Motto motto app is now only giving a free iced peach tea for birthdays instead of gyoza+drink. Sad times.

    • they keep giving me free ramen and dumplings for some reason

      • Ive had a few chicken karaage's in the last few months, but usually used to give out a birthday meal but not this year (or anymore?)

        • Damn! The 5-pc Gyoza and LLB was my favorite birthday meal!

Someone remember to take a photo of the line

  • $2 pool + $1 Ramen …… weekend sorted!

  • The worst ramen, can't compare to Brisbane's two best ramen spots: Hakataya and Taro Ramen.

    • Hakataya and Taro are meh. The best one is Bepin in the city.

    • youre joking, right? taros is bottom of the barrel trash. motto motto is mid. hakataya is sometimes decent. there are sadly no 7/10 or better places in brisbane

      • Why is Taros objectively bad?

They seem to put in effort with the cooking by the looks of things, bowl presentation is above average too.

        • I’d like to know this also

Taros has been my fav in ascot, liked beppin but wasn’t a huge fan. Haven’t tried haktaya

Is there anything better than that? Nothing compared to the real deal over in japan unfortunately

Nothing compared to the real deal over in japan unfortunately

It depends… Ramen shops are very common in Japan & vary greatly in quality. So some can be crap! It's a quick cheap meal for most Japanese. Originating from Chinese living in Yokohama.

Regional differences mean Ramen flavours & presentations vary across Japan.

So Foreigners who have eaten Ramen in only a region of Japan, may think that is how all ramen should be.

With Fusion cuisine, Ramen has moved upmarket (eg 'World’s First Michelin-starred Ramen eatery – Tsuta'), with flavours & ingredients foreign to the origins of more basic Ramen.

My introduction to the complexity of producing good traditional ramen is Juzo Itami's 1985 film "Tampopo". Described as a "Ramen Western" (after "Spaghetti Westerns" of the time), it's a comedy dealing with life, food & sex…
Highly recommended. Shows how good traditional ramen should be.

Hakataya Ramen is a chain from Western Japan. It's main ramen is Hakata style (Tonkotsu slow cooked pork bone broth) from Kyushu region. Set up here in Brisbane & Gold Coast. Expanding South.

Found the small stores here are similar to those in Japan & taste was similar. For me, a taste & memory of Japan.
But the counter style eating may not suit some diners - expecting a more upmarket restaurant experience!
Occasionally offer free Ramen to members via their app!

Motto Motto is an Aussie chain originating in Brisbane. With input from a Japanese chef, it is designed for local tastes. It's OK.
Has offers for members on their app. (Have eaten many of these $1 Ramens!)

Never eaten in Taros - nearest store was empty each time I visited. Not what I am looking for.

In Japan, Ramen shops are usually tiny & crowded. It's part of their appeal. Not like the restaurants here.

@INFIDEL: Where does it say its a chain store from Western Japan? All i can see its Australian as well. At least I have never seen Hakataya in Japan.

Hakataya used to be our favorite when their only store was in Surfer's Paradise. But since they opened a branch in Sunnybank, they have diluted their soup to suit local taste as well as many non Japanese find that original Japanese taste too thick and too rich giving them heartburns.

Even since they diluted the soup we have never gone to Hakataya anymore. My wife is Japanese and she knows. In fact, she prefers motto motto more than Hakataya now.

I agree Taro suck. We went there after reading raving reviews and recommendation by Korean friends. It was tasteless, so dont know why people giving it raving reviews.

Of course we maybe a bit strict as we know all the good ramen shops in Tokyo that locals go. We don't need English menu and are happily ordering in Japanese.

              • +2

@Kaomichael: I unfortunately cannot agree on your opinion of taros. I have friends from Japan that I work with and also a friend who is from Korea, and taros is one of their most rated. I think ultimately, at the end of the day, the places just come down to your own personal preference and tastes. My ideal tonkotsu may not be yours. So a lot of things can only be mere suggestions to try, if you like it you like it, if you don’t, well you move on and don’t go back again. I’m not going to be butt hurt about it, but I tell most to at least try taros and a few others in bris, as the ones on the Sunshine Coast in my opinion are terrible. Westernised with no flavour, to my palette anyways!

              • @Kaomichael:

Where does it say its a chain store from Western Japan?

Hakataya used to list all stores on its site when it first opened here - including those in Western Japan (near where Tonkatsu Ramen originated).

                From overseas version of site:
                Shop Location
Hakataya, which has many stores in Japan, also has 10 stores in Australia.

                Hakataya Japanese stores

I have never seen Hakataya in Japan.

If you don't travel in Western Japan, you won't see their stores.
ABOUT Nagahama Ramen Hakataya'' is a ramen restaurant that operates mainly in Hiroshima Prefecture.

On travels, I like to mainly eat the food of the region.
I've spent most of my many long travels a long way from Tokyo! Often hitchhiking in remote & rural areas🎏
It's an easy way to meet locals - to be shown around their favourite spots, & share food🍜
Shared a couple's smoked horse meat & taught them to Tim Tam slam with their drip coffee, on a mountain trail through the unique & ancient forests on Yakushima.

Agree, the broth was much thicker & tastier when they first started here. From memory they stated it was slow cooked for 30 hours. Now seems very watered down.
Guess it's cost cutting & adapting to local tastes. Sad. Now only go for the freebies.

              • @Kaomichael: Sunnybank Plaza is the original store. They opened Surfers Paradise many years later.

Sunnybank Plaza still has the best broth. Indooroo and the city are a little weaker. The free extra noodles makes it good value IMHO.

Taros in the city has always been bit hit and miss for me. Sometimes excellent, sometimes bad. It's just not consistent and the value proposition isn't there considering the price.

