Boost Mobile $230 SIM Starter Pack (170GB, 12 Months Expiry) for $180 Delivered @ Lucky Mobile

1150

After the expiry of the recent OzBizTech deal and looking for a Boost deal, spotted Lucky Mobile has this for $180. Although this has been $2 cheaper and with no lightning cable… (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/805945 ), hope this is of interest to those looking for a deal on Boost!

OW Carnegie was happy to pricebeat this down to 171.00 , and with 5x flybuys via OnePass it’s been a good arvo.

Edit : 23/12 - price has jumped up to $189. Mixed results from some users having reported successful price beat at OW, YMMV.

Wondering if there could be better deals for Boxing Day…?

    • Yes please be better

      • +1

There can always be better for OzB

    • +3

      Says $189 (was $230) for 170GB plan as at 7pm 23/12/23.

But a great deal for a FULL Telstra retail network plan

They seem to have a few other mobile plan deals so worth a look

But with a name like "Lucky Mobile" its probably run by some questionable Chinese group

At the bottom of the web page it does advertise thier name is TeleChoice Lucky Mobile

However checking on the Telechoice web site, this store address is listed as "TeleChoice Adelaide" (i.e. not Telechoice Lucky Mobile)
And why are they promoting mobile plans such as Telstra, Boost and Lebara but NOT TeleChoice on thier web page???

And when you Google TeleChoice Lucky Mobile, only their lucky mobile web site comes up.
Nothing linked to the Telechoice web site.

      VERY VERY SUSPICIOUS!

Much better coverage and network reliability too.

Anyone know how long you have to activate these?

    • +2

Usually Boost SIM's have around a 12 month activation expiry, but, if you don't plan on activating in the next couple of months it's probably worth contacting them to find out for sure…

(I notice some ebay sellers are listing these $230 SIMs as 2025 exp, i.e. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/274613561734 , I suspect with Luckymobile being a high volume seller theirs would be the same)

As I discovered, your money is gone if not used within a year of purchase. Because of a month-plus delay by Boost themselves, I decided to get a different annual card, then when that was over, I went to use my boost 365 day card that had arrived in the meantime, it was 'expired'. Short version of story, they wouldn't refund

    • It’s printed on the back of each physical card.

      • +1

How does that answer the questIon?

  • +2

    Activation date ?

  • +1

can you still transfer to another sim and then transfer back? my old yearly boost ended a week ago
    thanks

    • +1

Yep give it a few days then transfer back, question is if it’s worth the hassle and sharing of your information..

      • +1

I don't think it requires few days waiting..

        • +1

Technically no, doesn’t hurt to ensure everything has been propagated.

@apptrack: I tried to transfer back to boost within 10 minutes of porting out without success. I did the transfer on the 11 Nov and I am still unable to get back on to boost.

          • +2

@apptrack: I activated a new sim from boost this morning. I tried online…. "something went wrong". Contacted customer support they put it through, but said it might take 3 days. Then it worked 3 hours later. Just bare in mind that the activations seem to be office hours…

      • +2

I’m sad because I just paid $203 for this on eBay. Got it setup today but it was a bit of a hassle. They push back on the chat saying they can’t activate the new sim card and transfer the number across. I spoke to 2 people. After that I activated the card with a new number then got back on the chat to get them to transfer my number from the old sim to the new one. They said I had to ring up so I did and the guy ended up just transferring the credit from the new card to my old card, which was the ideal outcome so I didn’t need to insert the new card. He said there was a risk of the number getting “stuck” and not being able to be transferred across, it’s been happening lately. All the chat people and him nagged me to just recharge next time rather than buying a new sim. I asked if I could get 160gb with 365 day expiry for $200 and he said yeah, so I dunno, will wait 12 months and see…

But the point is I’m not keen on mucking around to do this again. Will see.

        • +4

Moral of the story is to just port out and back in if already on Boost.

          • @Borg: Yeah might just go that route, I just cbf entering my personal details to another telco to eventually be leaked to hackers. Then again I was part of the Optsarse hack so damage done.

Lucky Mobile states on the landing page for the deal :
    “ Dear buyer
please refer to boost website for $230 prepaid plan: https://boost.com.au/products/230-prepaid-sim

    where Boost notes :
    “Activate by 29 Jan 24.”

