Travel Card for USA / Mexico

With Citibank ditching Australia and I have been using their debit card for overseas travel for years……What is everyone switching over to now?. Will not use the NAB card we have been given in exchange for the Citi bank cards.

TIA

  • Is ING not still good?

why wouldn't you use the completely fee free nab card? it replicates everything you had with Citi but has a much improved internet banking, transaction data and other platform advantages.

the only reason you would seek an alternative — ING, Macquarie, UBank et al - is because you already have a Visa card alternative vs Citi's Mastercard.

Why would I use a card that charges 3% on all international transactions. I never paid 3% on international transactions on my Citi Bank card. One could only imagine how poor the exchange rate they will give you on those transactions.

The NAB card , transferred from Citibank Plus, retains the fee free transactions that OzBargineers all love. -

        Overseas access
        NAB Visa Debit card
        ATM cash withdrawal Fee waived
        Balance enquiry Fee waived
        International transaction fee Fee waived

        • I stand corrected

          • @kiwimex: A bit early for that I think. I’m actually overseas and no, this NAB is NOT working like the citi is.

            • @rakka: Yeah I kinda figured as much….always had nothing but issues with anything out of Australia. The land of the free and getting shafted by your bank!

            • @rakka: What issues have you encountered using your new NAB visa debit card overseas?

      • Did you read the variation PDS that was sent to you with the card?
It's fee-free to use your new NAB card overseas.

Pair it with an Up Card or a Macquarie debit card and/or a Bendigo B-ready credit card on the Mastercard network and you will be able to pay everywhere at the best possible rate via Visa or Mastercard.

        • I stand corrected

        • It is fee free but whereas before your money was exchanged at the Mastercard fx rate (close to wholesale mids), now it is retail rates (3% worse).

At least that is how I read it.

    • oops my apologies i stand corrected.

Dont believe what people are regurgitating from NAB.

Just received the NAB card and attempted to withdraw some cash at an ATM in Japan (7-11 ATM always free with citi).

Not only was I only allowed to withdraw multiples of 10000yen ($100 aud ish), it also wanted me to pay a 100yen fee (about a dollar).

Not the end of the world but compared to the Citi, I think it’s trash. I didn’t even go ahead with the withdrawal so can’t comment on the rate.

(Also posted this in a couple other nab citi related threads)

I think it’s something to do with the agreements that Citi had in place with banks/ATMs, does not seem to carry over to the NAB card and no surprise really.

    • I understand that 7-11 ATMs are fee free for cash withdrawal for Mastercard (i.e. former Citi Plus debit card + others), but charge fee for Visa (i.e. new NAB debit card). Just make sure you take both Visa and Mastercard branded cards.

    • Well not the end of the world but still $10 for every $1000.

In the USA I would goto any servo ATM and take $1000 USD at a time out fee free on my Citibank debit card, along with a decent exchange rate.

Everything is supposed to be easier in the digital age, but all the banking institutions are interested in is grabbing fees every single step of the way.
