    2023 Xmas Charity Donations

We'll be making donations to these charities ($6667 each) later today.

Original post

It's almost Christmas, the time where many of us will travel, feast, spend time with family and spend money on shopping. However it's also the time of the year to remember and think about many around us that aren't as privileged, and how we can be generous towards them. OzBargain will be donating at least $30,000 to charity organisations this year! We have been donating to selected charities biannually since 2012, and whom we donate to depending on your suggestions and votes!

I have pre-selected 20 charities from last year's Xmas donation poll. However, community can use the "Suggestion" box in the top-level comment to suggest more charities to the poll.

Add your poll suggestion here

If you are suggesting a charity, please also

  • Check the current poll to make sure your suggestion is not already in the list.
  • Provide a link in the comment.
  • Add one or two sentences on what this charity is about, to help the community to decide.

The poll will run until Friday 22 Dec @ 12AM. After poll expires, votes will be revealed and we will divide up the final donation amount to give to the top 6 charities. Donations will then be made over the weekend before Christmas.

Moreover, for each unique commenter in this forum post, we will be donating an extra $10 (capped at $10,000 extra) to the total sum of donations. For example, if there are 500 OzBargain users commented in this post, we'll be donating $35,000 to 6 different charities ($5,834 each). If 1000 OzBargainers commented, $40,000 will be donated ($6,667 each).

Note to the Charities

This is a poll for the OzBargain users. This is not a contest between charities, and please do not ask your staff or followers on your social media to vote for you here. We had similar incidents happen in the past and those charities got disqualified from receiving donations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which charity should I suggest?

There are some limitations on the charity that a user may suggest:

  • It must be a registered charity eligible for DGR (deductible gift recipient). That would make NPOs like Wikipedia & some international charities ineligible.
  • As we are OzBargain, it would be great if the charity is Australia based or benefits Australians.
  • The suggestion feature will also be closed after having 50 charities on poll.

Please note that all the suggestions will have to be manually approved by the moderators, so they might not show up straight away.

Q: Why is foo charity on the list? Why is bar charity NOT on the list?

All the charity organisations are suggested by the community (either this year, or from previous years). If you think certain charity organisation ought to be on the list, please suggest it (provided that we haven't reached the 50 options limit). If you do not think a certain charity should be there, please leave a comment in the post, and use "Report" to notify a moderator. We will assess your claim and decide whether to remove that charity from the list.

Q: Any bargain?

Kudos to kindness, but no nature, = no future for the generations to follow.
Nature needs all the help 'it' can get.

    How we work
We push for bold solutions, because the problems we face are big and urgent. We use evidence-based advocacy, courage, creativity and common sense to make this country a better place. Powered by people, we influence governments and businesses to protect and regenerate nature and hold them to account without fear or favour.

      • I don't mind you projecting the bile that you consistently do, but can you please not do so under the Gervais name? He actually seems like a good bloke by all accounts.

        • -2

Aww, hurt your feelings does it?

Some Gervais fan you must be, you little triggered soul.

          • -2

@Gervais fanboy: How am I triggered? I led by saying you can continue to spew your nonsense, I just don’t think Gervais need be involved.

Not sure how your reply relates to my comments but you do seem demented so it’s likely my error for engaging to begin with.

You think a lot of yourself if you think your idiot comments would trigger anyone.

            • -2

@kiriakoz: Imagine how much it bothers you to read my comments and seeing Gervais’s name to it. Wow.
This kind of snowflakery is exactly what he hates btw.. since you care so much about him and his opinions.

Also, I am bit of a fan too but he’s no God. Relax boy.
Btw my name’s not a tribute to him or anything, I called myself a Fanboy, it was meant to be self-deprecating, a joke.

You think a lot of yourself if you think your idiot comments would trigger anyone.

              Well it definitely triggered you
You have already resorted to name calling lol.
              You little child,

Excellent Foundation. Trigger warning for cry-baby naysaying Fanboys: I am a long-time donor of the ACF.

        And benefits everyone, inter-generationally.
        ( even the sooks)

    • Nature needs all the help 'it' can get.

      that is a contradiction.

      • Not as contradictory as 'human intelligence'.

Thank you. So many charities for people and animals, and not one for the environment that keeps both alive.

        What about these two?

