Bula Fiji! This airline (and destination) is where we went for our honeymoon, and really liked the airline (whole crew signed a card and bottle of champagne for us). They've pivoted since the pandemic, being more flexible with fares and offering carry-on only, which for the most part is all you need for Fiji!

They're also flying the modern 737-Max 8 planes (pause for jokes, no, the 'door' flying off was a 9).

Don't forget a hotel!.

    Fiji is prohibitively overpriced these days.
    Resorts, transfers, food - just no.

    Better go someplace else.

            @Sapper50: Auckland has Sydney/Melbourne prices to be sure, but pop to the regions or the south island and there can be really fair prices to be had along the way. Subject of course to the AUD/NZD exchange rate.

            @Sapper50: Just give Queenstown a miss. Or stay someplace else and prepare your own meals. I went early November when it wasn’t school holidays and even then the best deal was paying $40 for a pizza.
            Rest of it is alright, all things considered.

        Fiji is very very expensive and that is a fact.
        You must book for a hotel with restaurant or a resort and when you dine in, prices are prohibitive so go to Queensland!

            But in my case Bali or Thailand are still a much better experience and cheaper.
            Last year I was looking for a one week holiday in Queensland with a relative, rent a house (cheaper than hotel), food, entertainment and car rent, it cost double than going to Bali including the air ticket.
            In addition, in Bali they welcome you with a sincere smile!

              @billadm: Been to all three with kids… bali, thailand and Fiji. Fiji was the best by a long way. You get what you pay for. Nusa dua a close 2nd.
              Already looked up qld and nothing compares except some ultra exclusive islands.

      You can easily book great accommodation outside of the resorts and very reasonably. Just don't head straight to the tourist traps.

          Just have a google.

          An easy way to spend a great week in Fiji would be to head down the coral coast and book the Beach House.

          Pretty good food, great coffee, awesome beach with lots of activities, accommodation ranging from cheap and basic to really nice.

          If you can afford to rent a car, lots of food and tourism options in close proximity too - head to Sigatoka, Pac Harbour or hell even down the Lami end. Otherwise taxis and local buses get you 90% of the way there.

          Other simple itineraries would be to do a custom trip to the Yasawas or Mamanucas, which have plenty of decent resort options with meals included.

          There are of course village / home stay options all over the islands which are fun too although maybe a bit adventurous for some.

            @OpenHand: Coral coast was awesome when I first went over a decade aco. The last time I went almost all the coral was bleached.

            I'd recommend the smaller islands for anyone interested in actual coral.

            Coral coast should be pretty cheap given how all the coral is dead.

          That really depends what areas you're staying in.

          Most of the coral coast is dotted with restaurants, particularly around the accommodation clusters.

          Ofc it's not the Melbourne CBD or something.

              The fresh food markets in Nadi, Suva and Sigatoka are incredible - all freshly grown produce and freshly caught fish so I have no idea what you're talking about.

          Disagree, I stayed on the coral coast with young kids and it was great. Food at the resort was reasonably priced as were two restaurants that were 5 min drive away. Sigatoka markets were excellent.

          I also love Bali and Fiji is definitely more expensive than SE Asia but I would happily go back. Sorry you didn't enjoy it.

      I went in 2022 and had a beautiful one week at the Yasawas. Literally the place to be for relaxation/do nothing.

      But yeah, it was expensive. I spent about $3K which mostly went towards the resort and ferry transport. I'm not in any hurry to return even with cheap flight deals.

      We flew out on their A350 and it was so comfortable. Came back on the 737-Max 8 and it was much less comfortable.

      Just been, I think the prices are so expensive because tourists are largely packed into small areas - Denarau Island, or the other resorts along the Western coast where you're pretty much forced into paying their prices. If you cook food yourself it's alright but restaurant food is all comparable to Australian prices. Thailand was way cheaper when I went recently - $2/3 AUD for a meal vs. $20/30 AUD in Fiji

      besides it being a relatively small island nation that imports a lot of stuff, they have over the last decade or so massively increased prices for tourists. The main resorts are all bundled together and they all take advantage of their trapped audiences and hence charge eye watering prices for food, drink and activities. You can venture out of this area but you lose a lot of services and need to be much more self sufficient.

        If you stay at one of the many resorts in Denarau, you can choose to go Ito the marina area where there are many restaurants to choose from. We had a very sumptuous meal and drinks at "Bonefish" and it was around $70.00 Aud. No need to eat at the resorts every night.

    Airfare is the only thing that is cheap about Fiji, everything else is way too expensive. Food, accommodation and diving. Diving is more expensive than AUS, very weird.

    Anyone with any experience dealing with BeatThatFlight (and probably Flight Network through BTF)?

    Looking at flights to Kuala Lumpur, will probably go with Batik/Malindo and it's around $600 cheaper for family if I do it through FN through BTF. Just wondering how safe and if it's worth the risk?

    Have a look at the breakdown of your airfare cost and you will see how Fiji government is ripping you off

    Also don't forget to factor in the ridiculous ATM fee they are charging $10. I would just write off this country from my travel list. Foods and everything there is so expensive as well as mentioned above.

      Yup the atm fee is unavoidable. They add it to the amount withdrawn so you cant get it refunded eg. by mac bank

        Macquarie Bank never refunded oversea ATM fee, ING was the only bank refund oversea ATM fee but ING has removed that feature last year.

    As someone who has been to both Fiji and Bali last year - 100% would recommend Bali over Fiji.
    Here is a list for why I think Bali is better value for money:
    - Fiji, at least the way I experienced it, was not particularly varied in terms of things you can do and see (understanding that this is just my own experience). I stayed in Nadi , and then on a resort.
    - Nadi is not somewhere I would recommend anyone staying for more than 2 days or so.
    - Bali has something for everyone - you can do a resort style for much less $$ than Fiji, or you can stay in a guesthouse for cheap and go sightseeing (waterfalls,rice terraces, temples, shopping etc.) with a private driver which will cost you about $60-70 AUD per day for 8-10 hours, or you can go do watersports (e.g. surfing lessons for approx $40 AUD for 2 hours, white water rafting etc. )
    - the food (and drinks!) in Bali are affordable, varied and delicious. The max I paid was approx $50 per person at a fancy restaurant (for food and non alcoholic drinks, in front of the beach at sunset with a great view) for something that would have cost at minimum $100 in Australia.
    - Fiji food was very underwhelming and expensive. I think the cheapest I had was about $25 per person at a very unfancy appearing restaurant (pizza), and it was very meh. Used tripadvisor to try to find the better restaurants in Nadi, tried a couple and was not impressed.