    • That’s the extra data you get if activated by 29/01/24.otherwise the sim card won’t expire until the date mentioned (confirmed by boost) on the pack itself. Last year I bought one on ebay and then called boost as I wasn’t going to activate it yet. Thanks

    • Did you receive your bonus flybuys points? I didn’t.

  • can this be used to renew an existing prepaid sim?

    • This is a 'Starter Pack', so normally you will have to port out to another network and then port back to Boost.

    • +1

I've read in previous posts that you can call their customer support and ask them to transfer your existing Boost number to the new Boost SIM. They will do it as a one-off only. I will try this before going through the whole port-out port-in shenanigans.

      • +3

Good luck, they flat out refused on chat and after calling them last week.

      • They say, one off only but have been doing for years now. Was available over the chat but not any more. Waiting for boxing day deal, my plan expires on 8th Jan.

      • +1

Tried this today - they no longer transfer you to a new boost Sim from an existing one because of the amount of fraud/scams happening.

What they ended up doing was activating the new SIM, deactivating the new SIM, and then applying a $230 recharge to my existing SIM.

    • According to this govt page, besides porting to a different telco, you can 'move' the number to a different family member's name on the same telco. I wonder if that would work? https://www.acma.gov.au/keep-or-port-your-phone-number

Price matched one of these back around Black Friday at OW no problems, though apparently some others had difficulties with particular officeworks staff refusing to price match. YMMV

        • Wow not for me :(

What was the reason for OW not to price match?

Manager says no, shop seems dodgy, it’s not the same thing, price is too low and whatnot

      • Does boost offer any deals during Boxing Day? But then I’m not a new customer so will be excluded.
The weird thing is wife had an offer on her account for $230 sim for $200 but not me and I been with boost a few years longer

Woolies have Lebara $26 SIMs for $6. They also incl Int'l if needed. Port to it and then back after a month. Nice and cheap.

          • +1

@Borg: Fountain gate in vic has $10 amaysim starters for $5.00. Got 2 for myself last week. Still plenty left. It’s on the bottom shelf with no price and collecting dust.

          • @Borg: Thanks. Just did that..simcard pack said it expired in November 2023 but still worked fine. Now to hope for a Boost 1 year deal in the next few days.

          • +1

@Borg: Warning - I went down this lebara port route and it has been a disaster. 5 days and counting and no working phone. Excuse after excuse around technical issues. I have lost count of calls and live chats trying to get this port to lebara working. If you are going to port to someone for a month, don’t do lebara if you value your sanity!

    • +10

My experience with Officeworks is that they would say anything to not price match.

    • +1

      Load of BS

    • +1

My Officeworks (which I won't identify) was like "Oh, Lucky Mobile, sure!" and I even bought two SIMS (one for me, one for my partner). My guess is some Managers/staff are more c***y than others.

Anyone got any insider info why and how they can do this without making a loss??

    • +1

I'm also interested in how they can razor the margins, must be some sort of wholesale deal.

    • the sims fell off the back of a truck

  • I cant find it in the critical information summary but does the unlimited calls include 13 and 1800 numbers? Just want to be 100% sure. It just says "national standard numbers"

    • +2

      Yes it includes them.

    • -2

you cant call 13 numbers on Boost

  • +1

Are Lucky Mobile legit? Has a mobile number, a gmail address, and google maps has little more than a sign for LM and not much else. Screams scam to me, but could be wrong.

    • -2

I work at Officeworks and yes, it’s not a legit business.

We have been told not to price match Lucky Mobile and that they are a blacklisted website and are a fraudulent company.

They don’t even exist in Adelaide if you search the address on Google.

PS - Lucky mobile are not affiliated with Telechoice. They promote it that way to look legit.

      • +3

Just out of interest, what makes it fraudulent and not legit?

He seems to have an ABN and is registered for GST:
        https://abr.business.gov.au/ABN/View?id=65361703252

Their address, Shop 3/85 Grote St Adelaide SA 5000
        https://maps.app.goo.gl/hwyeUTXxahZ5Eyds9

To add… I notice Boost stickers on their business door, no Lucky Mobile sign that I can see, but they do sell Joyoung appliances on their site and that business address does also… I assume it's a sole trader with his fingers in a few pies…

Edit: this angle of their shop shows the Lucky Mobile sign:
        https://maps.app.goo.gl/mozmcaU654PXDyvf9

        • -2

To add to my suspicions, if you go to the order page and click on the Privacy Policy page, the href is blank. If they are legit, they are dodgy at best, scam at worst.