        Trillion Trees Australia :
Since 1979 we have been bringing people together to plant trees, reconnect with nature and foster a long-term appreciation of the value of trees for a healthy planet. Each year thousands of volunteers help us to plant trees to regenerate the landscape to create a vibrant environment for future generations. Our Australian planting projects combat salinity and soil erosion, improve biodiversity, and provide habitat for thousands of native species. Using only Australian native species, most of which are propagated and grown in our own nursery, we have planted over 15.5 million native trees and understory. With your help, we can do more.

Australian Conservation Foundation, Australia's national environment organisation:
Our big goals: Right now, a pollution and extinction crisis threatens our natural world. Climate pollution and habitat destruction are our biggest challenges. To solve this we need big, systemic change. Together we're working to solve the climate crisis and stand up for nature.
Before 2025: National nature laws that protect nature; Investors and food companies commit to end land-clearing; Investors don’t fund new coal and gas projects; End fossil fuel subsidies; End political donations from fossil fuel companies
Before 2030: End land-clearing; Native habitat is net positive; Australia is powered by renewables; 80% of coal, gas and uranium exports are replaced by renewables; Investors and food companies are coal, gas and deforestation free

Great group with a long history of legal activism.

It's all good to protest on the streets but the real substantial wins come from the behind the scenes work like suing big corps like Woodside and lobbying politicians.

    Suggested WorthyAustralia

    WorthyAustralia
This is taken from their website.

Worthy Australia is a Perth based not-for-profit organization that provides life changing support to women & children who have experienced homelessness due to domestic violence. Through our Safe Haven program, the volunteers at Worthy Australia turn empty houses into beautiful fully furnished homes for families who without this program, are unable to leave domestic violence refuge.

Is that like Woolworths Australia ?

      • +2

jv, no, it has nothing at all to do with Woolworths! This is a bona fide charity. The link to the WorthyAustralia.org website is attached. Please have a read and you will see what a worthwhile charity this is to support, especially at Christmas.

        • -4

Perhaps Woolworths Australia could donate to them.

    • +2

Actually I just need the unique commenter, not necessarily unique comments. So every user commented on this post counts.

      • -1

That was what I initially thought but wanted to just make sure that the extra $10 got donated. It's a really great initiative!

      • +1

Top level comments only or any comment?

For those donating their own money to charity, consider reviewing the financials of the charity you're supporting. Many charities barely raise enough money to (handsomely) renumerate their CEO and other employees, with nothing leftover to allocate to their advertised cause. But some are entirely reputable, ethical & worthy.

    • I really wish there was an easier way to do this, I'm big on only donating to causes where effectively 70c in the dollar is directly used for service delivery. Obviously cuts out a lot of the charity mugger groups, but can be hard doing all the research.

      • Sadly made harder as RepTrak (formerly known as the Reputation Institute) decided to cease publication (in 2020) of the Australian Charity Reputation Index. So there's no easy path for prospective donors. GoFundMe charges enticingly low fees to beneficiaries but their reputation is pretty awful.

    Suggested Orange Sky Australia

    Orange Sky Australia
We have a simple formula; we provide a platform for every day Australians to connect through a regular laundry and shower service. The focus is on creating a safe, positive and supportive environment for people who are too often ignored or who feel disconnected from the community. Our volunteers are not social workers or experts on homelessness - they are empathetic listeners and great conversationalists.

  • Kids With Cancer Foundation Australia!

  • Cheers team!

  • Surely the true Ozbargain way is not to think about charity until 29 June to pay on 30 June - to minimise the time between the payment and the tax benefit…???
Seriously though, its a good thing you guys are doing Scotty.

    • We do donate every EOFY and Xmas.

Donations are not done for tax benefit reasons, we would actually have more profit if we chose not to donate.

      • That is this site's position (presumably the pty ltd company that controls it).
The position for each individual user is not necessarily the same.
Of course you'd have more money if you didn't donate. The deduction is only worth whatever you marginal rate is - and that will never be more than just under half. No-one ever suggested otherwise. But if you were going to donate, doing it at the EOFY makes most sense.

    Suggested Transcend Australia

A cause a little close to my home, I understand this may not be as popular as other options suggested, but they provide great peer lead support and advocacy for a very marginalized community in Australia. I can personally credit the fact I'm still living to Transcend and their support, and thus I feel I owe them a shoutout here. I feel that all the proposed charities are amazing and I'd be happy seeing money donated to any and all of them.
