Suggest Me a Fan

gday
in these hot days the kids suffer on their child seats as the front aircon struggles to help them cool down, aside from buying a second vornado 533dc to go with my first one, and a inverter off the car cig socket, does anyone have a suggestion for a fast refreshing fan with almost the oomph a vornado 533dc but maybe usb powered?

or has anyone bypassed the dc vornados ac->dc and replaced with cig socket?

Wind the windows down a bit?

    • yep we do that
      but

kinda sucks when there's traffic and the sun is coming into the window

kids are 4 and have three more years of cosy warm child seats

      • +1

kinda sucks when … the sun is coming into the window

Snap shades = windows down without the sun in. Cheaper options around, but these are good quality, easy to install and don't take up space or have difficult/bad attachment methods.

    • refrigerated neck bands from Aliexpress or the like…
eg $15 to $16 Temu: "Hanging Neck Cooling Fan Ultra Long"

A teaspoon of cement should fix that.

    • -1

      wot

      • +11

Ever heard the saying 'harden up' or 'harden up, buttercup'.

Cement gets mixed wet, dries hard. So it's kinda 'swallow a teaspoon of cement and harden up' sort of thing.
WARNING: Do not swallow cement or cement mix.

Instructions unclear. Just swallowed a teaspoon of cement. Please advice advise next step.

Generations of kids grew up just fine without aircon in cars at all. Nowadays people are complaining that the aircon isn't cold enough.

        • +5

I’m not sure about that. Those kids grew up into the adults of today, and they’ve certainly screwed things up pretty bad. So let’s not forget that chronic overheating can have some catastrophic long-term effects

    • +3

Should tell that to the people who keep buying SUVs because it's too hard to bend down to pull a child out of their car seat…

      • +3

and LOLcats after reading that SUVs typically have LESS storage space than the equivalent sedan - it's just imagination that the taller box has more space

so what do you get for that extra money for a tall box ?

less comfortable suspension - a yuppie acquaintance took me for a ride in his new Prado or somesuch over city streets and asked what I thought - I said "bumpy" - next time I saw him he had changed it for a new Mercedes sedan

and easy rollover - have you seen any of the many videos of a sedan hit by an SUV - the sedan stays flat, the SUV rolls over, sometimes many times - hey safety ! (or not)

ah, but the one thing you do get - is a feeling of aggressive superiority - looking down on other drivers in sedans - you can feel on top of the world - until everyone else is in an SUV - when you may have that sinking feeling …

and hey at the primary school pickup or backing out of your driveway you can run over and crush and kill a small kid without the inconvenience of seeing them beforehand ! (only after …)

and with front grilles at chest crush height for pedestrians or smaller cars, you can always have that winning feeling when you impact something softer or smaller - way to go with your big toy !

    • Magnetic window shades of some sort if you want to keep using the windows
    • there are some fans that attach to headrests
    • hand held fans
    • +1

headrest fans! wow i hadnt thought of those! good idea
we have magnet shades on the other car

      • Headrest fans are great - a few on temu (which are the same as the ones you find on amazon, but cheaper)

Just check the volts/watts and try find the highest you can find - should be 5-7w

    Fix your A/C

The ac is fine. but its 38 outside and there were no shady spots. takes a while to cool down.

on the other car there's second row cooling. once driving to somewhere the car said it was 48 outside. bom said 43.

all aircons at max+ kids sharing one vornado.

      this is Sydney!

      • +7

I was just in WA in 40+ degree heat with no air con issues. Now back in Queensland with mid 30s, also no air con issues. Either you have an air con problem, or the kids need to harden up. Can be as simple as a blocked cabin filter restricting airflow.

        • +1

ill check the cabin filter. good idea
          what car do you have?

          • +1

            @FoxJump: This was with numerous different vehicles, 2 rav4s, 3 different VW's.

      • Oh well, dont come to the rest of the country then! 41 here in Adelaide this week and people just deal with it. Cars are at least high 40s.

        • "41 here in Adelaide this week and people just deal with it."

Easier to deal with if the humidity is low as it would be in Adelaide.

Trouble is that Sydney humidity is much higher, so that it's much harder to deal with.

I could easily deal with 41ºC heat with low humidity.

          • @Gekov: Adelaide has been rather humid this summer. Comparable with NSW.

