I'm not sure what's happening at Chatswood, but at Burwood, David Jones is reducing their store footprint from 3 levels to 2 with the top floor being done away with. Rumour has it that a JB-Hifi will be taking up part of the space that DJ's currently has on the 3rd floor.

    • +16

The BS rent in this country is so bad, even major anchor tenants are struggling.

      • +7

Absolutely, and add to that retail shopping struggles etc.

      • +14

Is David Jones even major anchor tenant in 2024? To me they seem fairly irrelevant. With that said, their Sydney CBD store is much nicer than Myer's.

        • +4

You tell me if they are major anchor. Its not like Australia even have that many big store choices for us to dismiss a couple. If you can only afford to buy the cheapest and don't care about Kmart quality, then yeah irrelevant. If you subscribe to you get what you pay for, then Myer and David Jones are absolutely the main choices.

          • +9

            @Fuzor:

If you subscribe to you get what you pay for, then Myer and David Jones are absolutely the main choices.

When it comes to electronics, appliances, homewares, etc. then Myer and David Jones offer basically the same as stores that specialise in those products, so I'll focus on fashion since that is their main point of difference

The reason I think they're irrelevant is for two main reasons:

            1. their websites are terrible. In this regard I feel like online stores like The Iconic are miles ahead - and I don't even particularly like The Iconic
            2. their buyers are too undiscriminating, so the range is expansive but confusing, especially when you take my first point into account. I'm looking at the DJs site now and you see Puma outlet junk alongside luxury designer stuff. For the designer stuff, stores like Incu and Harrolds are much better curated (even in-store I find David Jones a much less pleasant place to be)
            • +1

@beltdrive: I'm sure many ozbargainers have purchased appliances and lego (not necessarily designer brand clothing and bags) etc stacked with discounts and cashback which has worked out cheaper than the other stores.

I doubt Harrolds will last in Chadstone. Prices are way more than online stores, staff were not friendly at all, seemed more interested in their street image and the sale items were impossible to find during the stocktake sales.

We need the large stores to provide competition still

      • +5

If the rumour is true then I see JB as a major tenant. Premium retailers with large store footprints have been trending down in relevance for the last 10 years. DJ's business model is just changing rather than demand for retail space decreasing.

      • +5

Rent is not the problem for these stores…

      • Yes… The rental cost was causing real grief to DJs… Not

        • +3

Ah yes you must be one of Howard's "battlers" baby boomer who had it hard when they took over everything in sight

      • It’s just the rent that’s driving up the cost of everything. No wonder why so many small business owners shut down their business.

    • Southland is also going from 3 levels to 2 later this year, they are losing the top floor too.

      • +2

Southland already have half it's floor space blocked off since COVID. It's a dead store walking.

        https://www.afr.com/street-talk/scentre-gets-serious-issues-…

Both Burwood and Southland are Westfield's.

        • Yeah it's been part blocked off for ages but the renovation is finally coming soon. I'm hoping something like Uniqlo or H&M takes over the top floor.

      • Half of the DJs seem to only open the top floor for Christmas stuff every year, otherwise it is blocked off. They don't really sell much in the way of toys and other products that used to be up there anymore.

    • +3

omg big if true, would love JB @ Burwood

    • +1

Hope it's true… About bloody time there was an electronics retailer inside Burwood Westfield

    • Rumour has it that a JB-Hifi will be taking up part of the space

They should rename themselves as well. There hasn't been anything "hifi" about them for years, they're basically just a HN alternative now.

      • +1

Exactly, and their employees wouldn't have a clue what HIFI is. Some still have diapers on and if wasn't for the tats I would have thought they were babies :)

        • Diapers? You must be talking about Best Buy

          • +1

@BargainMe: Ok nappies. No best buy in Sth Sydney so wouldn't have a clue. But JB it's like walking into a goth club at the local kindergarten.

      • I saw JB is selling the Britney Spears book. The staff at counter said they sold one this year :)

    • Chatswood Chase is undergoing major renovations.

  • does anyone have a list of exclusions?

    • The email states that basically anything with a markdown sticker that is in one of the categories listed is included.

      No sticker = not discounted.

  • +4

Chatswood Chase is going through a redevelopment impacting most shops there. Started from ground floor, shops are closed, relocated and re-opened, other levels likely follow suit.