                • @flagger: Nope. Surfers Paradise was the original. Why? Because after I married my Japanese wife in 2006 we have been looking at a good ramen store. In BNE at the time was the crappy Top Noodle only, a chair store by sushi train. The noodles were all stuck together as a lump.

We asked the Japanese hair dresser in Surfers (where the old ANA hotel was) and he recommended Nagahama Ramen Hakataya. It was an instant hit and we drove to surfers many times just to eat their ramen.

Then one day on Nichigo presss we saw an ad looking for helper in Hakataya in Sunnybank. We wondered could they be openning a branch. We were really excited as we dont have to drive all the way to surfers just to eat ramen. It was good initially in Sunnybank, but deteriorated throughout the years.

Trust me, I know. We have seen the rise and fall of Hakataya. We dont go there anymore.

                • @flagger: I tried Hakata in Chermside and it's horrible. The broth is so stinky as I think it's not fresh. I have never taste a bitter broth before

            • @INFIDEL: Thanks for the response, but yes hit and miss in Japan for sure, but I’d rather base Australian ramen on Japanese ramen more so than their own take on it, as a lot of Australian ramen places are average, with gluggy and stuck noodles, not what I’m looking for, or no real creaminess to their tonkotsu. As for your response to taros. The ascot store, every time we go always has people, and if anything most nights it is full, I have tried the cbd one and whilst I did like it, I definitely preferred the ascot store in comparison. There is a ramen store in fortitude valley which I thought wasn’t too bad, and another down towards the exhibition centre as well. But almost all stores regardless can be hit and miss some days

          • +1

@Discoaus: As the discussion goes on we still don't have an answer as to why Taro's is objectively bad. Here's what I know is right about Taros:

            1. The egg is actually jammy and has umami. I've never had a bad egg before.
            2. The soup is full of sticky collagen indicating time and effort was spent in making the soup.
            3. The pork belly and chicken is infused with other flavours and not plain.
            4. The noodles are handmade and has some bite to them.
            5. A monthly special, they're not afraid to experiment. Their lamb ramen was very tasty.

What's wrong? - Too expensive and small portions.

            • +2

@Bunnyburger: I actually couldn’t agree more with you. Of all the eggs I have tasted in the ramen shops I’ve tried throughout Brisbane and Sunshine Coast, they had the most consistently good tasting eggs. Some were too strong of the soy or the marinade they used, or they just weren’t a nice egg. I absolutely love their Chashu, enough that I ordered some of their 200g take home packs for my chest freezer as I love their diy ramen kits when I don’t feel like travelling down to taros. And yes, the specials have been nice. The Hawaiian was an odd one as I feel it was very overpowered in garlic flavour, but my favourite has been the Makanai, the one where they have 2nd grade noodles at a larger portion, more soup broth, and the chunky ends of the chashu, which I feel is sometimes better than the original pieces. It’s always my go to if they have it there!

  • After paying for parking etc Would be cheaper to go to my local ramen place.

Think you missed the point of this $1 Deal!!

The Deal is about cheap Ramen in Brisbane.
Hakataya Ramen occasionally has free Ramen!
For many on Ozbargain - that's their standard!

Consider the costs of travel, accommodation, etc. Even getting to the airport here will cost so many times the cost of this Deal.

Ramen is traditionally a quick, cheap, tasty workers meal. In Japan, usually eaten at the crowded counter. Taste & presentation varies by region.
A different & totally enjoyable experience.

Very different to the more refined Ramen served at Tsuta restaurants in various countries!
But then there can be a 2 hr wait to be seated in Tokyo Tsuta! The opposite of traditional Ramen!

I prefer (Kyushu style) Tonkotsu Ramen (slow cooked pork bone broth). Rather than the soy sauce Shoyu Ramen served @Tsuta.
"If you’re craving milky tonkotsu (pork bone) ramen or hearty miso ramen, Tsuta might not do it for you."

And why that particular Tsuta restaurant in Singapore - there are 4?
The original is in Tokyo, before expanding to other countries. Lost the Michelin-star in that process, & into instant noodles for 7-Eleven!

Certainly will try it when visiting, as long as the wait isn't too long.

With Australia being such a large country, and population highly concentrated into capitals, would it be worth having deal locales marked with the capital city rather than the entire state?
(tongue in cheek: paying $100 in petrol to get to Brisbane only to find out the measly 400 $1 are already sold out isn't going to be a deal for the vast majority of Qld.)

    • Hey, I had the same thoughts. I tried to include it so that it reads as [Bris, QLD] but I think they changed it back to just [QLD].

Arrived 15 min before started - 100+ in queue
Tasty Free Snacks brought to us while waiting.

Served @11:20 in take away container.
They estimated 150 served by then.
    Still 100+ in queue.

I was about 10 minutes ahead of you in getting my noodles 👋 (and pretty sure I was seated on the table next to @ilyhu!)

      • I thought I recognised you!

  • Queue was crazy, even 30 minutes before deal began

    • I read elsewhere that one person was there at 9:30 (before a proper queue formed, but 3rd in line)

      • 👀

  • Is it still available?

  • +2

OOS by 12.30pm. Got the $1 voucher to be used on another day. Still accepting regular orders tho

    • I think I saw you yesterday

      • Were you the girl sitting in the corner?

Was first in line with my friend. Really impressed by their speed and quality of service. It was, by far, the smoothest special deal opening I've experienced.

The popcorn scallops and water they regularly handed out to those in line, along with having the $1 ramen available as takeaway was just above and beyond.

    • What time did you get there?

      • Had plans to catch up with a friend anyway, so arrived around 9:17am for the agreed upon 9:30am meet up.

    • +1

I'm sorry you already used to Australia's customer service from hell. While in Japan these thing is the standard

      • I'll take what I can get haha. Did really enjoy my time in Japan though!