          • +2

            @Gekov: Sydney humid you say?

In Darwin and Cairns you are just walking into mist

      • +1

Move to Adelaide. 40 here is considered extremely hot. It hasn't been 40 yet. The weather app has been teasing 39 in the days ahead for a while now but it never eventuates. It's meant to happen Tuesday but we'll see…

    • +4

Some cars just have crap aircon. Holden Colorado's are shocking with very little airflow that never gets cold. We have a late model Honda that struggles in city traffic, but is ok when cruising on the highway. Toyota's generally have very good air-conditioning, so good that after a while you have to adjust it so you don't freeze even on a 40°C day.

      • +1

This is the answer. The only real solution is to upgrade the car. Anything else is going to have the efficacy of a band-aid on a bullet hole

      • +3

my Saab vents were so powerful, a female friend used it as a hairdryer once.

      • Check that your cabin pollen/air filter isnt choked. Many people unaware they even exist.

        • Some budget cars is not even fitted with a filter. Also some cars air don't go pass the cabin filter when put in recirculate mode. Only outside air is filtered. So sometimes it can be the heat exchanger fins that are blocked with dust.

    • Not always a solution i have a 2010 triton mechanic and 2 air con places have checked it over cant find what's wrong. Its okay for most days but you get a real hot one your better off just opening windows.

  • +3

If you go with neck fans they can also be used in their strollers

    • This

I was going to suggest neck fans, but luckily read the comments first.

As an older female with hot flashes, I can confirm neck fans are brilliant. Rechargeable, cool breeze where you need it, easy on, just hook round your neck and walk on. Just make sure you get ones with variable speed.

      • Can't go wrong at $12.99. They were a hot item for secret Santa/white elephant 2023.

  • Maybe something like any of these usb-c car fans that you clip/hang onto the back seat?

    Amazon here

    SuperCheap Auto here

    Autobahn here

Basically if you can find it, hang it, and charge it, great.

    • yes its max wattage is 40w so totally usb pd
internally its apparently 24v so .. close enough at 20v

I use This fan to keep cool while driving my Reliant Robin.

    • You could power the whole car with that.

    • Point it rearwards and double the speed, just don't point it sideways 😅

They suffering with the heat? In days gone by they would have had to wrestle with vinyls seats!

i use a towel over the leather seats.

    • +3

don't forget being branded by the metal seat belt buckle.

      • The amount of almost degree burns i'd get from these

  • +5

Edmunds Whirlybird on car roof, easy to install. Will add value when selling. This will lower the temp.

  • +1

I’d suggest you try to shade the rear windows as much as you can first. That will reduce the amount of radiated heat. Windows socks, tinting or even the Venetian blinds of the pre ac era. When you park the car leave a gap in the windows to let the heat escape. It will still be hot but bearable.

  • BCF have a bunch of car/camping/rechargeable fans…
    https://www.bcf.com.au/p/wanderer-12v-clip-on-fan/580615.htm…
looks pretty basic but cheap and functional? The rechargeable ones aren't that much more, maybe that would be more useful for your situation?
    eg https://www.bcf.com.au/p/altius-rechargeable-folding-fan-wit…

I don't have any of them, but bunch of options there anyway

  • Summer will go quickly. Get some ice packs, freeze them then bring it out when you are riding the car

  • -1

You can always try one of those solar powered window vents that circulate air when the car is not running. Eg: https://autobarn.com.au/ab/Autobarn-Category/Shop-our-Full-R… (not affiliated) or https://www.repco.com.au/car-seat-covers-car-accessories/int…

  • +2

What car do you have? Sounds like AC is not effectively cooling the car down. AC should still cool everyone off sufficiently 10-15mins after starting the car with the AC on lowest temp and blower speed at max. Compressor could be tired, low on refrigerant, blower motor weak, cabin filter blocked, AC mixer flap(s) not working properly etc etc.

Magnetic window shades in the back, sun shade for windscreen at the front - if you can be bothered using it every time does help reduce cabin temps.

Alternatively, get a modern EV and turn on the climate control 15mins before you get in the car using your phone app.

    • subaru xv

and yeah 15min itll probably be ok
but kids are in a squishy childseat so I'll just vornado it while that happens.

