  • Half tempted to upgrade from a 4G modem router to this, but I think this would only result in running out of data sooner in the month.

Running out of data, is no way to be living your life in 2023.

  • no mmWave

  • is Inseego chinese?

    • No, its an American company that moved its manufacturing out of China into the other China, Taiwan. Probably to make sure its 5G products didn't get caught up in US sanctions.

    Abandoned technology

    • What do you mean?

Had a quick google. It’s only a Cat 20 module.
Grab a used B818-263 off marketplace for $80 which is cat 19.

Unless you need remoteness of this device.

    • and 5g?

      • +1

Not 5G. But the speed difference is minimal.

        • did a little googling. look like all are cat 20. my nokia fastmile is, even netgear nighthawk m6 pro

    • The specs section of Telstra's site seems to show cat 19 and 20 as supported through? Where did you see that 19 is not supported?

I never said it wasn’t supported. The device is Cat 20

Cat determines the speed of the device. Higher the Cat the faster the speeds (in theory) you can get.
For example USB dongles are Cat 4 and at best the speed you can get is 150mb.

Some 5G modems are Cat 19-22. All I’m getting at is between cat 19-20, the difference is really negligible. The B818 is only 4G but I’ve gotten high 500-600mb downloads when I lived near a tower.

I’ve also got the Glinet 5G modem router and that’s Cat 19 and got roughly the same speeds.

Something else to be mindful with 4G/5G is to check what bands are covered. 3,7,28 are common is the big three use at least one of them and most devices cover them. But check the bands the device uses and your tower near you.

My last comment is how annoying it is that telcos are putting a speed lock on what speeds you can get. I use boost and it’s locked on 4G which is annoying.

        • How much better would this be (or the B818) then the speeds i get with a hotspot phone? i am on FTTN NBN and can only get 47mb down and 13mb up. When i try my phone that seems to only get 4g in the house, even though there is a 5g tower maybe 400m away, I only get 20mb down and 8mb up.

Can i expect better speeds with a dedicated 4g or 5g modem?

          • @worthy1: I can't honestly answer that.

Depends on what phone you have… but also which telco you are using.

            So many variables.

Could have a tower but it might be Telstra… and you are Vodafone and that might be located elsewhere.

With B818 you can add an antenna if you find reception is poor

            • @kfp187: Hmm i might give the B818 a go. The tower is a Optus one and im on Telstra. Although i have an unused Optus sim which would be what i use for a 4g or 5g router so it might be a good combo.

              • @worthy1: They are unlocked. They make great modems but plug it into a router because it’s limited to 32 or 64 devices.

          • @worthy1: hotspot phones generally suck ass. especially iphones. the speed is much inferior to from a 5g router. also iphones keep disconnecting. not sure about android.

        • Just curious kfp187, I use Boost on an annual plan bought cheaply on Ozbargain and get 5G no problems on my Pixel 6a when in the right locations. It's been pretty fast too in the right areas. I also often get far higher speeds than they told me I was limited to? (Edited - Google Pixel 6a).

  • Locked to Telstra?

    • Not locked. I am using a Singtel sim in it now. I'd highly recommend it especially at this price.

Warning!! This thing activated the chip in my covid vaccine and now the lizard people know what i'm thinking. And i used to walk across crossings without waiting for the man to turn green, and now I physically can't until its green.

    • What was going on in your mind when you typed all that up?

    • Do you know that any kind of humour, jokes, sarcasm, etc regarding vaccination is prohibited on OZ?

  • How can I purchase it without adding a mobile data plan? Thanks

    • I just went to a Telstra store and they asked me cash or card. You can also buy it outright online, just make sure you've selected the outright option.
