secs before the motion detection. So even if the detections is slightly delayed you don’t miss anything.

            • @0 0 0: Technically they are ethernet powered :)
I imagine what you mean is that any camera connected via ethernet would have less lag then wifi. As you can buy PoE power injectors, there still could be some use cases where someone uses cat5 with an injector just for power but use wifi for connectivity(Ive witnessed this before).

Also for those asking about offline /cloud storage, reolink have a handy FTP upload feature. I have mine set up to upload any motion events to my NAS running an FTP daemon in 4k HD, but set the in app streaming and sdcard saves to LoFi. This seemed to address any lag issues immensely as I use the app only for previews, if I need to a HD copy, I just grab it from the NAS.

    • Have you tried quick sand or hedges

    • +1

Agree my Argus 2 solar is very poor motion sensor.

    • +2

Battery cameras are all likley to be like this because they only record once motion is detected using the PIR sensor. They can't record continually because the camera sensor uses too much power and would drain the battery. Thus you won't get the pre-recording that hardwired cameras do.

  • I was interested in solar powered floodlight cameras and there's 2 people here who say they've had issues. Yikes. Guess it's time to look at other brands

    • +2

Any battery / solar models by any company will have a delay in recording to save battery.
The cables models actually buffer last 15secs of recording so when a motion is detected it actually starts 15secs before the detection.
Battery / solar models don’t do this as they power only the motion sensor and start the camera only after motion is detected, hence the delay. Other brands of battery cameras have the same issue.

  • I concur. I have 5 or 6 Argus 2 cameras and one died. Warranty process was impossible so I binned it. Also have 2 lumus cameras. There is a lag between recording and motion detection but I believe most cameras have this issue regardless of brand unless they are mains powered and do 24x7 recording. I'm much happier with my two Imou cameras which do 24x7 recording but occasionally need a reboot.

  • lol and they're flogging them for $220… must'nt be ozbargainers: :)

  • Does anyone know if the PIR sensor for Argus 3 Pro is better than Argus 2? I also have the issue of recording way too late for my Argus 2. If the Argus 3 is just as bad, there is no point in upgrading it as I will still miss the first few seconds.

    • Yea. It’s better. I found it triggers at about 10% movement in the frame. You will always miss the “start” on any battery camera.

  • +1

I have a few of these and believe they are definitely worth the money. If your sensor is triggering too late, you may need to reposition your camera. I will be purchasing more because of this deal.
