Sorry, but I don't understand the description.
Good price for japanese rice, although I buy Hinata when it's 1/2 price, you get 90% the way there.

    • +9

Product of Vietnam though. It's about 50% as good as Niigata Koshihikari in my opinion.

      • From vietnam, but taste and texture wise, it's close for me. Probably has to do with a $500 cuckoo

        • +11

I'm using a $500 tiger. taste and texture feel very different. I wish Hinata was close. My Costco doesn't sell Niigata Koshihikari anymore.

          • +1

@Harrison: I've always found that Hinata pretty awful ( I haven't tried the one from this deal though)

            • +1

@kulprit: Hinata used to be $10 when on sale
50% inflation in a couple of years, sad

        • +3

I have both a $500 Cuckoo and a $700 Zojirushi rice cooker. And the Cuckoo butchers the rice. I guess that is why it is cheaper. The Zojirushi really lets me bring out the different taste and textures when cooking a variety of rice from different origins.

For more cost effective rice, look at Sunrice Koshihikari (the grown in Australia one) rice as an option. It's not as good as a true Niigata prefecture rice as it matches the texture but not the sweetness. But at 1/2 the price of the real deal, it is worth trying if all you had previously was long grain, medium grain or jasmine rice. Watch out for the grown in Uruguay version, it is not as good and has a different odour to it. The Uruguay version came about when there was a rice shortage here in Australia. The country of origin is labelled on the bag.

          • +2

@Sleepycat3: Sorry but if you are getting “butchered” rice in a $500 Cuckoo, the issue isn’t the cooker it’s the user.

            • @boredofficeworker: Sure, believe what you want. it is likely that I have more experience cooking rice than you do (call me an asian boomer).

Previously, I was getting good results with a $120 Tiger basic rice cooker as well (retired it as the base of the aluminium bowl started pitting). When I had my Zojirushi rice cooker which I purchased from Japan for $700, I could get maybe 70% close to it using Sunrice Koshihikari rice (planted in Australia). Too bad my Zojirushi seal and bowl had worn out after 12 years, so I bought the Cuckoo because it was available here and cheaper. Same rice, same method and unfortunately, the line between too dry and too wet is very narrow with the Cuckoo, unlike with the Zojirushi. What I can say is that the Cuckoo rice cooker gives me rice similar to what I get at a Korean restaurant. But it is still nowhere near what I get at a ryokan in Japan (Hokkaido, Osaka and My Fuji Kawaguchiko areas), which the Zojirushi was able to get me close to. Keep in mind, this is the same rice all this while.

              • @Sleepycat3: It’s not so much belief as personal experience.

We eat a LOT of rice, both out and while at home and I have heaps of experience cooking a very wide selection of grains from different brands and at different price points.

We currently own a high end Cuckoo and it produces some of the best rice I’ve personally eaten and I say that having just gotten back from a trip to Taiwan/Osaka/Kyoto. I can say the rice cooked at home in our Cuckoo rivals the best we had overseas, where presumably they had the home ground advantage in terms of rice quality.

Claiming Cuckoo is somehow inferior to Zojirushi seems more like misplaced brand loyalty to me and while you are free to your own opinion, I still maintain that if you can’t produce equivalent results using a $500 Cuckoo, the issue isn’t the brand.

I have to presume at the price you paid, your Cuckoo has both IH and pressure.

          • @Sleepycat3: Good comments at least with people having experience in different types of rice and cookers.

I bought rice in Taiwan and Okinawa as souvenirs before. The best rice I had so far is Taiwan Chihshang rice "Tribute Rice" export version. The Hokkaido rice I bought in Okinawa was Ok but not "wow". My friend swears that only those MIJ > $1500 rice cookers can really bring out the best of true Japanese rice. Meanwhile, I am content with Cuckoo and Sunrice Koshihikari ( Uruguay). Will open a bag of Sunrice Koshihikari ( Australia) soon.

        • +1

I use my aldi rice cooker and I thought it was really good until reading these comments. I think when it's time to get a new rice cooker I'll spend a decent amount.

          • @mckayver: But even spending $500 on Cuckoo may not get you there 😞

            • +1

@Cupa Bundy Drinker: A S/S pot with lid does for nearly all Asian people I have met and dined with over 50years. The lid is used to adjust the steam with the water/rice ratio of 1 rice :1.2 water short grain up to 1:1.5 water for long grain rice (rinsed three times + salted to taste). Japanese rice cookers are great but I never use mine anymore. Rice is Life and a Japanese Donabe with steam hole will laugh at your expense as a one pot amazement of cooktop to table (and for more foods than just rice.)

      • +1

Wow the description on that does it's best to imply its Japanese without actually saying it's Japanese.

Hinata', refers to 'place in the sun' in Japanese. The sun is an essential ingredient in our Hinata short grain rice, bringing essential life and warmth to the fields from which we carefully select delicious, sun ripened rice

hitana is vietnam rice and not koshihikari and quality not the same. hitana contains many un well processed ones.

5kg? I think I’m going to hell if I order this and get my Amazon driver to lug this to my front door. 😬

    • +3

      20kg or nothing babyyyyyyy!

    • -5

Bro if I can do 30kg overhead press then I'm sure anyone can deliver my order of 4 bags to my door 💪😎👌

Try getting delivered 24 bottles of water when you live in an apartment on the second floor with no lift.

It’s great Amazon lets you out in delivery information in the order (gate code / level 2). 🙏

      • +2

        You give the gate code?!

    • You didn't order the dumbbells then…..

    • +1

20kg is the minimum size I would buy for rice. But it would be a good workout compared to the 5x CR2023 lithium button batteries that I purchased recently.

