  • damnit, I bought from OW for $10 more less than a month ago, and even that was a bargain!

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/80348

I wonder if they do that within-30-days refund difference thing? doubt it…

  • It can be delivered free in metro area, just checked.

  • Easily the best deal on 2TB ATM, and yeah…recently bought and already depreciated.

But good to see pricing finally becoming cheaper. Free metro delivery, even better.

  • good bargain, but most of them get out of stock!

  • Note also they have a seagate USB3 2tb for the same

cant like this bargain as there isn't any stock within 30km of me =(

    good find though

    • Where you live doesn't make it any less of a bargain…

  • bought 4 in the last 3 weeks at $10 more .. still a bargain

note that these have Western Digital hard drives YAY :)

  • Good for shucking

  • Which one is better? HP or Seagate?

    • +1

These HP ones are using Western Digital hard drives, so it's really a matter of WD vs Seagate. I've had good experiences with WD, and bad experiences with Seagate myself, but your mileage may vary.

"Found one more bargain before go to bed."

    I wholeheartedly endorse this behavior!

In fact, we should all teach our kids that they need to find at least one bargain before they go to bed each night, otherwise Gerry Harvey will visit them while they're asleep and steal their pocket money.

bought this last month at $109 at OW. by the way, for those who are interested, it's actually WD hard drive in a HP case. warranty is with WD.

    • Are they the type that is fine for RAID-5?

      • Not really. The WD drives recommended for RAID are the RE4 model drives or Velociraptors.

  • HP is out of stock

  • Is it just me or it's real hard to find there hard drive in store everytime?

  • Thanks a bunch!

Took a 40 minute drive and got one at Old Guildford. I phoned them an hour ago, and they said they had 13 in stock; well at most 12 now since I bought one.

Didn't you spend more in fuel then you probably saved on the deal?…

His or her (Beediar) desire to get a good bargain at any distance was priceless…..i think this is an ozbargainer way of life hahaha

  • I got one of these last time for $109 and was very happy with my purchase. Quality drive and attractive enclosure. Great deal at $99!

  • Damn! got all excited as I thought it was a portable drive, I'll hold off until the USB powered ones get to this price point, anytime soon I think. The sea gate expansion for the same price an d still in stock has a better look in my opinion.

    • Cheapest USB powered drive I can find is this one:
      http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/hdtb110ak3ba-toshiba-can…
1tb usb3 portable drive for under $90, I bought it the other day to use in my PS3. The drive inside is a Fujitsu.
Case is one that you just have to stick a thin object into the side and lever open, the clips pop out nice and easy and click back in afterwards so you could always put it back in the case if you need to claim warranty. I just put a usb2 western digital I had lying around into the case so it got upgraded to usb3 :) The Fujitsu drive fit inside PS3 no problem and working good.

is it possible to take the HDD out from the casing and use it as internal?

    • +1

I've removed both 2.5 and 3.5 inch drives from the enclosures and used no problem. Be aware that you will most likely be voiding any warranties though.

  • plenty of stock at Highpoint, got meself one, nice one!!!

  • Got Good Guys in Morayfield Qld to price match Officeworks at $98. Plenty of stock there.

  • Good deal.

Good deal. Picked up one at QV-Vic plus I got 5% off via ING.

  • Be great if it wasn't for the proprietary malware. Is there a way to permanently disable the back-up software? Easier just to buy a plug-n-play drive.

    • Reformat the drive?

      • I think the back-up software is on a chip in the enclosure. I think it re-installs after a format. I may be wrong but that has been my experience with other similar drives.

        • In the past sometimes the software used to be on a separate partition on the disk that couldn't be erased, but in the most recent 2TB drive I bought about a year ago, a Seagate, it was just a normal directory that could be ignored or deleted. Do a search for this model to see what people's experiences have been. You may be pleasantly surprised.

        • The information I had found that led me to ask my original question was about the USB 2.0 version of this drive. I'll check out the HP website as well. I can't see the value if it's a large effort though. I few dollars more to avoid the issue would be my preference. I understand these are supposed to be idiot proof back-up devices and they may be but they aren't good general storage devices if they are set-up this way.

        • They're probably just normal USB 3.0 drives with some thrown-in software on the disk. You could just ignore or delete the software and then it's no more hassle to use than a normal disk. Formatting the disk just makes sure the software is gone. In my case I formatted it because I was going to use it with Linux and also wanted to align the partition to a 8kB boundary, but that's not an issue for you.

Also see the comments above from people intending to throw away the case to use the drive. That indicates it's just a normal drive with a case and some software you don't want.

        • This was the whirlpool comment I was going by:
"I reformatted it, erasing the simplesave program, i didn't use it at all, seemed pretty useless for me. But some 'HP Launcher' drive appears when the HD is plugged in, but it doesn't seem to do anything so you can just ignore it."
So it seems you are right that formatting will indeed remove enough to disable the back-up software.

  • Call me crazy but I really thought a mate just bought a 3TB HP USB 3.0 for $99 at OW Eliz Melb CBD…

      care to scan the receipt?

  • What kinda WD Drive it uses? Green?

    • I'd say Blue to cut costs

  • Fantastic, thanks. Officeworks Traralgon had a few of them availabile.
