Isn’t this just the standard 10% off that happens to the entire Mac range every few weeks between JB and Good Guys?

Also, M3 Airs are probably coming sometime between January and March.

  • +8

Only 8GB of RAM on a $1619 laptop.

It’s getting a bit old Apple, as much of a fan of the products I am.

@Aureus: Pity I have been Mac user for nearly 15yrs now, my 2013 MacBook pro and 2022 MacBook pro M2 have exactly same specs 8GB of RAM and 512GB HDD, the only difference is M2 has amazing battery life. They lost me when they released this year MacBook pro 14 M3 with 8GB of RAM and 512HDD. How much greedy you can be Apple? I might have been a loyal Apple customer but not anymore. One thing is sure, my next laptop will not be a Mac.

  • There are 16gb M2 airs right? Does JB just not stock them?

    • +2

No, they are CTO in MacBook Air and have to be ordered from Apple. You need to move up to MacBook Pro M3 Max to get more than 8GB in a standard config.

      • +1

Which exempts them (air) from the 10% off mostly

      • Ment M3 Pro, gets you 18GB RAM, the Max gets you 36GB of course.

grab M1 13 incher refurbished from Apple with 16/1tb for $2189 and rejoice. that's a proper machine if you need Apple silicon

Not their fault that English language used practically the same word for completely different materials, making it challenging for anyone with literacy problems and average or below intelligence.

Here are a few examples from other languages:

      German: Silizium vs Silikon
      Spanish: silicio vs silicona
      Finnish: pii vs silikoni
      […]
      English: silicon vs silicone :(

      • +3

        I prefer pii

~$38 difference but you get a physical store you can deal with if you buy from JB. I know which one I'd prefer.

      • +7

apple also have physical stores, no?

        • Can you get those prices you listed at a physical store?

          • @slipperypete: nope, afaik. you can click and collect but i don't think you can buy at those prices in-store.

            • +1

@lachlantula: I mean what’s the difference? The reason you want brick and mortar store is to have a person inside to get help from. When was this ever a problem Apple anyway?

Even if you buy it from JB, wheb you go in with an issue, they’ll just tell you to go to Apple anyways.

              • @Larsson: agreed. i suppose you can haggle with jb staff but .. do they do even do that anymore? and would they do it on macbooks? i doubt it.

      • +1

Well he's shown that this isnt a bargain as its not the cheapest.

      Happens every time.
I guess it’s too difficult to understand that not everyone requires more than that.

      • I had a 8gb + 256gb SSD sony laptop in 2012.

        • And have your needs changed in a laptop?

          • +1

@1r4n14n: web browsers need a lot more grunt than they did a decade ago.

    • Apples 8GB is like having 800GB on anything else;-) Unless you have lots of chrome tabs, open multiple applications, use VMs, video editing etc.

      • +1

Not anymore. The unified memory is used as video memory too, and locally run LLMs are VERY memory intensive

        • Pretty much like a PC with integrated graphics then, only that the RAM is on die.

I have quite a few Macs, you won't be running an LLM on an 8GB Mac too well. Ollama runs quite well on my MBP M3 Pro 18GB though, pretty much the same speed as ChatGPT.

          • @mostlygordon:

pretty much the same speed as ChatGPT.

Excuse my lack of knowledge here but does ChatGPT use much of my computer's processing power or RAM?

            • +1

@slipperypete: ChatGPT is a Web service and uses OpenAI servers. It just uses around the same memory as any other Web page.

            • +1

@slipperypete: No, it uses about the same memory as any other web page. If you run an AI on your own device that’s another story though, you will need quite some power and memory.

          • +1

            @mostlygordon:

Ollama runs quite well on my

ollama is a platform, not a language model and, therefore, does not have its own hardware requirements. The models it can run, do though.
It's perhaps better to stay away from topics you don't fully understand as there might be others here who do.

            • +1

@glade90: If you think I'm running it without a model better you stay away from topics you don't fully understand.

    • I tried base model M1 13 for a month - that's 8/256

and I have concluded that it's plenty for basic scenarios. watching Netflix or apple tv, browsing the webs, writing an email or two, doing consumer level spreadsheets etc. 8gb is fine for that. and you get stellar battery life, great screen and solid build.

at $1200 for M1 13 air it's hard to skip if that's all you do

it's the more demanding things that you'd want to grab a 16 or higher amount of RAM as creative workloads will struggle. but it makes zero sense to choose Air for that - grab refurbished M1 Pro instead, for similar price you're getting much better performance and screen. and ports. and speakers.

      • My only Mac with 8GB is a Mini M1. I don't use it much these days, but it used to regularly choke on me with the spinning beach ball. No such problems with 16GB+.

        • sorry can't comment, haven't seen any spinning stuff on mine unless editing photos, and even then not always

  • Maybe stack with 32

I'll just leave these links to Apple Certified Refurbished:

    MacBook Air 13 M1 16GB 1TB $2189

    MacBook Pro 14 M1 Pro 16GB 512GB $2299

there's not much point buying this gen MacBook Airs if you can have much better specced (16GB RAM at least, and faster dual chip storage) M1 models for less.

m1 -> m2 was incremental, and even m2 -> m3 wasn't much of an upgrade in consumer workloads, m1 models refurbished from Apple direct are awesome value, beating AOC pricing.

    • I agree as I am split between getting the m2 air or m1 pro refurb. I have to say I am attracted to the more slimmer design and better battery backup of the air. One thing to note is that this will be my alt mobile device. If anyone needs a main device, m1 pro refurb is the way to go imo.

      • yeah I need a main device and snatched m1 pro with 16gb and 1tb for $2539

I totally understand, those 13 inch air models are remarkably lightweight. but I was feeling a bit claustrophobic editing photos on that panel

but see 13 m1 with the same memory and storage is just $350 less, and loses performance, speakers, miniled panel, ports, and the only gain is it's slightly more portable..

price diff between m2 and m1 pro will be even less
