[Resolved] Can't Get a Job

I applied for like 30+ jobs. I even applied to KFC. I got an interview and got promptly rejected (lmao). They sent the email less than an hour after the interview. Also got rejected from Coles interview.

I've got nothing to put on my resume. Literally nothing (don't know what an 18 year old would have though). I'm an awful student (65 Atar), so I can't do tutoring. Never had work experience before. I don't have friends or family who can refer me. I'm not athletic at all and have a weak build. My character is pretty bad TBH. My "community" also isn't very helpful, as I went over the the mall and asked them for a job. There is literally nothing going for me.

Some people have told me volunteering. But quite frankly, I don't care about helping people, nor do I feel any satisfaction for it. I just want money.

Part time jobs would rather hire 14 year olds who they can underpay or older people who are more flexible with their times. And the shitty government doesn't give assistance for a job until I'm 21 and on the hook for Centrelink.

I don't understand the song and dance around applying for a minimum wage. YES I'M APPLYING FOR A MINIMUM WAGE, WAGE JOB. NO, I DON'T WANT TO STAY FOREVER. NO, THE JOB DOENS'T GIVE ME PRIDE.

I'm begging you. If you have a job at 7/11 or a some type of cornerstone clerk, please give me advice.

EDIT: I'll be entering uni in 2024. I want a part time job not a career

@kerfuffle: I applied for KFC and got rejected. When did I ever criticize the nature of the job? I simply stated it was unskilled and that anyone can do it, and justified that as my reason for being angry. I truly don't care what the job is(as long as it doesn't involve toilets, or below minimum wage)

            • +19

@Degeneracy: You keep mentioning these jobs you think anyone can do that you weren’t hired for.
The reason you weren’t hired is because the employer judged your attitude would make you poor at the job.
I can’t say it plainer. You can’t do the job you think anyone can do, because you don’t have an employable approach.

Because you have never worked, or even volunteered, and only seen workers from the perspective of the customer spending your parents money, you’ve only seen the bit of the job that involves the customer - not the part about dealing with colleagues, dealing with a boss, doing things out of sight of the customer.
These are usually the harder parts of the job, and you’ll struggle to get employed with an attitude that the job is beneath you and trivial.

    • +1

Really? I guess I could give that a try lol. After first semester I guess I'll give it a try!

      • +2

Yeah just straight up, rcg/rsa is the best decision you can make, and go in person to the pubs/clubs and hand in your CV, and follow up with a phone call. Ask for the manager when you first go in and see how you go. That’s how I got jobs. You can also work out if you really want to work there after talking to them and observing what’s happening around you.

  • +3

Look for "no experience needed" jobs.

  • +13

My kid is younger than you, has finished school and took a gap year. We made him get a job.

    Few things:

1 - adjust the attitude. Sick of the woe is me BS young people have. The world doesn't owe people anything. It is a literal reap what you sow scenario.
30 jobs? So what! Keep going. Speak to employers, ask agencies, find free and subsidised courses and sort your crap out.

2 - at the very least, you can get free or cheap Barista and Food Safety courses, White Card, cybersecurity course, cheap first aid, RSA etc. Go and do something.

3 - school is about to start. While you have missed the school leaver programs for 2024 (although feel free to check state and federal governments to see if still open), you can register to work in schools casually. You will need some qualifications so go check it out.

4 - how do you look? Do you look like your attitude? If so, sort that out too.

5 - you have to tell people what they want to hear. So what if you only want the money. They know that! That's not what they want you to tell them. Do your research on business culture before an interview.

If you've done all that, run your resume through ChatGPT to get some help. But otherwise, hit the streets and try for 100 applications.

      • +10

1 Hahahaha! The government owes us nothing! Omg, what is being taught at some of these schools? We might have a socialist safety net but we're still a capitalist society.

2 congrats. You and everyone else. So what? Youll still be faced with the same dilemma, no, worse, in 4 years due to education inflation if you dont start working now.

4 I refer to your general poise. People can see your attitude. Communication is 99% non verbal.

5 it is an invaluable lesson that we have all had to learn. Better to learn it when young.

