  • Thanks OP, can these be upgraded to Win 11?

    • +2

      Can 100%

    • +1

While i dont doubt you can get win 11 on this there could still be a time where microsoft can block non supported hardware.

      • i didnt do anything manual i think. it just prompt me do you want to upgrade - hmm or i was thinking different machine?? sorry i got this exact deal 8 ago + old brain

      • But they probably won't. You just miss out on the extra fancy features like explorer tabs and dark mode task manager.

I am running Win11 on an SP3 for reference.

        • Just saying whats possible. I don't have a crystal ball that can tell what microsoft will or won't do.

          • @xoom: agree but MS didnt even do anything for ppl pirating the whole windows since Win 3.11 :D
just warning on the bottom thats it

            • @CyberMurning: Looks like microsoft is starting to block it.

              https://www.deskmodder.de/blog/2024/02/12/windows-11-microso…

Nothing has changed in the July 2023 statement. Really old CPUs are no longer supported. Bob Pony has now found out why. The CPUs need an instruction that is “POPCNT” calls. Without this instruction (which in SSE4.2 or. SSE4a is included) Windows 11 can no longer boot. This includes the Windows 11 kernel or the USB XHCI driver.

          • +1

@xoom: There would be massive pushback for the e-waste that would create alone.

            • @soymeat: You see what apple been doing with their stuff locking the parts out to their respective unit?

Much the same only worst in apples case.

    • I doubt there is TPM 2.0 in Surface Pro 5

      And I did some search

      • There are work arounds. Fairly easy to bypass.
        Probably get windows 11 on a 486.
        Just google it.

      • Plenty of devices that dont comply with win 11 requirements yet you can install it. Well for now.

    • +1

For anyone not wanting to use “workarounds” etc; the Surface Pro 5 (2017) is definitely not officially supported by Windows 11, and you will not get a prompt to upgrade. Windows 10 officially stops getting security updates late 2025.

  • +7

some insights when it was posted last time https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/774731

    • damn paid more without keyboard - so sad

      • +2

I've bought a couple of surface pros used… any included keyboard should be considered shipping package only and promptly disposed of. :vomit:

        • yep i got one second and it peels off after weeks.. yuckss

  • +5

Using one of these from the last deal for basic home office work- going extremely well.

    • Are you using the keyboard that came along with it? The comments right above seem to suggest it isn't good.

      • Yes, I am. And I haven't had any issues

  • +9

I highly doubt battery minimum is 80%, I got one last time battery only 69%

    • +21

      Nice

    • +1

      Same.

They could just stick to reporting battery cycles at this point.

    • -2

There have been different deals posted where the batteries % were stated lower than 80%

      • How long the battery would last for general browsing and/or reading pdt files?

        • +1

I get about 2 hours max from mine from the last deal. Battery health is all over the place and currently sitting at 63%.

          • @boxall: Was yours a B-grade (less than 80%) or A-grade (80%+) when you purchased it?

            • @bheart: A Grade was the only option and advertised as 80%+. Keyboard was a mess. They did look after me with a partial refund though.

Use it a lot, but did wish there was more battery life.

              • @boxall: I ordered from this deal A grade and received B greater as well :(

  • good way to store pass phrases digitally with bitlocker enabled and never connected to the internet

    • +2

      What's your redundancy plan?

      • +2

        Yolo

      • Metal punchhole plates.

        Oh digitally..

        Pics of metal punchhole plates?

Not sure how reliable cold storage on SP5 would be, someone will probably tell us we're doing it all wrong, 3-2-1 method etc.

Whoa ohhh, livin' on a prayerrrr

  • I'm ebay+ and it shows $185.09 for me. I suspect non ebay+ is $186.42.
gmo editing service at your service ;)

    • Fixed

  • What parts are upgradeable?
    Ram and ssd?

    • +5

      No

    • +2

SSD is only user upgradable on Surface Pro 7+, 8 or 9.

      RAM is soldered on.

  • Also great for playing retro games on.

  • Thanks man, had a notification setup after getting one for the wife last time.

  • Is a pen included?

    • no

    • Idk as a surface range fan imo the pens are overrated… windows just isn’t there yet for pen integration I think.

  • Pity no decent Surface devices in your store with 16GB of RAM.

  • Does this come with a type cover or just a normal keyboard?

    • I would assume with, per the post "Keyboards are used and will show some signs of wear or fraying."
And seller notes on the eBay page:
“Overall great condition with minor marks or scratches battery is tested to be minimum 80%. Includes keyboard - keyboard colours vary - condition may also so signs of use such as ware marks & fraying”

  • Thanks OP, bought 1

  • +1

    Do you have any 16gb?

