Ubiquiti Dream Machine Special Edition UDM-SE $927.20 ($904.20 eBay Plus) Delivered @ Computer Alliance eBay AU

130
BF20AUBF22AU

It is not the cheapest the UDM-SE has been, but seems to be the best deal at the moment. Still trying to decide if it is worth getting the UDM-SE over the UDM-P which is going for $687.20 ($670.02 ebay Plus):

The UDM-SE comes with the following three extras compared to the UDM-P:

  • 2.5G WAN (ethernet)
  • 8 PoE ports (2 of which are PoE+ I believe)
  • 128GB SSD (for recording camera video)

  • Building a house and thinking about getting this, need to research at some point the best set up.
    Only a 300m2 3x2

    • I just put a single u6-pro in my 240m2 house and it’s amazing. Highly recommend it.

I replaced a couple of other APs with the one and it’s far faster & better signal.

      • Good to know!
Still a year to go until the house is finished so I’ll research closer to it for sure

Remember the times when the UDM-P was around $400 a few years ago? How times have changed.

FWIW, I find the UDM-SE to be a bit of a rort - not having PoE on the UDM-P was always baffling to me. Out of the features of the UDM-SE, only the PoE would be useful - 2.5G WAN will never be useful for home use, and the 128GB SSD is a bit moot (you'll end up needing a big HDD or SSD anyway).

I think it really comes down to how many PoE devices you want to run. If it's just 1 - 2 APs, then you can easily just run PoE injectors on the switch side.

    • I agree that the 128GB SSD could have been omitted to save cost. Seems pointless, unless you can install apps etc. on it.
I wonder if the 2.5G WAN may be a good idea to have a bit of headroom if you have 1Gb NBN fibre? Usually 1Gb LAN means a bit less. If you use a 2.5G WAN port, maybe you could squeeze out a few more Gbps from the fibre.

      • With the UDMP it has a SFP+ WAN port too. Which you can stick a 10gig Ethernet SFP+ module in if you need faster WAN speeds in the future.

Nope, the connection from the NBN fibre box is 1 Gbps, so you won't benefit from the 2.5 Gbps WAN port.

        • Speeds faster than Gigabit are coming.

          • @Twix: not if the liberal party has anything to say about it, 10Mbps is enough for the future

      • No you can't squeeze more out of a Gigabit connection with 2.5G WAN. The max is 990Mbps. You have to wait for 2.5G and faster speed tiers.

  • Be aware, computer alliance is not in Ubiquiti authorised distributors list, you MIGHT get warranty issues, not 100% sure.

    • +1

I went though an RMA with wirelessone. Was a complete f around because I tried to RMA direct with uboquiti who wasted my time so badly due to wireless one not being a 'licensed distributor'.

Just make sure you go direct to computer Alliance with any RMA / warranty issues. They will likely go through a third party importer who is a licenced distributor and can lodge the claim.

      • or you can just report them to the ACCC, as the importer the manufacturer and the retailer all have to provide guarantee in australia

        • WirelessOne eventually sent me a brand new camera even though it took a long time. I would say this is more of a problem with Ubiquiti not having proper distribution set up in Australia. I would probably rather go with the Computer Alliance or WirelessOne and save 30% on the purchase price. Just be aware you will have to do a convoluted returns process if something goes wrong, and you most likely will not be able to take advantage of a direct manufacturer return. Ubiquiti troubleshooted with me for like 5 weeks before telling me I wasn't allowed to lodge the return.

  • The best price I have seen for the SE over the last few months is about $920 so this is indeed a deal.

Honestly the drive is not much of an addon - if you are using this for security then you will want and need a bigger drive in the drive bay anyway.

The POE however is great if you are doing cameras of wifi off this device (and why else buy one) then it is just the one cable right to these ports. 2 wifi and six cameras would fit and be decent coverage for most households I was guess.

I would only go the Pro if you for some reason had not intention of using the POE OR you needed more the the 8 slots and had to buy a POE switch anyway… but in the case of a lot of cameras you might still want the SE for the faster WAN.. maybe

The plan is to use 1-2 PoE ports for Wifi APs. I already have a Reolink NVR for PoE cameras. (Reolink is so much better value than Ubiquiti cameras, and has great image quality and nice software.) Running PoE injectors seems like an afterthought rather than a plan, so PoE on the UDM would be nice.