I wish you well, but please, get support. University has student employment support - use it.

I applied for 400 jobs before "giving up" and slipping into the mindset of OP. I was feeling pretty down about it, but then changed my attitude and thinking and really put myself out there and got the next one I applied for

  • +20

    Trolling. Nobody is this self-absorbed.

    • -6

I'm not. I just care about myself. I care about money, and little about anything else

      • +6

And this is why you have no job.

          • +13

@Degeneracy: It's not about making people richer. It's about a sense of fulfillment and being proud of of your work. You have no job because you're a whiny little boy who thinks they have life figured out. Get a reality check and an attitude adjustment. At the rate you're going at, you're going to fail your first semester of uni.

            • @kerfuffle: Who is proud of flipping burgers or cleaning shit? They do it because if they don't they die. I want to be the same way. Even if i was proud/fuffiled of my work it wouldn't change the fact that my hard work makes someone else richer

Again got good marks in math. Failed all the other subjects, because they were all a waste of my time/shitty cohort.

              • +3

@Degeneracy: Why do you keep telling us you got good marks in Maths? Clearly it hasn't helped you, has it? Stop blaming others for your predicament, get some perspective and lose the attitude because it's shitty, annoying, and the reason why you can't get some shitty menial job.

@BoltThrower: This is fantastic. Thanks for sharing👌

        • ya wasting ya energy commenting

Totally agree. Account created just for this post.

    • It's Monday, people get bored on Mondays I guess

  • +2

    Probably join bikies.
    We ozb love them

  • Well at least op wants to work.
Now all teenagers are doing content creator work

    • -3

Not true. Most of my classmates had jobs before me. I see them all the time at westfield. It's so awkwared

      • +1

I see them all the time at westfield. It's so awkwared

First of all, learn to speak awkward! and how is it awkward to see your mates at your local Westfield? Like, they are your mates…..

        • +2

Probably feels awkward to be associated with such peasants doing peasant work.

In some years time, after this, it'll be the other way around.

Mates have used maccas experience to land a well payin job, meanwhile, op still wondering why.

        • -1

We are done with HSC English. I spell how I want.

And they are my classmates, not my mates. I don't want to see them in my personal life, nor I theirs

      • Do you feel awkward because your friends see that you don't have a job?

Or, you feel awkward because they do have a job?

Probably only the former one makes sense considering your OP.

        • I feel awkeared because I don't enjoy seeing them outside of school. It's so awkwared when they stare at me with their friends. I don't like being near people in general

    • +1

Well, maybe that's what OP should do. With his attitude, I'm sure he's got the potential to attract viewers.

  • +7

Don't listen to negative comments, the world clearly owes you a living.

  • +5

Join the army or reserves, I think it could do you good and it also allows you to complete study at the same time.
If you can't turn up to a job on time then you won't last long anywhere where you are required to be onsite. And don't use not having a car or licence as an excuse as being an adult also requires you to be able to think about alternate ways of doing things like catching public transport.

If you wanted to do something part time then chat to landscapers and see if they can use a part timer to cart wheelbarrows of dirt around.

      • +15

Just goes to show what a complete twat you are. As a veteran, I don't believe that the military would accept you or your 'everyone owes me a living' bullshit. Maybe you actually take your head out of your arse and learn a bit about what the military really is about.
So you're hoping to complete a Comp Science degree, good for you, though I'm guessing that in 4-yrs time we'll have another post about; I just passed (barely) my Comp Sci degree and nobody will pay me $200K a year with no experience.

        • +4

More like in a 6 months time with a post "i failed my subjects in Comp Sci degree - what can i do now"

          • -1

@lunartemis: WSU fails no one lol

            • @Degeneracy: Wait until you go to uni and fail, especially with the attitude you have.

            • +1

@Degeneracy: But according to you anyone can get a minimum wage job - which is not the case for you lol

        • Nah. I looked at what they do. I don't want to get shipped of to Europe/middle east to make oil tycoons richer.

          • @Degeneracy: It doesn't matter if you can get a degree.

What matters most is if you can get a job with your degree.