  • +1

    First Dick and now David.

    • +1

      double D's

  • So is this starting today and Eastland DJs is closing on Sunday or is this starting Sunday for Eastland?

    • +3

Eastland is closing this Sunday. Everything marked down in the categories listed is half price.

      • +1

Thanks Bargain Ben. I might head over later today :)

        • +4

Went just now, Eastland VIC. Not much left, mostly perfumes, clothes, shoes and kitchen stuff (plates and mugs etc). Not many kitchen appliances and no home electrical at all (no speakers, TVs etc), that section has been blocked off. A few home care appliances like electric toothbrushes. Not even sure if all of them are 50% off. Overall a waste of time.

          • @dreamykitten: Are the perfumes 50% off, or just full price? I highly doubt they would discount them when they can just ship em over to the next store.

            • @dealoverlord: I saw the perfume has no markdown sticker as of 4pm today. Can only see a few staff behind the till so cbb bother to ask

          • @dreamykitten: Thanks! saves me the drive

  • +5

    selected

when you see this word you just know it's gonna be the stuff nobody wants

  • anyone found anything good? do they have frank green cups?

    • +1

They did when I was there last week, alas not discounted and doubt it will be part of 50% as well

    • No, frank green is not part of the 50% sales

  • Is this just another one of those BS "UP TO" 50% or inflated rrp sales?

    • +1

It says it is an extra 50% off clearance items. So, if something is already on sale, there is another 50% off as they don't want to move stock they are already trying to clear to another store that is also trying to clear it.

  • +2

I'll wander down into Eastland but doubt there are any true bargains. Will be super curious to see what takes up their space - they have already reduced from 2 levels to 1

    • +3

Do you mind updating after visiting? Might pop in after work but if no good bargains then won't bother…

      • +2

Went just now, Eastland VIC. Not much left, mostly perfumes, clothes, shoes and kitchen stuff (plates and mugs etc). Not many kitchen appliances and no home electrical at all (no speakers, TVs etc), that section has been blocked off. A few home care appliances like electric toothbrushes. Not even sure if all of them are 50% off. Overall a waste of time.

        • Agree I just went at 4pm. Rubbish. They have a section at the front for their actual 'bargain' mainly clothes, $10 Calvin Klein shirt, bras, etc. most were already gone by 4pm

Other items like plates coffee plunger etc were like 40% discount for full priced items

  • +6

Nothing good is discounted. All luxury brands look like they’re gonna be transferred to another store or back to the supplier

  • +4

I went to Eastland the other week hoping this would be the case then. Unfortunately store was mostly cleared out and nothing really marked down bar Stocktake Sale specials that are at all stores currently anyway . Still had Country Road and Sportscraft concessions that had no discount at all so I imagine they will have been removed now this is on.

In saying that though an extra 50% off not bad considering they still had a lot of Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy etc. And a couple of Breville coffee machines last week as well which would be good with extra 50% off.

It’s a shame it’s closing, such a very nice looking store, it reminded me of West Lakes SA.

  • David Jones is terrible went to the macquarie center one for the boxing day sale. Was so quiet, then went to Myer and it was packed. With staff putting out more things for sale

    • +2

Myer has affordable, if expensive, options. You have to actually be wealthy to afford DJ.

  • +4

    Well, not surprised.

As some other commentators might have subtly hinted, they got bought out by the Dick Smith killers Anchorage Capital.

Westfield and other prime lease have no love for Anchorage, that one I'm going to be subtle about.

Something something DS, leases and almost spoiling the sale from Woolworths SA to Anchorage due to no confidence in paying said leases.

    • +3

They pumped and dumped DIck Smith.
They killed off Scott’s Refrigerated Logistics.
They reportedly bought DJ at a 75% discount, it would be hard for them to pump and dump ala Dick Smith style. They are not putting money into DJ. So hard to see what their plans are

      • they are corporate vultures like Bain Capital.
At one point in the future they'll re-list DJ's on the Stock Exchange and make themselves a killing in the process and leave the poor uneducated investors high and dry.

  • +5

Burwood has a lot of women's clothes on clearance. Not much else

    • +2

Thanks for the intel, saved me popping over during my lunch break

  • +4

It's a shame, but not surprised at all. The whole department store experience is dying and tech savvy shoppers are more inclined to look for deals from all over the web rather than the DJ store. I mean, why would you if the prices are worse locally, right?

