  • The box weighs about 4 kilos. Cheapest alternate I could find was at Mil Sims http://www.milsims.com.au/node/119252 for $65 plus shipping.

So.. having never heard of this game and only reading the 'loose' description above and on two other sites … is this just essentially a risk clone or is it something unique (maybe with different class types for military units)

OK looks like Risk on steriods. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEdzoBWJpbo

Haven't played the game myself, but boardgamegeek is my comprehensive go to for any board game advice:

    http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/221/ikusa

Ratings and rank are decent. Comes with lots of plastic pieces, even including spare units in case you lose some. A wargame in the spirit of Risk with more depth.

Hope that helps someone considering buying the game make an informed choice.

Edit: On the subject of board games, Axis and Allies 1941 is a really cheap boardgame of a similar strain. Milsims sells it for $25+flat rate shipping (http://milsims.com.au/node/123358). It's a watered down, accessible and quicker to play version of A&A. Also plays along the lines of Risk, but with deeper strategy (armies consist of various types of units, such as battleships/tanks/infantry) and less units. I have a copy, and it is plenty fun. The low cost is reflected in the lack of plastic/cardboard pieces in the box though, as the game plays with very few units on the board at any time. I'm not affiliated with any store/company, just thought people might enjoy this game.

  • This is an awesome board game. Played it to death as a kid and teenager.

You need A LOT of time to play it though - takes ages…

I have always wondered why no-one has ported this to PC. A PC version would save all the setup time and I;d definitely buy it…

This was originally released in a series of games that included Fortress America (pretty crap) and Axis and Allies (very good).

  • Golly, the last time I played a board game like this was in high school, which was like way back in the Medieval Ages.

  • What's the difference between the Ikusa vs Shogun vs Samurai Swords versions? Haven't played any of them and am just wondering if it's worth getting this version?

Sounds like a very indepth/long playing game though - would this be therefore a no no for non-board game enthusiasts i.e. the bulk of those who get bored sitting down at anything with a huge amount of depth/thinking?

I think the main difference is only in the name due to licensing and manufacturer. E.g., it was called Shogun when Milton Bradley was the manufacturer?

I used to play this years ago. It is a great game, but it does take a while.

I would suggest you have a look at the Gameboard Geek link above, down the bottom there should be some reviews in the forum.
