They seem to have good prices on Ubiquiti gear with free shipping as well. Just picked up a dream router for now as I have no fiber in my area.

  • Never heard of this company. Are they an approved reseller of Ubiquiti? Otherwise you may have warranty issues

    • Only Unifi online store has 2 year warranty and other reseller has 1 year

They are a NZ company with a AU presence. pbtech.co.nz NZ's largest computer retailer

You seem to get better prices over there from our NZ companies than we do

My two month old UDMPro just bricked itself and Ubiquiti want me to RMA it back to the states and pay for shipping.
So they expect me to pay for shipping to the states, wait for them to receive it and test it, then send back a new unit.
Pretty annoying. Have contacted Wireless1 for a refund so I can just buy it again.

Just an FYI for anyone buying these.
    It's a well known fault.

    • Damn that was a worry to read I just setup the dream machine SE in my home network with the access points should have brought local instead of eBay.

      Seems like they brick easy

Good Luck - I had to submit a complaint to NSW Fair Trading about Wireless1 not honouring warranty.
I didn't bother waiting and posted my UDM to the states myself (~$65 registered post).
Very annoying, I would not buy Ubiquiti if I had my time again.
Maybe in a couple of years I'll upgrade completely to a different brand.

      • YIKES! That's a big worry as I also bought mine from Wireless1 and they are supposed to be an official reseller. Why were they not honouring the warranty?

If they behave like that I am definitely not buying anything from there again

      • Make sure you lodge a complaint with the ACCC too, they’re the ones who will pursue retailers trying to palm warranty issues off on manufacturers. If this is what Wireless 1 have done then they’re pretty stupid, a number of instances of retailers in the IT space getting smashed with serious fines.

    • Opened this deal with the intention of buying it and some new Unifi APs, but the issues and complications with Ubiquiti equipment just keep increasing. In the last couple of weeks we’ve had Protect publishing your videos, brand new UDMs being semi-bricked and now this.

Think I might go Aruba Instant-On and then get into OPNsense if I need more router/firewall than that provides, until they do their own in the Instant-On range.

      • Is Aruba cloud based management only, like Google Nest Wifi? I just moved from Google Nest Wifi to Ubiquiti since I got tired of having to use the Google Home app to change the very limited settings of the Nest wifi.

        • For the APs it is. I don’t mind that so much, I currently have it with my Eero setup, but if the system is reliable then you shouldn’t need to access the management interface too often, and the wifi network still operates when it can’t access the cloud. Their managed switches have a local mode (with greater functionality than the cloud interface).

I just want a reliable setup across the whole home/levels with good roaming, however Eero is just too basic and spotty (plus it doesn’t support POE so hard to place the units wherever I want/need to).

What do people do with these? What is a router not enough for? And why can’t you get another $10-20 router off market place to have more ports if that’s what you are after?

    • +2

Making a network with the unifi eco system, with their switches, access points, cameras etc.

      • Not to forget the high power bills

        • Most network gear is very minimal power draw - unless you're using giant Enterprise switches, then the passively cooled items barely draw anything.

Thanks! I am still trying to understand. I’ll be honest this doesn’t quite make me understand but I guess these are Apple for networking?

I am having hard time understanding because I have 4-5 wired connections to computers and steam devices and everything else is on wifi and works perfectly well, I never have to think about anything it’s all transparent to me once set up. What does this or unifi offer on top of that?

        • Just google it.
And no, these are not the Apple of networking lol.

It's business grade equipment that we are installing in our homes.
Consumer grade equipment doesn't come close to this kit.

        • i used it as i have a smart home..

          • @helldoodle: I do too, cameras, lamps and I can add whatever else I like. Never at any point I needed a switch?

            • +3

@Larsson: Without going into too many details. Reasons you might buy something like this:

              • you have a large house and want multiple access points (wired) that all work seamlessly with one another

              • you want cameras that are PoE and record 24/7 (I’m assuming your cameras that you mention are battery, wifi ones that record movement, but don’t record 24/7)

              • you want everything in the Unifi ecosystem. Unifi is frequently compared to Apple with regards to the UI, setup etc which is all very slick.

              • @dirkgonnadirk: Thanks mate! I really appreciate the answers. I am actually curious and wondering how I can utilise so that’s why I ask. But I do want to still play devils advocate:

*$20 Telstra modem did access point perfectly fine for me
*my cameras are wired and wifi but so is PoE? Nothing special about PoE as I understand?
*do agree interface important enough to get me to buy sth like this. But then what is the guy over the first reply about saying “ Just google it.
And no, these are not the Apple of networking lol.” What’s he/she on about?

                • @Larsson: if you are doing PoE you are not doing wireless, as my house runs off a battery if there is a power loss, so does my security system, i dont have that many "wireless" things in my house apart from zwave and some zigbee things, one of the best networking solutions would be CISCO but UNIFI is like CISCO for dummies, and your telstra modem is for entry level, if you dont need it or want it ok then move on, people who do want it or need it then sure, my friends farm uses unifi to get camera and pump access to each of his water points, a telstra router wont do that.

              • +1

@dirkgonnadirk: Another big reason for me was the ability to create VLANs and manage traffic with custom firewall rules. The nice GUI of Unifi is also great compared to a regular router.

The dream machine is a ubiquiti cloud controller, router, firewall, nvr etc all in one.
Perfect for high performance home network or small business.

  • Bad idea to buy this without a rack?
I live in a small unit so finding a home may be tricky, but I've got a couple raspberry pis running which it would be nice to move onto PoE to free up those power outlets (also vlan support for IoT devices, etc.)

    • +1

I'd say you can install it without a rack, but might be worth looking into a small wall-mounted cabinet mount from gumtree or facebook market place.

If money is no object, it might be worth looking into the unifi dream wall instead.

    • I'm just using a UDM myself..have no need for this rack version. I pair it with a wifi 6 AP.

Good price. Bought similar over Black Friday at 924$.

Can also recommend streakwave - I bought a fair bit of unifi gear from them and got pretty good prices over the phone. Found out later they’re the official distributors.

  • Finally bought, been putting it off for a while as my 10-year-old Netgear R7000 is still working fine, though with my increased hosehold usage I thought it would be best to upgrade and go full Unifi as I already have the 16 port POE switch.
