is this better than 980 pro?

    • +3

no, but cheaper than 980 pro

      Come on mate.

A 2 second google would of answered that no.

      Jesus

      • I did and it did not give a concrete answer. where did you get your 2 second google from? versus.com? a site that pits stats against each other without real world usage review? come on mate

        • +3

It's a not solid question who's answer depends on your usage scenario.

          1. 980 Pro isn't sold in 4tb
          2. 980 Pro has dram buffer, this does not.
          3. The above does not particular matter unless you like extended writes or stick it in a PS5 (PS5 does not support HMB, but it will probably work all the same)
          4. YMTC flash makes some people go reeeeeeeeee because of reliability concerns with their previous generation products. (This uses the newer 232 layer YMTC flash, which I don't suppose hasn't been out long enough for anyone to identify reliability issues anyway)
          • @Namidairo: yup. deciding if I will stick a 2TB 980 pro which is 3 yrs old vs 4TB NM790 which is newer on a ps5. I won't fill 2TB of space anyway so the size won't matter much in my scenario. more of speed and reliability

              @Brakus: nm790 is fine for ps5 usage.

              • @povogamer: I know…. just wanted to check if this is better than 980 pro considering pros and cons (new, 4tb, dramless, Read 7,400 MBps, Write 6,500 MBps vs old, 2tb, dram, Read 7,000 MBps, Write 5,100 MBps). Based on speed, nm790 seems better

Given 980 pro has the same price but it's 2TB (and there are no 4TB 980 pros), one can say this is so much better.

As for performance, the gut feeling indicates: not better.

I asked bec 980 pro was released on 2020 and nm790 this year. One would think 3 years of tech would make a difference.

And then I go and spoil it all by saying somethin' stupid like TBW…

    :3

    • +2

      No.

      Does it work in ps5.

Holy hell any time an ssd is posted its asked hahaha

      • +1

U will never use its tbw unless ur downloading like every remux on usenet in existance

I have a samsung 970 evo. Its tbw was 600. And its has 1000tb wtiten to it with no performance drop.

And thatstill took 5 years at over 70gb a day writing to it.

Unoess ur doing like 50gb writes every day the tbw is of no concern.

The controllers likely to die from a voltage spike long before ths nand cells give out

        • Just trying to make sense out of @Bunnyburger 's comment.

@pizzaguy: It's great I was just poking fun at the standard reservations people have when buying SSDs

    ☝️

SSD Buying guide, it's easy way to tell if the SSD you're about to buy is entry level or high end.

NM790 is mid-range. $279 is not really an amazing price though, it's not low enough for it to be an impulse buy. Recommend waiting for better deals if you don't need it today.

Installed this as a 2nd drive in my legion. Reads at 7000, writes at 6500MB/s.

    Nice drive.

  • i'm thinking of getting this. would you guys recommend buying the heat sync version? (will go on MB nvme slot)

    • I have the one without the heatsink on a board with an inbuilt heatsink. It'll void your warranty but you basically need to remove the label on this version as it's (very stupidly) just a normal label, not one that transfers heat (like on my 980 Pro). Having said that, with it like that, I think max I've seen it (or the 980 Pro for that matter) hit is 52'.

  • Got mine, cloned my boot drive to this. Works very well and is super fast (coming from a Samsung 860 EVO). I'm very happy with this purchase.