  • For a new build house, I'm considering the combination of either a UDM-SE + a 16-lite-poe switch OR a UDM-pro + USW-24-poe switch. Combined with 3 APs spread over a fair sized double storey house. Have a total of around 10 Poe devices.
Any thoughts on which option might be better or pros/cons? Was looking to rack mount but there are 3d printed mounts for the lite switch too. Thanks.

    • We're in a similar situation. Building a two storey house and looking at network options. I'd be interested in people's views too. Currently thinking reolink cameras with an NVR which will take care of most of the Poe needs. Only Poe likely would then be a couple of APs.

Bought one from this listing on Thursday, they have no stock in warehouse and refunded me.

    • Seriously? Did they say how long delivery would be?

Have copied the message I got below:

        Hi,

I'm terribly sorry but I'm afraid we have run into some trouble with this order.
The stock tracking in our warehouse has been found to be unfit for sale, and we don't have any further units arriving in a reasonable timeframe.

I've refunded this order for you, and you have my apologies we couldn't complete this order.

        Best Regards,
        James

I actually thought you chose to get a refund because they couldn't deliver in a reasonable time. But they just said they can't get any. Why is their listing still up then?

          • @trippy: Would have waited but yeah, no choice.

I re-purchased from Sydneytec for $939, already shipped.

    • Classic CA

  • UXG Lite just launched at a lower price point, which may suffice for most home use cases.

    • +1

It's terrible value though, at around $300 AUD (e.g. here https://ubiquitistore.com.au/product/uxg-lite-ubiquiti-gatew…).

Given that you'll also need a CloudKey (around $300), and a switch (e.g. an 8-port USW-LITE-8-POE for $250), you're already in for $850, and I'd just rather the convenience of an all-in-one solution like the UDM-SE for $920, right?

      • You don't need a Cloud key - these can be managed from a computer running the management console - and assuming you were using the USG until now, then you already have a switch.

This is a drop-in replacement for the USG.

It's great value compared to the UXG Pro which is $800 and only really adds 10GbE and dual-WAN https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/294998251924

  • I was going to post this as a deal earlier in the week, but honestly didn't think it was much of a bargain. These could be picked up as low as $810 back in March and ~$750 last year. I've been waiting for months to buy one, hoping they would drop below $900, but finally had to pull the trigger.

I had more luck with the Ubiquiti APs and bought the U6-LITE and U6-Pro from Wireless1 yesterday for $116 and $204 respectively, with the eBay+ShopBack+Westpac discounts.

Now I'm thinking I've gone overboard with all the hardware and maybe I should return the SE and buy a UXG Lite + USW-LITE-8-POE.

    • But the UXG lite does not have a built in Unifi controller right? So you will also need a cloud key.

      • That's correct. You would need a cloud key or have a spare machine acting as a self-hosted UniFi network server. Considering all this, it probably makes the UDM-Pro a better buy and you just add some PoE injectors as required. The UDP-Pros on eBay are discounted to around ~$670.

    • Did you manage to get one from Computer Alliance?

      • +1

Yeah ordered on Thursday and it arrived yesterday.

    It's $880 here using HGTNOV. (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/144559969215?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…)

Stack with 6% Ebay exchange giftcards and cashback gets it down closer to $800

    • Thanks! I decided to go with this one. It is about $200 more than the UDM-Pro, which is approximately what the cheapest PoE switch would cost.

    • Thanks how do I stack?

      • You can purchase discounted exchange giftcard and convert them to eBay gift cards to pay for the discounted item.
Refer this post and the comments from others (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/811458).
Don't forget to utilise any of eligible active cashback offers prior to paying.

        • Thanks mango!

    • Thanks for that. Got it down to about $820. Not sure if I’ll get any ShopBack credit. That HGTNOV was a great code to pull out.

    • I ordered it from Digilife on Sunday and they shipped it on Monday morning, so they must have them in stock.

      • I ordered this morning and just got a shipping confirmation

  • Price increased $40, HGTNOV will bring it down to $920

Futu has the 22$ off (Plus) which takes it down to $900.90. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334466527912

      • Thanks, I don't have eBay plus though, total comes to $924

Guess is probably worthwhile getting Ebay plus for $9.99 for 1 year!
