Totally LOFI Japanese Cooking like they did hundreds of years ago since the Edo period.

After I bought the Niigata Prefecture White Rice from the recent ozbargain deal here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/824875 I researched how to authentically cook this rice like they do in japan. I have the Tiger and Cuckoo rice cookers also from previous ozbargain deals but I totally wanted to go the other way and go completely lofi…

So I bought a couple of Earthenware Donabe Clay Pots from the Ginpo Pottery. Can't wait to give this a go and try out rice, spare ribs, stews, pork belly, salmon, sweet chicken, hotpot style and lots of other stuff. These Japanese donabe pots seem to be really versatile! They can also go from the stove into the oven.

They come in different size options and designs so I bought a couple of versions as I ended up like this guy. Also a good intro video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXV-1M1NewI

Here is what I bought:

Large (No.9, 3.2L) $46 for 4-5 People Beautiful design
https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B004VKTQMI?m=A2K69GP4EI…
(If you land on $85 then go to OTHER SELLERS, pick the $46 option from Japan , half price… deal won't last.

Small (No.6, 0.85L) $32 for One Person
https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B009VUZCW6?m=A2K69GP4EI…

Medium (No.8, 1.9L) $52 Next Gen version
https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B009VUZHQW?m=A2K69GP4EI…

I also want compare the taste when using the Donabe vs a Tiger rice cooker…i'm curious about the results but looks like these vessels can do soooo much more than rice !

My gp said don't eat too much white rice.

keep it in the fridge overnight and starch content will drop signficanlty so blood sugar will not spike (as much)

  • How do you cook with these things? I like how they look and feel.

    • +1

Carefully is usually the rule. You put stuff in first then bring it slowly up to temperature if cooking on a stove (or put everything in and put in the oven), if you're doing something like frying off onion for the meal you don't whack the heat up with a bit of oil because the thing just keeps absorbing heat and is liable to crack. Also needs to be properly dried first, you don't want little bits of water in the clay boiling.

I had one (that I broke, learned the above the hard way), you just put in stock, slowly heat it to the boil, turn it down a bit and keep throwing stuff in to make your udon/ramen/whatever. Kinda like a hot pot, I guess?

  • ah gotcha thanks. Too much effort for me but i respect it.

I'll respect my Gin-ho I got from the last deal now :3

19th October I managed to get the 4 - 5 person one for $42.62. Haven't opened it yet. Wonder if I should get a smaller one.

    • +1

Did you check if it was still in one piece? I know 5+ people including myself had them arrive broken last time.

    • Should be
Wonder if I should open it now

The quality is very bad, broken apart after one year.

    • +5

it's pottery and needs to be looked after, it's not the quality, it's a delicate cooking vesel and not a steel pot. Needs seasoning and proper care and can last a lifetime ps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmH_GVz164k

it's not fast food, it's lofi slow food, exactly what I wanted and total opposite spectrum of instant pot…

      • it's lofi slow food

Lofi as in low fidelity? You used it in the deal description too.

        • yes, no tech, imperfections, by hand vs the tiger rice cooking computer machine

Looking at your old comments…Why do you hate Japan and west countries soo much but promote China?

      • +3

@Yosan maybe cooldog is paid by the 50 cent army?

        • Seven Nation Army needs to go hard on his nether regions then

  • Ordered twice and arrived broken twice (Amazon customer service was excellent and quick to offer a refund both times).

Wouldn't hurt to message the seller to package it woth more buffer material inside the original box.

For those contemplating, seasoning and care instructions -

I use a double-lid donabe, which are great especially, for rice.

  • Not a criticism of the post/OP but are they very different/superior to the ones sold at Asian shops?
I got one for ~$15 few yrs back (probably now they are a little bit more expensive than that) and found to be really good.

    • +2

some of the reasons why I chose them and probably a few factors to consider

      • made in japan (Ginpo Pottery is a long-established earthenware manufacturer in Mie Prefecture, which has been around 90 years from 1932.)
      • glazed vs non glazed
      • size
      • some of the have beatiful intricate (traditional) design
      • durabilty (and material thickness)
      • heat retenyion and radiation
      • free shipping
      • microwave safe
      • dishwasher safe
        probably some other points

some on Amazon Japan seem less than half price of what you pay here incl. shipping so I gave it a go. it is my first donabe

    • more than $100 at costco… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/619397

  • I have ordered 3 of these. Two arrived cracked. The first they refunded no question. The second, several weeks later, they wanted returned. The second did not have any better packaging. So many reported cracked, such a waste. Beautiful item much more expensive elsewhere but be prepared.

  • Just a heads up these are Chinese copies of the original GinPO which are made in Japan.

The GinPO ones I got from Amazon Japan are well packaged and yet to get one that is damaged. I've purchase three in seperate orders.

These Chinese made knockoffs are quite common in Japan as they are about half the price of the Japan made GinPO.

The GinHO name can be easily mis read as GinPO

    • Thanks. Says made in japan in the listings. Will see what comes in the mail and if it says made in China I will return it.

    • I reckon ginHo is typo and doesn't exist. It is meant to say ginpo. Just a typo.

Details in the listing says Made in Japan.

    Arrived
    It's ginpo
    all in one piece
and it's amazing for $46 bucks!

    • yeah mine too, all in one piece.

It's packaged in its retail box and then simple packing paper around it inside an amazon box, so definitely can see these breaking in transit.

Ginpo foil sticker with Made in Japan written on it

      • yes, good price as locally here they are over $100

Re breakage will all depend on how the carrier treats it , you can package it all you want but if you get one of those then you have no chance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7p497WsUEqA

  • Just received mine with a broken lid. Amazon gave me a refund without asking me to send it back. Gonna order another one as it is still the same price.
