Wow, this is a great price. I got it off Aliexpress late last year for around $510.

Note: Do not buy this if you want to be manually flying the drone. You put it in a mode, you confirm the settings, you press the button, it takes off from your hand, does the requested action while recording, then returns to you and waits for you to hold out your hand for it to land again.

It is very very good for taking somewhere scenic and deploying it for a quick stylish video or two, then putting back. It will fit in a handbag, but you'll want to get a protective carry case for it so it doesn't get poked and prodded by things in the handbag.

    Also:
    * Do not let it fly over water
    * Do not let it fly over a sudden drop in the terrain (i.e. a cliff)
    * Do not run directly under it when it is in follow mode, it will lose track of you and just hover there until you come back and it sees you again

    • What's flight time like?

      • Want to know too

      • I haven't personally run it down to the point where it requested to land, but they claim around 10 minutes-ish. I use it in short bursts mostly.

The only time you'd be doing extended flight is if you keep it in a continuous flight mode such as Hover or Follow, though. If you're doing short bursts like the other modes, it's only in the air for around 30 to 45 seconds at a time.

      • Do not let it fly over a sudden drop in the terrain (i.e. a cliff)

there goes my idea of using this for my hiking trip. :(

why wouldn't it fly over uneven terrain?

      • +1

Adding on why no over water?

        • +4

          No ETOPS certification

        • Unless.. you have power?

      • +4

From what I can tell, it uses optical downward censors so any uneven surfaces or surface with light dispersion (like water) can be problematic. When it encounters a problem, it will land…and if you have it over water or a sudden drop (cliff) well….

I'm disappointed in you for not making a hoverboard joke here and actually being helpful.

I was certain there was going to be a fourth point -

      • Do not feed after midnight

Great! I bought prior to Christmas and eligible for return till 31 Jan now it’s good to get some money back!!!

  • No way this is worth this much. Do yourself a favour and watch some YouTube vids

    • I liked it.. it is great as training partner

    • +2

That's why I said it is not for everyone. There are use cases where there is no better alternative for the price (i.e. DJI mini may not be suitable).
P.S. I also do have DJI mini and a bigger DJI as well. Each has its own use.

  • Follow a snowboarding run?

      • Do not let it fly over a sudden drop in the terrain (i.e. a cliff)

      Arrrrrrrrrrr… gh

  • +1

I'd rather getting a DJI SPARK or the first gen Mavic mini.

  • Nothing to tick for the discount. Expired?

I don't think these things are legal, especially when CASA cites 30 meters from people.

allowing you to enjoy the thrill of close-range shooting while ensuring safety for both adults and children.

    30 meters isn't close range.

    • You must keep your drone at least 30 metres away from other people

      And

no closer than 30 m to people — other than those helping to control or navigate your drone

Nobody is running around with a clipboard to fine you anyway.

Automatic and Intelligent Flight Paths: Experience hands-free flying with HOVERAir X1's pre-programmed flight paths, including Hover, Follow, Zoom Out, Orbit, Bird’s Eye, and more.

^^ You're not controlling it, it's auto fly.

        • +1

You can also manually control the drone to optimize the flying path and capture the perfect shot.

          ^^ You can control it.

DJI drones also have self flight modes.

          • -2

@Lucille Bluth: We are not talking abt DJI here though.
Let me guess, you use your phone to control the drone?

            EDIT

Nobody is running around with a clipboard to fine you anyway.

Did you really just type this? You should really stay away from drones altogether.

            • @[Deactivated]: It's relevant as both DJI and this drone allow you to fly these manually and in auto tracking mode.

              DJI is legal.

And yes this drone you can use your phone or pair with a remote control e.g. 8BitDo. Hence you will be operating it.

        • You're controlling it with where you place yourself. It's further abstracted from the device than flying by hand, but even that has indirect inputs you have no live influence over.

          • -3

@banana365: I know how "follow me" works, I just don't think this device is really something CASA would welcome if you intend to be doing a bunch of runs through the park where there are many other people or obstacles.
People should be looking at the better DJI devices, which have been put through their paces imo.

            • @[Deactivated]: They would have issues if you did that with a standard drone too.

              • -4

@banana365: DJI come with controller, this one doesn't and you need to use your phone right?
Did you see the video someone from Australia posted on Amazon's website?
                Isn't that against CASA rules?

The reason I question these selfie drones is, people don't pay attention to any of the regs till it's too late.

        • +2

I just checked the CASA site, and for the recreation purposes I could no longer find the rule that specify you have to be in direct control.
Speaking of which - on other drones you are not (mostly) controlling the flight directly. The drone makes adjustments to fight the wind, etc. Return to home is also not directly flown by the pilot.
Furthermore, you do direct the drone what it should fly and you also direct the drone to land with your hand gesture.
One should also look at the law intent. It is way different to send 2kg (or 7kg) drone far far away on its own, versus a 250g "toy" with protected propellers, and minimal maximal height to 2 - 10 meters away from you.

          • -4

@tm001: So if you have follow me enabled, and you're riding your bike, how are you to able to keep line of sight of the drone if it is following you and you're looking forwards?
What happens when you get close to other people and the drone just decides to keep following you?

    • I would probably not run it in close proximity to other people.
I might run in in close proximity to family and friends as long as they would confirm to me that they help me to navigate the drone.

I had an OG Phantom, and some other gear, I knew what it was to fly these in the early days.
I have seen people do some of the most stupidest things when flying, I witnessed 1 guy shut down power whilst he was still in the air.
Another guy telling me they fly their FPV DJI with no lights at night, I mean are these people so irresponsible that they want to cause an accident?
I am all for people having fun, but the safety aspect seems to be thrown as soon as they get these in the air.

        • I also had/have Phantom 4 and DJI Mini. Always been careful - even to the extent that I was worried to fly (especially after seeing some fly away videos).
The risk that a 2kg drone may fly-away on its own and hurt someone was scary (even when following all the rules).
The risk of this micro drone with the propellers enclosed and maximum height of 49 feet and minimum battery life is quite minimal. While I will still follow the rules, I will feel much safer, than with my old heavy DJI drone (or even than the mini with exposed propellers).
It is not suited for everything, but I would say 90% of shots I would do during my travel this will do.

          • -2

@tm001: Is 49 feet the max ceiling of this drone?
I can't remember what the Phantom weighed but am sure the batteries were 100 grams.
GoPro attached was about the same, then the gimbal weighed a bit.
I never went that high, used at local park but that was over 10 years ago.

CASA was pretty strict, even removing footage from YT because you needed a license as it was seen as profiting from footage that needed a commercial license.
This is what has stopped me from getting a Mini3, when I have rung CASA to find out if I may use footage that I have shot on YT, they told me, as long as I don't benefit from it, then yes.
So it was pointless, as I needed original footage to my original music.

Even CASA themselves could not give me a proper answer.

On que, the CASA police have arrived in the comments! Interesting drone, although I think you'd have to be pretty creative with editing to make this worthwhile. You can buy a fully featured FIMI X8 Mini drone (almost competes with DJI mini range) for around $550.
