  • How many dollars are 2000 points worth?

    • $10

      • +1

hahaha - so you need to do 40!!!! transactions to get $10. Good god, that would take the full ozbargain spirit. I find it really misleading tbh how these companies make 2000 points seem like such a large amount. Why not just do 1 point = $1 or 1c or something easy!!

        • +4

But at the end of the day, you need to shop, don't go out of your way to get stuff you don't need for this, but do your shopping, get milk, that sort of stuff. You may not get 2000 points, but if your a flybuys user anyway, the points add up, and eventually you get a $10-$20 voucher, easy enough.

        • +1

Agreed! I always use my card when I shop (Coles, Target, bottle shop etc…) and I make it to 2,000 points pretty easily. I don't check it fanatically, but whenever my statement arrives I'm surprised at how quickly the points have accumulated from ordinary shopping.

Way better than the Woolworths program which has a $30 minimum shop. I tend to do a lot of small shops ($25 and under) so Fly Buys is the only one that works for me, since I'm not about to change my shopping habits just to get an extra point or two.

  • +10

what is the cheapest item on coles?

    • +16

      $0.54 Chupa Chups Lollipops… Maybeeeee

or 1 grape per transaction XDDD

      • +15

Cheapest item without looking like an idiot is a clove of garlic or a small red chilli. Both are 5c.

        Btw i work at coles.

        • +6

the chilli cost me 12 cents! dont forget the coles reuseable bags for 10c. Lol just did 3 transactions at the self serve and the girl kept asking me if i was OK.

        • +6

tell her your high on OzB spirit! he he

        • Would i get thrown out of the store if i did this (40 times)?

        • Depends what your are wearing, or not!
Really who would notice. You're spending money in Coles - that's the object of this promotion. If you use a self-serve checkout, you may be asked if you need assistance. But there are so many checkouts.

        • yeah i get the same when i do my fortnightly shop - costs about $100 or more which i split into three transactions at the self serve to get three 8c vouchers for fuel. Gets weird looks.

    • +10

such a true ozbargainer's question to ask

    • +7

Or a 15c biodegradable bag. You know, since they charge us for bags in SA and all.

    • the question should be what's the minimum cashout :)

      • +3

You can always put the cash back in the bank

      • +1

Minimum cashout is $1, not sure what the min. for the deal is though.

        • -1

Most Coles in Melbourne has a $20 minimum for cash out :/

        • +5

The self checkouts yes have pre determined amounts starting from $20. From an operated register (a cashier) the minimum is $1. Like i said i work for coles.

        • -1

no they don't.. i've got HEAPS of amounts out from 50c up

          (replying to monicaar)

  • +3

I don't understand, why are they promoting cash out? do they get a percentage. That's $20 x 40 transactions, You'll have $800 before leaving there lol

    • LOL you're correct, so we need to go to bank and re-deposit the money :)

    • +2

No, but EFT costs them less than a credit card transaction

    • +5

they dont get charged any fee if there is cash-out involved.

    • You don't need $800 if you're depositing your money back to the bank straight after you withdraw.
Just find a shopping center that has both coles and your bank :)

  • I thought I read on the sign u get the bonus points for paying by cheque or savings account also

  • +23

too much effort for $10 i reckon :(

    Coles should be more generous

  • they use to have 2500 points for a $25 gift card, is that not around anymore?

    • They changed the points. Now you need more points, but get 1 point per $ so you get more as well. It's a slightly better reward rate in the end (though still not as good as the program before the previous revamp).

  • +7

50 FlyBuys point is equivalent to about 25c.
IMHO Its good for Coles as there is less money in the tills, meaning less cash collection, less money lost on interest for money in the till, people not using the credit option means they dont need to pay Visa/Mastercard/Amex/Diners anything and of course its advertising.

    • +3

It's ALL about the credit card fees. I love Paypass and Paywave and use them all the time - but from a retailers point of view more people using credit cards is not a good thing - they pay more fees, without necessarily an increase in sales.

    • Don't forget the time/money spent in counting the cash and the cost of an armoured vehicle to transport the day's takings back to the bank.

    • IMHO Its good for Coles as there is less money in the tills, meaning less cash collection, less money lost on interest for money in the till

In an ideal world that would be the case. They are still charged by the bank for the transaction however, and generally it can take a couple of days or so for the money to hit a merchant's account - another example of bank rip offs.

  • +2

Nowhere in the ad does it say that you need to make a purchase to get this??

I say we just go scan our flybuys, get 5 bucks cash out and have sweet dreams of the millionaires we're gonna become coz of this. </sarcasm>

    For quick reference: http://i.imgur.com/rfBJl.jpg

now is this bending the rules or breaking them?

  • +3

Doesn't seem worth it at all! 40 transactions for $10? bah humbug.

    Ozbargainers could make this true!

I wonder is 1 grape even heavy enough to make the scales register?

    • +5

Should be. I regularly buy one baby red chili for 1c

  • +1

Nice addition if you have an ING DIrect Orange Everyday account and withdraw $200 cashout for an extra 50cent rebate.

    • 40 x ($1 purchases + $200 cash out) for $20 cash from ING & $10 FlyBuys points. Getting better.
Now just need $8040 in my Everyday account, or $240 & keep redepositing $200 at the Post Office (free) in between! Sounds exhausting!