      • The back seat cooling in the XV and Impreza isn't the best, even with the AC on max.

If your XV is a model with a sunroof, try opening it and the front windows for the first few minutes of the drive while the AC kicks in. It's amazing how much hot air escapes out of the sunroof.

Another +1 for Snapshades for the rear windows as well.

  • Bigass

    • those are the best.i dont have a warehouse though

  • +1

    Vornado for sure

  • Get the AC unit inspected and serviced. At a minimum it'll need re-gassed and the receiver dryer replaced. Ballpark $400-500 bucks.

    • okiedokie

  • Not me sorry

  • Move away from direct sunlight. Always under cover parking Use sunshades on all four windows. Fix your aircon. Might not have enough refrigeration. Aircon up.

  • Get better aircon?
    Get better car?
    Get better kids?
    Get better.

  • 2 kids in car seats here. I have this style of clip on USB fan on the head rests pointing down onto the kiddos. Get a longer USB cable so you can tuck it away so you don't get caught up on it.

The battery is good as it'll keep running when you've turned the car off until you get them out of their seats

    https://amzn.asia/d/dduPrJD

  • Put kids in front seats, be a back seat driver, problemo solved!

  • ice cream, an esky full

  • +1

Let them watch videos of less fortunate kids. Watch them cool down instantly 🤪

  • Some mates had cars without aircond.

It was a struggle but we survived.

If parked int he sun, I suggest using a sunshade and running the car with open doors for a couple of minutes before putting the car in.

I saw a photo on the net the other day- https://i.redd.it/i6bve6xhjj8c1.jpeg I love it! Well I love that it exist, not to own.

Porsche and Ferrari would charge you for their weight reduction option on their GT3 cars.

  • Fan and … Only…

  • Spray bottle fans are awesome. Kids will love it too.

  • I was pleasantly surprised by the Dynabreeze I bought from Bunnings. I have put it up in the Rumpus and all of us can feel the breeze in that really large room when its running.

    • But can you hold a conversation with all that noise?

      • +1

Oh yes you can. it is surprisingly quite for such a large fan.

  • on a long drive the other day I was sitting on the sunny side and with a passenger option set the front air-con temp to lower than the driver wanted on the shady side

for the rear passengers I angled up the dashboard vents on my left and right to direct the cool air up and over my head to come down to cool the passengers behind - and after a while at full blast they asked for it to be turned down

this was on Sunday when it was 40C outside and we were comfy at 24-25C inside.

if that doesn't work, a cheap empty spray bottle of water can be sprayed over the skin for instant cooling with any air movement (dry off if/when you get too wet).

otherwise we bought hand battery fans in Japan for about $30 - I saw similar I think in Big W or DAISO the other day for closer to $10

    eeyago - $10.50 at Woolworths - get some of these - https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/277572

lastly thin white cotton cloth will stop radiant heat from the sun for passengers - ideally thin slightly gauzy that you can see through to not get tickets for obscuring vision, can be simply hung from inside with the top edge draped over the top of the rear passenger side window glass and held in place by simply closing the window - you could even try spraying that for a possible cooling effect - tho' I haven't tried that.

I drive a Caddy Life 7 seaters with 3 kids, there is no air vent in the 3rd row and the one who sat there raised the heat issue during hot days. I bought this battery operated fan with clip from Bunnings last month for $60.
    ebay

It has been working well, I sought after a clip one so it can clip onto the headrest. It is not available at Bunnings now. My alternative was a 12V cigarette connection but I am not a fan of cables running everywhere. JayCar

  • Let your car run with the aircon full blast for 3 minutes before you get into the car.

Some brands like holden and tesla allows your to do this with a remote.

    • I would love to turn on aircon remotely on my hyundai. Guess it's too old for that feature as it might need Bluetooth or simcard. My car has neither 😢

  • Move to tas

    • i love Tas.
but i need to live 2hrs from my place of work :(

  • Might I suggest the Barmy Army?

  • why not make your own rear seats vents, get inspiration from these DIY videos, requires little modification but it might be worth it..

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bU7cErbCS5M

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LewWxCHj-Ho

  • Get something like this:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CJFXJQF2?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_…

Charges with USB, has a battery which lasts ages on the lowest settings and the base doubles a big clip to attach it to things.