            • @wisb0: Least I'm not doing a Bachelor of Liberal Arts lmao

              • @Degeneracy: lol okay. enjoy uni this year.

in 4 years time when u grad, pls tell me if a pass/low credit gpa can land job. i'd be interested, thanks haha

                • +1

@wisb0: Who would be excited for more school lol? After the first week, I'll probs see it for the bullshit it is.

                  • @Degeneracy: Hey at least uni is a lot more flexible than hs

                    • @wisb0: Still gonna be people who make my life hard. Assignments that make me want to kill myself. Teachers who think I'm an arrogant prick.

More of what I hate. How great.

                      • @Degeneracy: No one's making you go to uni.

                      • +2

@Degeneracy: dude, nobody cares at uni.

It's literally going to be mostly international students. They literally have no entry req for internations, as long as they can pay.

                        • @wisb0: I hope. That's what everyone said about high school lol

                          • @Degeneracy: well high school is not very diverse, who cares about assumptions you will see for yourself soon

              • +2

@Degeneracy: Says the person who can’t even get a minimum wage job.

                • +1

                  @kerfuffle: this forum is hilarious,
but i seriously think OP is fr and not a troll cuz there are actually a lot young people like this with this mindset* from my encounters

                  • @wisb0: I reckon OP should use the $600 in his bank account and see a shrink. He certainly has some issues; possibly depression too

                    • @kerfuffle: Most certainly got a shit ton of issues. But wasting my time on that isn't gonna help wtih getting minimum wage.

                      • @Degeneracy: Well not resolving them clearly isn’t helping you, because here you are acting like a job incel

                        • @kerfuffle: Look, today I could either work on myself. Or I could go and play Elden Ring. Guess which one I'll choose.

                          • @Degeneracy: Well Elden Ring isn’t helping you get a job, is it?

                            • @kerfuffle: It's the honest truth though. I would rather do what gives me pleasure in the moment than than what will help me a few years down the line.

                              • +1

@Degeneracy: So how do you expect to get more money for video games if you don't get a job and an attitude adjustment? Aren't there goals you want to achieve in a few years?

                                • @kerfuffle: I can pirate video games. I have plenty anyway.

No. I have no ambitions in life. I hate being productive. I hate any type of work

                                  • @Degeneracy: So how do you expect to buy a console/PC parts to play video games then if you have no money, no ambition and hate work?

                                    • @kerfuffle: I have a 2070 PC. That works for now. I'll worry after I have my degree.

Worst comes to worst, I'll just live in some poor town in the northern territory and live off centrelink.

                      • +1

                        @Degeneracy: maybe it's ur attitude

              • @Degeneracy:

Least I'm not doing a Bachelor of Liberal Arts lmao

Jokes on you then, man. Here's your prospective (lol) future employer's take on what the future of computer science careers looks like now that everything's turning into chatbottery.

                • -2

@whatwasherproblem: By that time, a UBI program will be established, and I can do whatever I want.

                  • +1

@Degeneracy: UBI's not coming this decade, if at all. By 'future of computer science' they mean "in the next few years", which eminently affects you if you're planning to be starting a career in computer/software stuff during that time.

It's actually worth thinking about. To the extent that the 'misanthropic coder with no soft-skills' archetype has ever been a thing (most people would rather work with nice dummies than knowledgeable asshats, even in the tech industry), those days are quickly coming to an end. If your plan for a job after graduating is to be that stereotypical antisocial guy that just codes well but can't get along with clients/coworkers, then you might want to come up with a different plan.

      • +12

I'm certain this is a troll post now.

In the extreme chance you are being genuine I'll offer my observations.
        1) You will never complete your degree, no explanation necessary based on your posts
        2) You've taken on a bunch of uni debt for something you will never complete, congrats
        3) Your flatmates will be your parent/s for the rest of your life
        4) Your friends/family/acquaintances will all move on with their lives and careers while you will still be complaining that nothing is falling in your lap and the world owes you
        5) There is a slight chance you will wake up in 10 years (more likely 20 in this case) and realise how much time you have wasted to have a better life beyond your 40's

I can only assume your parent/s have handed you everything in life or it has been so bad that you can't see anything positive that the thought of actually getting off your @rse to do something is foreign to you.
There is no silver spoon unless you are born into it, life is hard and it takes work to get on top. The world isn't going to do the work for you, think above the line and stop sitting on your hands.