While Myer's always seemingly on sale and cheapening its brand a bit in the process, I think it's probably working better for them in terms of sales figures.

Still, very interested to see where this will go in the near future. Wonder who will fold first, DJ or Myer?

    • +1

There is a niche to be filled, stores that offers a wide range of brands so people can and mix and match, trying on different items at the same store. Instead of going to multiple stores. But this only works for the major flagship stores where they actually carry the wide range of brands. So pretty much all the smaller suburban stores have absolutely no place at all, and will all go bye bye. Thing is, once they only got the flagship stores left, will they still have the buying power and economies of scales to remain competitive.

  • +7

Nothing Homes and Electrical in Eastland

    • Any nice style or brand clothing left (ie Ralph Lauren)? Thanks. Or maybe better question is, did you get anything?

      • Sorry didn't check clothing but there arent much left on the rack

      • 100% staff and family/friends of staff would have first pick, I reckon.

        • The good stuff just goes to other stores like Chadstone

  • +1

Could I get cheap Houndstooth wallpaper?

  • Pretty much nothing worth buying

  • +3

Nothing but leftover garbage is 50% off at Burwood. Not sure about the other sites.

  • +3

A large portion of stocks are not 50% off in Eastland. Waste of time to have a look.

    • +1

Can confirm this is accurate. Most homewares and appliances were blue ticketed which is not reduced any further. Was a struggle to find anything that was further 50%

    • +2

Can confirm that Eastland was 100% waste of time with better markdowns at a standard non-closing DJ's..

  • +3

Went to Burwood, not worth my while. Nothing much on clearance to be eligibl for this deal. The few things that are on clearance are not worth looking at…what a beat up!

  • +1

Besides plenty of bras in the women's section, I didn't see anything useful at Chatswood.

Oh there's some Stokke baby basinet for the pram for like $165 each. Didn't pay any attention what colour are they though…I thought that's cheap.

Men's were a similar story; Polo have all been raided unless you're XS or XXL.

The only somewhat reasonable thing (IMHO) are the ex-display mattresses. Picked up a $8k Tempur for $2.4k delivered.

    • Can confirm, there's not much at Chatswood unless you're a giant, in a need of baby basinets, or very expensive mattresses.

  • +3

In all honesty I’m not sure what these stores are anymore. When I was a kid they were a one stop shop where you bought almost everything most people would need. They even had the Myer cafeteria; which was a step up from the Coles cafeteria. Their product selections, and store footprint, has got smaller and smaller. They were anchor stores for major shopping centres but these places no longer need them. Chadstone has turned into its own shopping village with a whole section of restaurants.

I have no idea what their future is. I buy the odd thing from them now and again. If they price match I prefer to buy from them rather than an online store. I use their loos if I’m in the city. I’m not sure if they still do the service but it used to be worth going to their underwear section to get a properly fitted bra. Left to their own devices most women haven’t got a clue.

  • -1

    Any bargains?

  • Went to Eastland at 4 pm and it was a disappointment.

True bargains are about 5-6 racks by the entrance. Cheap clothing, bras, 2022 diary, Calvin Klein shirt for $10. Most good items were already gone..

Some items like coffee plungers, pyrex etc were 40% full price. Some toys 30% for 2 items and most area are empty. Very disappointing overall.

Wouldn't surprise me if they do final discounting before closing their door for good

  • Eastland other itens kitchenware already jacked up, even with off still over other shops when I searched online

  • -4

Is there free parking at the burwood or chatswood stores?

    • -1

you can easily google this… and yes

      • +1

Going by their post history, it seems they are incapable of Googling.

        • +1

lol their post history is hilarious, talk about someone who takes and takes and takes

  • the staff at DJ's Bondi junction tell me this branch is 'closing' this year too. In inverted commas because it's too early to know if it's the whole multi-floor shop, or just some of it. I've bought plenty of stuff there in recent years, but on sale, and often in the food hall. There were assurances when Anchorage were buying of 'fabulous revamps', but typically, nothing good has happened.

    • +2

Only the Foodhall is closing. No way would they close the store and make all those poor Eastern Suburbs people travel the six kilometres to the city to shop at DJs

  • plzzzz dont waste your time i went to Burwood there was a sad table with items that were 50% off and the things had half the items missing