  • +1

Just remember, it’s no longer supported by Microsoft

    https://www.neowin.net/news/surface-pro-5-and-pro-5-lte-are-…

    • You would still get windows updates, i.e security

      • Yep just not firmware or the like

        • +5

Upgraded mine to Win 11 on the last deal, just got a Surface firmware upgrade pushed to the device about a month ago.

          • +1

@TheFunkySalsa: Last support date is 15 Jan 2024 according to the article I linked.

            • @beatsntoons: Understood. Not too worried about it tbh, it's still going to get the usual Win 11 updates so not gonna sweat about it. Only paid $195 for it anyway so if it bricks it bricks.

  • +4

Don't need one yet bought, should reduce ozb browsing

    • now you can dual wield phone and surface pro on the dunny

  • -1

Thanks OP, great price for an impulse buy… Now to work out what to do with it.

  • +3

Good home assistant wall mount tablet if you can get it power.

    • Hmmmm, that's not a bad idea

      • +1

removable wall mount with charging + kiosk mode so you could take it to the couch would be nice.

  • Has anyone tried using this as second/external monitor?
from the previous post, people said they could not use this as an external monitor. Can anyone please advise?
    TiA

    • +1

It's a Windows PC with a built in screen, not an external monitor.

      • yeah, just hoping in case there's a workaround,..wireless or by adding extra device/software. :(

        • Maybe, have to start googling.

    • +1

i wanted to play NSwitch on this too if possible!
yes by google that is possible but expensive, need capture card or something

      or….
      https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/yc3ema/surface_as_…

      • +1

Cheaper to just buy a portable monitor? They're like $150.

        • but with surface you can do whole lot more, and only $36 extra. bought one anyway,…
will see, still better than Ainol or PiPo back in those days.

          • +1

@babiguling: yeah please share with us (or DM me) if you managed to get it work as monitor, especially if you also have nin.switch to test
            cheerios!

    • Buy a portable monitor powered by USB e.g. Asus ZenScreen

    • Yes I use mine as an external monitor….using it as a wifi display. Works well. Windows for me…..

      • any step by step how to do it? sorry noob here

          • @boxall: wow so technically i can keep my other laptop on upstair, and project to my surface downstair (with mouse and keyboard) and access everything as i am using my laptop?
            kind of virtual machine?

            • @CyberMurning: The screen will display, but no idea what that use case is, unless you just want to show people what you are working on?

              • @boxall: no i want to work on my laptop but from different room/floor, just like i see on the movies people accessing their pc at home from remote places (but i only need within same wifi is fine not remote). i just dont know how to do that

                • @CyberMurning: That's not what wireless displays do. Think of it as a long cable between your PC and the surface and used as another monitor.

You need windows remote desktop….or chrome remote desktop or a variety of other tools.

  • Great timing! My wife needed a new laptop from JB or OW today which would have been atleast 1000 plus so got her this one! Will do the job!

    • +7

well i think your mrs will be sad if you are comparing $1000 new laptop with this gen 7th surface…. just wait a week. you may end up spending $1189 plus angry wife as bonus lol

      • Lol, I hope she does not get angry. She will be mainly using it for basic browsing and web based appllication which means no heavy installations. At max she will only install MS office so should be okay I guess.

        • +3

please do update us after couple weeks.
that is more important than the surface deal itself

          • +2

@CyberMurning: Yea, will update you for sure (If I am still alive).

            • @Yankyviking: Just wondering why you said "new laptop would be $1000 at least" when both J

B and Officeworks have many below that and even some reasonably spec ex display

or clearance models below $800 or less?

              • @ozhunter68: When I said $1000, I did not literally mean exact $1000 but close to that amount which is a lot more than $185.

  • +1

Was happy with my purchase from last year on the same deal - battery life passable, and keyboard was ok condition too

  • -2

Don't trust the seller's promise and go in and gamble
    good luck

  • +19

For anyone using these permanently plugged into AC power, go into UEFI and enable “kiosk mode” under power settings. Babysits the battery between 45-55% charge so it won’t eventually swell and pop the case open lol.

  • +1

Have always wanted a Surface for some light couch web surfing or whatever. This seems like a good opportunity to get one for cheap. Hopefully it's a good one! Thank you.

  • These are great, bought 2 from previous deals (after I dropped the first one and shattered the screen). Need a new type over though.

  • +1

Good deal. But - This processors is a little weak IMHO. The next processor they used after this - i5-8250u is a quad core, and offer a significant performance boost over the 7300u, for not much extra $$. So I'd suggest getting one with that processor, if you want more grunt, especially if they cost only $20-40 more..

    • Keen to see if seller has upgraded models available. I've had a laptop with 7300u, it's garbage

    • +2

8th gen also officially supports Win11.