      • Is it instantly deposited in your account if you go to aus post?

        • +2

          I think it is.
I have been depositing cash at the post office, then walking directly to coles and using that money via ING paywave for the 5% discount.

        • How can you get cashout if you use paywave (which is a credit function)?

        • +1

You can't. It says chq or savings only.

    • +1

50 cents from ING is worth double the 50 flybuy points. But $200 minimum cash out is required.

  • I love the OzBargainer in the poster. 40 transactions for a $10 gift card :-)

  • +5

I did 3 small Credit Card purchases in Woolies within 15 minutes - which was enough for the Commonwealth Bank to flag my account as suspicious activity & call me. Now 40…

  • Has anyone checked if this works if you pay using gift cards?

    • +3

How would you get cash out with a gift card???

    • Haha in your dreams mate. If you could then the original poster and myself will pop down to Coles after spending all out money on giftcards and withdraw cash for a quick $25 profit per transaction.

We'd be millionaires in a fortnight.

  • Warning for those pulling cash out from a credit card… the interest you're likely to incur is going to be MUCH more than the $10 benefit.

    • +1

It all depends… I used to deposit cash into my 28Degrees CC for free ATM withdrawals while overseas (no Cash Advance Fee). (Now travel with Citibank Debit card for free ATM withdrawals OS.) But if its the bank's money - you'll pay interest and possibly a cash advance fee.

Commonwealth Bank: "If your account is in credit after the cash advance transaction has been processed, you will not be charged interest however a cash advance fee of $2.50 will still apply"

      • Aren't you losing out on the unfavourable FX rate that the bank applies, when you withdraw overseas? Surely they will incorporate the ATM withdrawal fee into the FX spread. No?

        • +2

You'd think so, but when you go back and do the calculations after the fact, it usually works out to be the closest to the market rate of any retail FX provider (at least with 28 Degrees anyway. I can't speak for the others).

        • No - read the forums for info. 28Degrees is popular on OB to make online purchases in merchant's currency, avoiding PayPals exchange rate & fee.

28Degrees exchange is at Mastercard's rates with no Forex or ATM fees. Its very hard to better on small purchases. Have changed to Citibank Debit (similar advantages) set up with automatic deposits from UBank etc while I travel & leave 28Degrees as a Forex free CCard.

        • Have you found the Citibank Visa Debit card rates similar to the 28Degrees card when withdrawing cash overseas?

    • You can't "cash out" from credit. Yes I know you can do a cash advance from an ATM.

  • +2

    True ozbargainer will do:

    1. Buy item
    2. $1.00 cash out
    3. deposit money back to the bank
    4. refund item
    5. repeat step 1 (x 39)
    6. profit :)
    • +2

This deal is not exploitable because it's so lame. It would take you probably 3 mins to do the steps 1 - 6 assuming no queues. (and I'm being VERY generous) Then you would look like an idiot going back to the same check out person 40 times in a row. And what do you get for your 2 hours of hard work? $10 :)
Yeah i know you're joking with the scenario above but it proves how pointless it is.

      • +2

        You're not really an OzBargainer

    • +1

Do the $1 cash out… but rather than going back to the bank 40 times, why not just do the cash out 40x and deposit the $40 in $1 coins all at one go? Otherwise, save the 40 $1 coins for parking and not make a special trip to the bank at all!

      • that's how i just told the wife i'm going to do it before i read this

    • I thought minimum cashout was $10

  • -1

I wonder if the self serve weight scales measure sligtly under or over at coles.
Because I was thinking of getting 40 almond nuts, from the bulk nut bin ($14.95 per kg)
Then paying for each nut seperately at the self serve, for the $10 of flybuys.
If the scale measurered slightly under, that would be nice, since the error would accumulate ?
Maybe 1 nut is too light and would give an error.

    Yeah, too much work.

  • Instead of buying 40 grapes/chupa chups/almonds why don't you just do your standard shop and pay at self service buying an item at a time.

You don't need to do this all in one day you've got a few weeks.

Don't know how many people would benefit from the mix clothing 2000 points for $20 - I know a dollar per transaction is a lot better for me than 50cents.

  • +2

LOL some of these comments are reminding me of that old Amex points promo… the one that got seriously out of hand…

  • +1

Why are people excited over $10 for so much effort?

    • It's not about the $10.
For me it's about adding bonus points just by do a cash out at the register.
If you're shopping at coles regularly and collect flybuys point, it's a good deal.
Rather than paying by cash/eftpos, you can collect more points by doing this.

  • You can now also get a 10c fuel discount for 1000points on top of the 8c discount this month or on weekend they had 14c and i got a 24c fuel discount. once you get the 10c discount at fly buys site it will come up on your next reciept on your next purchase. Then spend more than $2 at shell and get extra 2c on top. Make more like this if you fill up your tank in middle of the week (i did anyway)

  • There's the trick which u only need to purchase ad refund, refund it 40times ad u are done.

  • .

  • just do the cash out with a ing card and get 50cent.

    • You need to cash out at least $200 to get the 50 cent.

  • Does anyone know if this works at Coles Central?

  • anyone knows if the point credited immediately or there is a processing time? used it 2x but my points only show original purchase point (no additional 50 point)

    • it can take til early the next month, or early the month after for bonus points to be credited. None of mine have shown up but one other bonus deal did.
