It's about $30 cheaper on the Samsung education store if you use the app and get the 5% off for a first purchase. Free delivery also.

    • +1

      Is 5% on top?

    • Is there an app for employee store as well?
Wouldn’t mind an extra 5% off too

      • Nope

      • $1189 - 5% = $1129 at Samsung Education.

The government portal is not available on the app, so no 5% discount unfortunately. I am no longer a student, but luckily being an ANU alumni gives me two anu.edu.au email addresses for life.

Was on the fence between this and the Sonos Arc. Finally decided to with this 2 weeks ago. Went on chat and got them to bring down the price to $1154. Soundbar is excellent for movies and TV shows. The vocals are heaps clearer than my existing Klipsch 2.1 setup. Not as good as the Sonos Arc or my Klipsch for music though. Overall a pretty decent system for the price for my needs. Using this with a Sony X90F 65" with no issues. Soundbar turns on and off with the TV.

    Been using this with my Samsung TV, amazing Q symphony;

    • Can confirm. Q symphony makes a big difference, everything sounds fuller. It's kind of weird without it.

      • Does it automatically connect to Q symphony if you have a Samsung tv?

Good deal my brother from another mother!

  • Enjoying this soundbar a lot. HN will price match and better, i combined with a tv purchase.

  • This or the HT-A9 (for a Sony television)?

    • I have a Sony A80K and ended up going with the Q990c. The HT-A9 needs the SA-SW5 sub, that package is over $2.5k and from the reviews isn't twice as good as the 990c. If the price of the HT-A9 bundle was under $1.5K I would have gone with it.

      • Can be had occasionally in total for ~$1.5k via eBay directly from Sony as refurbished / package damaged. Comes as new. Can recommend.

    • Ht-a9 is more expensive but far superior due to physical front L/R channels allowing a much wider front soundstage than nearly all soundbars, tuning allowing speakers at varying heights. HT-A9 is closer to actual 5.1 systems than soundbars

      • But ht-a9 doesn’t have physical centre channel

        • correct, and this soundbar doesn’t have physical left or right channels, it relies on virtualising from dedicated speakers.

  • This or the 930C which has come up sub-$700 a few times? Depends on room size?

    • Bought 930C in the last deal sub 700. Amazing value. This one will definately be louder than 930 given extra speakers and more power. However, i don't think it will be major difference for "Dolby" feature (which i have yet to hear on my one) height speaker hardly makes any differnece unless you got a room perfect with dolby specs.

in short, if you have a largish room, go with 990c. if yoi got medium to small room, go with 930c and save money. i have put 930c in a 40sqm room and can hardly go over 30 volume without waking neighbours:)

    • I'd definitely upgrade to this one if I can sell my 930B for around 500. Maybe I should try to sell it..

  • Waiting 990d, has hdmi2.1.

    • +2

As someone who has been staring at this product for too long, but is yet to pull the trigger… why is HDMI 2.1 important?

      • HDMI 2.1 supports eARC, which has more bandwidth than ARC, allows more data transfer to preserve the sound quality. I believe only eARC has Dolby atmos

        • My 930b has eARC from my S95b. Do you mean inputting to your soundbar then your soundbar sending eARC to the TV?

        • +4

          HDMI 2.0b supports eARC too.

The only reason you’d want HDMI 2.1 is if you played video games at 4K/120hz on your TV and wanted to connect your console to your soundbar and then to the TV. There is no other benefit at all.

          • @casualusercts: Why would you need pass thru? Plug soundbar into TV hdmi1 earc port. Plug gameconsole/pc into TV hdmi2 port

Make sure tv's set to earc. Win

Unless you're out of ports on your tv, why need passthru?

            • @Jay-rad: Yeh, I think it is a non-issue as well unless you have 5 devices you want to connect to your TV via HDMI.

            • @Jay-rad: My understanding, Many TV's won't process pass through the sound to the soundbar without compressing it.

              • @thedriver: Depends on the sound format /codec, and if your TV model support the audio codec to passthrough, into the Soundbar? eARC is lossless DTSX & DAtmos

Much like Bluetooth, the tv needs to support the audio codec, to pass it from device>tv>soundbar/speaker

If your TV doesn't support a specific codec, yes, plug device directly into soundbar, if soundbar support the codec.

But, now were talking plugging consoles/PCs, idk if pass through allows variable refresh rate to work on TV, or add any input latency, when plugging PC or console into a soundbar then passthru to TV.

Samsung's new HW990D has 4k120hz passthru, if anyone wants to wait and try it out.

goodread & lookup your tv model to check "Audio passthrough" support
                https://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/inputs/5-1-surround-audio-pa…

edit: yes you're correct, some tvs use compression

    • If you really need this feature, then yes. But I think also for a lot of people would be the sound listening to music is a lot better apparently on the new 990D version.

Will buy it (q990c) during clearance once q990d will be released. Hoping to buy it under $900 during clearance…

    • If its the same like Q990b, the cheapest was $800 but seems like no one actually received their orders. The next best thing is $999 which seems to be good and more realistic if you really want to get this soundbar

      • Thank you… ordered today from ebay “Appliances Online store” for $960 (1060-100 discount). Had some doubt about Samsung warranty via eBay. Had a quick chat with Appliances Online and they confirmed that it is protected with Samsung warranty. Delivery is tomorrow 😁

        • Nice buy! you won't regret it at that price. I bought Q990C last Black Friday at $1160 and still happy with the price.

  • This or Q800C as it is nearly half the price? Also Q990C is $1,148 at Appliance Central.

    • If you want rear speakers then 990

    • I got the Q800C for $620 the other day at hn

  • How does this compare to bose 900?

    • +1

The Bose doesn’t have a sub or rears. So for everything other than music the Samsung is vastly better.

  • JB Hifi will price match and add additional year warranty.

  • does everyone have a samsung tv or hows comparability with LG?

Hdmi earc plug n play + read manual to configure speakers?

    • +1

It will be plug and play but each brand offers their own sync version. Samsung's called Q symphony which makes a massive difference

      • thanks. read the manual now. non Samsung tvs cant "connect over wifi", defaulting to baked in Bluetooth. reddit says lg tv with q990c is great so may as well try it myself.

        cheers

    • plays well with Samsung TV. Auto start and can use TV remote.

  • Thank you… ordered from ebay “Appliances Online store” for $960 ($100 discount was showing for me). Had some doubt about Samsung warranty via eBay. Had a quick chat with Appliances Online and they confirmed that it is protected with Samsung warranty.