  • Thanks bought one

        If only Chinese people were allowed to learn about China;
        https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/aug/25/fukushim…

          • +31

@xws: The interesting fact that is on the social media, some Chinese bought a simple radiation detector, checked the radiation levels in Fukushima and some Chinese cities and found out the radiation levels are higher in China.

          • +1

@xws: This has nothing to do with racism. Take your race card elsewhere.

If you actually read the article from theguardian above, it points out that both China and South Korea criticised Japan over Fukushima water discharge. But also noted that China and South Korea also released nuclear wasted water into its respective region

            • -5

@Scythic: Nuclear contaminated water is different with nuclear wasted water. Stop saying Chinese government "claimed the word". Japanese also use the same word "nuclear contaminated water".
              https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00223131.2014.9…

Any proof of Chinese being forbidened to learned about China? @Turd just stated a fact that happened in China. How did it make you think Chinese not allowed to learn about China?

              • -1

@xws: Everyone knows Chinese people in China aren't allowed to know the true details about China, except for those who've already been brainwashed.

                • +1

@buckster: You are right. Everyone disagrees with you is brainwashed.

              • +3

@xws: Ok my bad. You're right. There's no censorship in China and the Chinese government is 100% transparent to its citizens

                • -3

@Scythic: Good strategy when you have no evidence.

                  • +2

@xws: You should think twice before using the race card next time. Good luck with that attitude, mate

                    • -1

@Scythic: You may put your ego aside before typing. You just put your discrimination on table but can’t stand others criticize it.

You don’t have to embarrass yourself like that if you cannot answer these questions.

                      • +2

                        @xws: Stop. You're embarrassing yourself.

      • +1

It's strange though because they are still eating the same fish.

China banned the imports from Japan, they have not banned the catchment and sale of fish from Japanese waters.

That means the Chinese ships can still fish in the 'contaminated water', bring it to China and sell it.

Chinese boats are catching fish in what Beijing calls “Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water” for distribution in China, while the same marine products caught in the same area by Japanese vessels remain banned in that country.

It’s Australia, why would you post about this. Anti-China news takes front page here so no one cares.

If there is any issues, people here will learn a lesson after a couple of decades, like how silicosis was found out. If you believe the 3 eyed fish in the Simpsons, stick to your beliefs in private.

I ran my geiger over some snacks

Of all the things that didn't happen, this happened the didn't'st

      • As a former FML website user, this 100.00% didn’t happen.

    • Post a youtube video?

    • Even a geiger counter would return a lower result with fish fished from around the Fukushima area than normal food items that fished out of the waters in China.

  • I will buy it if it is project of Japan! no doubt

  • Isn't this the region that was just hit by an earthquake?

    • +7

They packed this rice before the earthquake.

    • +2

It's only slightly hit by the 1/Jan earthquake as Niigata is around 270km north from the epicenter Wajima

  • +2

Fyi Costco (at least my local one) sells 5kg of niigita koshihikari for ~$35 regularly and ~$27 on sale, which is probably higher quality than this

    • +6

niigita koshihikari is better quality than Niigata Koshihikari?

  • +3

I'm no rice connoisseur, is it that much better than sunrice?

    • Microwave pouch sunrice is the best.

    • +3

Is it that much better? Yes. Will YOU be able to tell the difference? Probably not.
It's like….giving an American promite or vegemite, one is much nicer than the other but they don't consume it enough to tell.

      • lol, they don't consume any at all, and throw up on both. they like to spread it thick like peanut butter, and that first bite scares them for life.

        • bro at least they spread, i've seen muricans just straight up put a full table spoon in their mouths like tf… it's almost like they're doing it for clout

          • @dukeGR4: lol, they don't know what moderation is, have you seen there portion sizes, lol

    • Yes, much better than even the Sunrice Koshihikari in the black and gold packaging, grown in Australia and costing $50-60 per 20kg.

  • Bougth. That will last us 6 years
    I hope it is good

  • +2

This 5 star Japanese rice master says wash no more than two minutes and soak prior to cooking for 30min to 1hr. Will try that out with this one.

    https://youtu.be/xr42ae2K8wQ

    • +1

      that makes no sense, lol.

only wash 2 minutes but you can leave it soaking for 60 minutes? roflmao

i feel this would make mushy rice soaking for an hour. i never tried it but feel it would make porridge at that point.

      • +1

it really depends on the kind of rice you are cooking with, and what kind of dish you're trying to cook.

You wouldn't say cook any and all pasta for 8 minutes.

        • not the same thing, but i get what you are saying. you definitely wouldn't soak your pasta for an hour, ever. al dente was over a long time ago, lol

      • how doesn't it make sense? In terms of instructions or why they're soaking?

        • So that you cook the rice from both the inside and outside after soaking, instead of just cooking from the outside if it was without soaking. It's the absorbed water that boils, not the rice itself.

Why would anyone want to buy Rice grown in Japan? especially Niigata is right next to Fukushima

I stopped anyway. that is why they are on sale….used to be 40+ AUD

    • That now really concerns me…
Maybe add some iodine to it?

About 70% of the water held in the tanks still contains cesium, strontium, carbon-14 and other radionuclides exceeding government-set levels. It will be re-treated until the concentrations meet those limits, then diluted by more than 100 times its volume of seawater before it is released

    • -2

This. How it affects whole food supply chain is largely unknown especially for longer consumption.

So made in Vietnam sounds better actually.

  • japanese sushi ramen teppanyaki outlets also run by asians. don't be surprised it is made in veitnam and what's with the comments about chinese in this post. lol

  • Anything from Japan will need a geiger counter check, or just avoid it fully.

This is not politics but you and your family's health. Personally a good rule of thumb is avoid Japan imported food if I have plan to have more kids, otherwise it's fine.

    • Why only Japan?