          • +5

@st1ng: Dodgy?, or a sole trader that's not too tech savy? …

People seem to be getting what they order so he cant be too dodgy…

      • +2

@azzaisawesome, best go back to managers and let them know that they are talking rubbish. Lucky Mobiles has existed for several years and is also a Storefront as per links shown above. I have ordered from them in the past without issues and that was over two years ago and they still exist.

I'm more interested to know why they say it is a fraudulent business?

  • +2

Genuine question - why stay with boost now that they aren't as competitive as before? Two years ago I paid $125 for the year.

Woolies mobile are $170 + 10% off one shop a month so effectively free if you spend $140+ on a single shop and is Telstra - anyone here use that service and can comment it's comparison to Boost?

    • +2

boost uses telstra network but definitely telstra is way more stable and faster internet provided

      • +1

WW is not 5g I think?

      • Yup and international roaming. Boost has 5G and the best Mnvo provider on Telstra network backed by them.

        • So if you don't use internet roaming (or have a need for 5G) and shop at woolies, it's a no brainier to use them over Boost (from what I can tell).

I shop at Woolies/Aldi but will happily put together a big shop at woolies once a month for free mobile.

    • Good question. I ported to Woolies from Boost last year only to discover after 5 months that Woolies did not have international roaming coverage in the country/city I was in. And the reason for my porting at the outset was that Boost had stopped international roaming in 21-22! ( Now it's available).
IR may not matter to everyone.

    • Agree with the value being eroded on boost.
IIRC I paid 140 for my recharge last year which was a $20ish premium over other yearly plans. Happy to pay it for the full telstra network but a 50+ premium is harder to stomach.

  • What's the minimum time to port out before jumping on this starter kit?

    10mims?

  • I'm correctly with boost but my sim expires soon, I bought a $2 Telstra sim to port out to. Would that work or will it still be considered the same network?

    • +1

The $2 SIM has no credit so you will have to select/pay for a Telstra plan upon activation so will cost mode than $2 if I am not mistaken.
Added to this and as Boost are Telstra, it is best to select a non Telstra SIM to port over to. Saves any potential hassle or having to call Boost to switch back.

      • I wasn't actually going to use the telstra sim though, just port to it for a day and then go back to boost.

  • +1

Manage to price match 2 at OW. You could see their reluctance but they put it through. They didn't add shipping so that was a bonus.

Can someone who works at OW please explain the work culture there? Why are so many staff reluctant to implement this policy? It's rarely done with any enthusiasm or a smile.

    • I want to know how you got that price matched with eBay store or online retailer with no brick and mortar presence, when most do not even bother to price match online sellers to begin with.

Of course they won't smile they making a loss. Hence my question how the seller able to sell genuine items for less and not making a loss.

Staff who price matched probably get hammered by store manager and might get special mention and disciplinary actions for doing so. The price match policy is only on the surface. Deep inside Officeworks do not want to do it unless necessary. All corporates are the same

      • They do have a store. TeleChoice Lucky Mobile | Shop 3/85 Grote St Adelaide SA 5000. Officeworks do price beat online items providing they are identical and in stock.

      • they dont lose money just making less profit.

do you think OW pay more than this small company? so they can make money while OW loses money? when OW price match?

  • +1

Would be good if Boost has a small 365 plan like 120GB for $120 or something.

    • or even 40GB. I only use around 8GB over 365 days on avg. Similar for many people I know (having checked) as we don't use data for streaming for the most part.
Telco's know this but up their prices and offer more Data most of which is never used by many.

  • Anyone had luck price matching this with OW over the phone?

  • +1

Boost may not be really capped. Once I got 650M/s

  • Do you think its possible to return a sim i bought but had not opened and activated (belong) from OW?

    • I doubt it. When OW did the price beat for me they told me the sims could not be returned.

      • I just had the south melbourne OW said they could aslong as its unopened and within 30d

        • That's good. These people are so inconsistent. I hope they do the price beat for you.

          • @unity1: Thanks, not holding my breath on the price beat. Guy over the phone really emphasised "part number".

  • +1

I called OW. They said they only price match if the following is known:
    1. Part Number
    2. Shipping aus wide
    3. Not a sign on bonus

Does anyone know how we can see lucky mobiles Boost sim card part number?

Also, anyone with an invoice from OW or lucky they could share please?

    • I was also asked for a part number by a stuff from an OW, but even the official website did not provide the part number.

  • How did the price just jump to 190…
