Depends on what you want it for, as a NAS it's got more than enough grunt, fine to store your media for Plex.. ect.., but sure not enough CPU for Transcoding 4k.
Even has enough grunt and memory to run a few containers, but yes you are not going to have enough CPU or RAM for this to replace a decent hosting platform.
Given inflation ect… this price seems good for anyone wanting a low power\energy efficient NAS.
I personally just build and use my own, but this is perfect for anyone that wants to click and deploy in a good form factor.

Just for opening files, watching movies and backing up important shit. It's good for that right?

        • +4

          For sure.

        • I mean my 10 year old synology NAS can do that just fine. Some people want faster CPU for transcoding etc.

      • not enough CPU for Transcoding 4k

It has qsv hardware acceleration, which shouldn't have an issue with transcoding supported formats.

        • +1

Agree with most formats should be okay, but in the reviews (same CPU but higher RAM), the unit struggled with some of the 4K formats.
If you care about quality, you shouldn't be transcoding anyway…:)

My Plex get's so little use these days since I moved to Stremio and Real-debrid anyway.

    • It's a NAS, not expecting/needing that much though

    • +5

The N4505 seems to be well suited as a basic Plex machine though. More than enough for a family to serve their needs IMO. I've got a TS-464 which is more than enough for my media needs

      https://nascompares.com/guide/qnap-ts-262-4k-plex-nas-tests/

      • interesting, I'm little confused by edge cases

        Plex Test 3 – QNAP TS-262 NAS Plex Test – IMAX 4K H.264 10bit 80Mbps MKV Fail

        Plex Test 4 – QNAP TS-262 NAS Plex Test – 4K H.264 8bit 16Mbps MP4 Poor

        Plex Test 5 – QNAP TS-262 NAS Plex Test – 4K UHD HEVC h.265 8bit 60Mbps MKV Pass

I'd expect 5 to be a struggle but instead struggles with 4 so must handle HEVC and 8/10bit better than 264

  • Can't beat the price $258.75 though that was for 1GB ram.
Waiting for 4 bay NAS around this price.

    • When was this?

    • RAM is upgradable, in which case I would take the lower price 1GB.

      • Are you sure the ram is upgradable on QNAP TS-431K ?

        • 431K - No

          431KX - Yes

        • Sorry was referring to the model in this deal QNAP TS-462. Congo didn't mention the earlier deal was for a QNAP TS-431K which the RAM isn't upgradable as it was soldered to the MB.

          • @UltimateAI: According to QNAP's website, this model can be upgraded to 16Gb RAM.

            • @Offler: The model in this deal can, the message I replied to was for the k model which isn’t upgradable.

I have one of this only turned on for few hours. pm me if you interested. melbourne pickup

FYI: These also officially support the PCIe M.2 version of the Google Coral (M.2-2280-B-M-S3), and RAM is upgradable, so potentially a great option to run CodeProjectAI under docker.

  • Just thinking, instead of getting these, why not pick something like Tny or Micro PC like below
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/825051
& connect hard drives via USB-C hub, would serve alot other purposes as well

4 bays NAS, 1 disk can fail and you can recover from it.
In JBOD (PC+4 external USB drives) setup, if one disk fail you would loss all the data on that drive.

Also JBOD would have 4 smaller drives with different drive letters (but you can add them to libraries if using windows), where as NAS you would see only one large drive in your OS.

      • Also space, these NAS are compact, nicer than having a mini pc with 5 external drives.
They would be more engery efficient too.

Although I do something similar for MOST, this DEAL offers a higher level of resiliency and usability to any DIY option.
DIY, heck there are at least 6 good options for OS alone and many others. Then you need to pick a file system. DIY ZFS is the most reliable but you need a metric crap ton of ram to get even close to the performance on the NAS in this deal. This NAS point and click and you have some containers running, pi-hole\ad-guard ect.
As consumer devices, these also include EXCELLENT, RELIABLE cloud backup options.

TrueNAS: Open-source, reliable, and feature-rich NAS OS with ZFS support for data integrity and redundancy. Requires some technical knowledge for setup and maintenance.
OpenMediaVault: User-friendly web interface, supports various plugins and add-ons, and works well with minimal hardware requirements. Good for beginners but may lack advanced features.
Unraid: Offers flexible storage management with disk pooling and hot-swappable drives, ideal for media streaming and home theater PCs. Paid license required for more than 3 drives.
FreeNAS: Similar to TrueNAS, but built on FreeBSD. Good for experienced users, offering a command-line focused interface.
Windows: Yeah we all know windows, many options here from Storage Spaces, to default parity. Fast and when head-less (no GUI) low RAM requirements
      Linux: Pick your own flavour

Man, that Mwave deal of $373 was such good value. Shame I didn't start looking into NAS boxes until a month ago.
Wonder if something similar will come around again…

  • +1

Any Micro G8 or G10 deal? Those really much much better……

  • After QLocker!!! QNAP NEVER AGAIN! Google Qnap QLocker!

  • Using the 6-bay version, stuck in some old laptop ram in and can confirm it runs Plex fine. But most of my stuff is 1k.
