  • Not the best price but close enough. Haven't really been too many good deals on Sony stuff in the last few months so this is probably about as good as you can expect atm.

I bought mine from Sony for $2629.20 with 10% CR in early November but don't remember where I would have price matched that from.

I noticed last few months, the 10% CB was capped at $200, the 8% CB capped at $250. Go figure….

  • Cashrewards don’t honour cashback on price matched items

    • Not in the terms + I've done it so ¯ \ _ (ツ)_/¯

    • Care to elaborate? My latest approval from them for a price matched item from Sony came through in mid-January.

      • They didn’t honour mine due to the price match… guess I got unlucky

        • Ah well I guess its not reliable either if yours didn't come through. When did you place your order? My one was in November.

    • My cashback on price matched A7iv may last year has not been honoured and still write pending despite numerous complaints.

    • Mine was declined too

    • you should go fight it if you followed the terms

  • These look like a pretty good camera. I was looking at some images from an earlier model owned by a family member and it had impressive dynamic range. Trouble is all my lenses are for a Canon SLR.

There's Sigma adapter to fix this problem. The only problem I've been told is lower AF performance as the adapter is busy translating things between the body and lens.

  • Going overseas to Egypt bit of a novice keen to get into photography can someone suggest a few lens that would be good to go with this body?

    • +2

Enjoy your trip to Egypt! watch out for scams, apparently it's worst-of-scams central.

It's hard to recommend lenses as it's personal and subjective. I personally pair mine with the 40mm f2.5 and 24mm f2.8 during my travels but if you can't be bothered with primes, then the 20-70mm f4 is my pick.

You can also try the 35mm f1.8 for travel. I also really like the 85mm f1.8 but it's less versatile but I like what comes out of this lens.

Starting out I always suggest get something familiar, close to what your phone default camera would look like, which is around 30mm give or take abit depending on the phone.

    • +3

20-70mm focal lengths are the most versatile for travel. Personally I prefer prime lenses because you can get faster (lower aperture) lenses for reasonable prices which just have a single focal length, 24mm, 35mm and 50mm are arguably the most common.

If it's your first pro camera I'd suggest getting the Sony 28-60mm f4-5.6 lens so you can get a feel for the lengths you like, good size for travel and landscape photography and potentially a Sigma 56mm f/1.4 for a faster portrait and street lens for that blurry background look (bokeh).

      • +1

        Sigma 56mm f1.4 is aps-c though…?

    • Personally, if I travel with 1 lens and want to keep it compact and light, I'd take a wide angle F4 lens to capture more of the landscape, city, architecture indoors and outdoors. I rarely shoot below F4, often F8 or higher when outside to get more objects in focus. For Sony full frame, I would recommend Sony PZ 16-35mm F4 G.

    • I went to Egypt 4 years ago and had nothing but the Sony 24mm f1.4 gmaster (about 1k). It worked very well for my needs. light, compact, discrete, wide, and fast. i mostly took pictures of landscapes, architecture, markets, and temples.

i think you would really struggle with a longer focal length (50mm plus) if you're going to go inside buildings. equally, a fast lens, f1.4 to f2.8, comes in very handy when inside dark spaces, which there's a lot of. valley of the kings is all underground and quite dark

so depending on what you're wanting to take photos of, I would recommend a fast and wide angle lens. I would also recommend the Sony 16 to 35 f2.8 gmaster. the first gen version can be had for about 1400. the second gen is nice but only of you have deep pockets.

also, be aware that guards at each temple will tell you no photos on your camera unless you pay them. it's a scam.

    • Y'know. This led me down a rabbit hole I would say don't bring your camera to Egypt.

Look up "Egypt travel nightmare" on YouTube or watch https://youtu.be/8LzuZrkEY18?si=hHm9aeSjkrp_wMrf and read the comments in the video

They might confiscate cameras at will for no reason and no clear rules, and the comments have a lot of ppl saying it happened to them too even when they're not a professional production.

  • Sony are no longer offering enticing cashback a with cash rewards, the good old days seem to be over. I guess I will be buying less gear from them now

Amazon just matched it for the same price LOL, if you don't want to wait for Sony price match or have discounted Amazon GCs to use.

    • thanks. ive been umming and ahhing about this for a while, just pulled the trigger here, no payment surcharge at least

  • Waiting for a good deal on Sony A7RV - someone mentioned they have been close to $4k in the past.

    • Yep, got mine for $3999… overkill on your external storage space tbh

      • How is that going? Looking at A7RV purely for the extra pixels (to crop when needed), dynamic range, focus bracketing …because I am too lazy with Photoshop/Lightroom. I still enjoy my A7IV …but the A7RV would do it for me.

        • Yeah I love it, properly brilliant thing. Just the crop mode for prime lenses alone is fantastic making a prime focal length super versatile. The video functionality over the A7RIV is welcome. Buttt the image quality vs an A7IV is negligible, don’t expect miracles moving to the RV other than improved AF and features. If you love cropping on and doing landscape or big prints you will love it.

  • What's the C in reference to?
The R was resolution and S was sensitivity IIRC.

      "compact"

Added code LUNAR80 that takes another $80 off.

    • cant seem to make it work? says code not valid

      • Me neither! I wrote to them about it but it should work.

EDIT: Just got a reply from the team - they say try again later today or tomorrow, they've reported the issue to their technical team.

Price matched with JB HiFi $2608 and paid with previously bought 10~15% discounted Ultimate/TCN gift cards 😀 Good deal for now

I just noticed the new Cash Rewards T&Cs for Sony store 🤨

    Up to 10% cashback
$250 cap per transaction. Ends 11:59pm AEDT 20/02. Excludes cameras, lenses and camera accessories

    • booo. that sucks. First welcome bonus, then stacking of price matching and welcome bonus, and now this.

      Cashback rates
      Standard Rate 10%
Cameras, Lenses and Camera Accessories 1.4%

      • Shopback is slightly better at a flat rate of 1.75%

    • :(

I believe these stores might be the reason Sony stopped offering cashback, as Digidirect wasn't making sales due to price matches.

Disappointed with Digidirect; not only have I bought lights in December, but they haven't even sent the orders yet.