        • yep your spoiled child detector appears to be accurate

  • +2

I'd look at warehouse, meat processing, demolition labourers, picker/packer. Just from this thread alone I wouldn't hire you for a customer facing role, you sound like you have a personality of a wet sock, so focus on something non-customer facing.

Also I'd give up lying so heavily in interviews because I imagine it shows.

    • -3

I tried picker/packer and warehouse. They won't hire me. :( they woudl rather hire full time or older people with a licence and car. Meat processing is going to go the same way. I'm so (profanity). Honestly I wish i was a weed dealer. Lots of money. I can tell my customers to (profanity) off, and that they are nothing more than a dollar sign to me

Also I have to lie. What do I say? "I don't actually have any experience with compromising. I just tell my friends/team teammates "my way or the high way""

      • +6

Also I have to lie. What do I say? "I don't actually have any experience with compromising

If you did volunteering, then you wouldn't have to lie 🤯

      • +4

I hope most of your friends opt for the highway option as you're clearly going nowhere fast…

      • +2

Did you apply at warehouses saying they are taking casual/part time staff? You can select that as a search criteria on Seek.

You've never had to compromise in your whole life? Yeesh. But seriously, the fact you get booted out directly after interviews makes it clear that you're a really crap liar so you need to try something different. You should also try at multiple KFCs, they tend to do their own hiring individually as they're franchised.

Mostly though, a good lesson in compromising might be taking some of the advice in order to land a job. Like taking a volunteer job. You don't want to do it but it will get you where you want to be, that's compromise. You recognise you're bad at it, there's an easy starting point on getting better at it.

      • +3

Honestly I wish i was a weed dealer. Lots of money. I can tell my customers to (profanity) off, and that they are nothing more than a dollar sign to me

If you think this is the way, I think this is one of the main issues…. Whatever your business is, a good relationship with customers is essential to keep them continuing to be a returning customer. Doesn't matter if you're just in for work and just for a money having good communication skills is the key (even if you know your real personality isn't like this).

      • +2

You're correct, a licence/car makes it much easier to get a job (and friends/relationships)

If you were a weed dealer you'd get rolled, probably beat up and possibly murdered (especially if you didn't build rapport with them). Or you'd get put in a situation where you have to defend yourself, hurt/kill someone as a result and go to jail for dealing and murder/manslaughter. The money isn't good unless you're getting involved with bikies, in which case you will be killed

You don't have to lie, you can just try and compromise once and hold on to that experience, forever repeating it during interviews. As has been echoed many times in this thread, THE EASIEST WAY FOR YOU TO GET A JOB IS TO CHANGE SOME ASPECTS OF YOUR PERSONALITY. That doesn't mean you have to change every aspect about yourself, you can still speak up and speak your mind honestly

I don't understand your aversion to change? Do you want to have made no progress on yourself since turning 18? Is this really as good as you ever want to be? I understand you're going to uni but a degree isn't magically going to make these problems go away. With nothing on your resume but a degree, employers will notice something's up

  • "I don't care about helping people, nor do I feel any satisfaction for it. I just want money" - perfect for selling drugs….you mind working at Cabramatta or Warwick Farm?

    • They've thought about it; they just don't have the guts to follow through because they're a little whiny boy

    • +7

Selling drugs isn’t that easy. Treat your customers like garbage and the cops will be there soon. Treat your suppliers like garbage and the bikes will be there sooner.
There isn’t a job for OP with their current attitude.

      • -1

Actually, there is always something for anyone in this world, you just don't know about it (yet).

        • Please enlighten us, what is that something that is always there we don't know about but you are privy to?

  • +1

I'm an awful student (65 Atar)

That isn't awful. I got worse and I know people who have gotten worse. I got under 55. A 65 still isn't bad and can get you places along with courses. Plus, you don't need an ATAR to do a tafe course.

There must be a reason why you are getting rejected from roles. What state are you in?
